Doctor Ryder Wallace is on a mission to plant trees and slow climate change. All he needs is more money to keep his initiatives going. Fortunately, Ryder has a meeting with a philanthropist to plead for funding. What he doesn't have is a significant other. According to an article he's read about this investor, he's going to need one in order to convince the man to fork over the dollars. Problem is, Ryder can't talk to women like his charming brother can. How is he supposed to build a relationship in time for the meeting that could save his life's work? After tragedy strikes on his way to Vermont, Ryder finds exactly what he needs. Her name is Brooke Rayhill. Compassionate, generous, and able to turn him on even when his heart is broken, Brooke is a ray of sunshine in a stormy time. When she agrees to be his fake fiancée, Ryder's mission is back on track. But not everyone is thrilled with Ryder's plans to save the planet. A random accident doesn't seem so random anymore, and being with Ryder puts Brooke in danger. As the younger sister of a famous actor, she never wants for anything. The glitz of New York’s club scene, however, is starting to lose its luster. She needs a purpose that doesn’t depend on her brother’s money. The trouble is she doesn’t have any of the right talents for a real job. She knows how to party, but that isn’t going to pay the bills. Not that she even enjoys partying anymore. Ever since Morgan took a trip to Vermont and had one steamy night with sexy hockey player, Sawyer Lundin, nothing feels right. Not as right as being in his arms had. It was just one night, so why can’t she stop thinking about him? Sawyer can’t stop thinking about that one night either. Normally, all his effort is aimed at helping the Rhode Island Anchors set records on the ice. He never lets anyone pull his focus from the game. But the memory of being with Morgan is hard to shake. She made him feel like more than everyone’s favorite hockey player. When Sawyer runs into Morgan again, he’s more than willing to head back to Vermont with her and pick up where they left off. The heat between them is enough to melt an entire ice rink, but Sawyer brings a guest that could change everything for all of them. They’ll need to work as a team to turn this fling into forever. All her siblings have found true love in Maplehaven. Clearly, she’s next. She’s been on a ton of dates since moving to small-town Vermont, but those guys haven’t given her that forever vibe. None of them have made her feel like she did six years ago on her one and only night with Dolan Fairmont. Her brother’s sexy bodyguard shifted her world right off its axis. Then he left. Claire has been spinning ever since, but she’s determined to find a nice guy who wants to make a home with her. Until Dolan returns with the brick walls around his heart higher than ever. The mere sight of him has insults flying out of Claire’s mouth every time they are in each other’s company. Which is far too often. His singular focus on his job pisses her off, but the way he tracks her with those serious gray-blue eyes does something else entirely. Dolan isn’t sure his brick walls will hold now that he’s back in Claire’s orbit. The sass that comes out of her mouth doesn’t affect him half as much as what that same mouth did to him six years ago. He’s never forgotten the power of her kiss or the fire of her touch, but his line of work is risky. He knows all too well that putting people he loves in danger is always a mistake. Better to not have Claire at all than to lose her. When Dolan gets hurt, however, Claire surprises them both by volunteering to help. Will she regret that good deed? Will he? Is one kind home enough to tear down all the walls around their fragile hearts? One Kind Home is a second-chance, forced-proximity, small-town, contemporary romance with a bodyguard hero and a boudoir photography stylist who might just be picture perfect together. Teaching fourth grade at Maplehaven Elementary School deep in the woods of Vermont is Leah Greenstead’s chance to hide and heal. It hurt too much to stay in New York City where every corner café, every friend, every sunrise reminded her of all she’d lost. Some people get to have everything they’ve ever wanted. Some don’t. Leah will stick to her rules about not getting close to anyone—about not falling in love again—and preserve what little is left of her heart. Except Dakota Brenton sets his sights on Leah. Maplehaven’s most beloved adventure guide isn’t easy to resist either. And he knows it. He uses his sense of humor, his charming family, and mathematical dirty talk to make it difficult for Leah to ignore him. Letting him in, however, is a big risk. If she dates him, she might like him. If she likes him, she might love him. If she loves him… she might lose him. Is one kind heart enough to change Leah’s mind about love? Then the Sun Goddess kicked me out of paradise for something I didn’t do. My wings were burned right off my back. I’ve returned to Earth now, but not as a soul in a brand new human body. Instead, I’m in the adult one I had during my last time here in Moon Valley, Vermont. Now have to figure out what comes next. A help wanted sign draws me to a familiar diner in the small town. I secure a job and a place to stay because that’s what humans who want to survive do. When I step into the diner’s kitchen and meet the chef, however, the ovens aren’t the only thing heating up. Mason Harrister looks even better than I remembered, and the love we shared before I died instantly flares to life again. How do I tell him the truth about where I’ve been? Claiming to have been an angel? He’ll think I’m insane. But Mason has some secrets of his own. Secrets that show me there’s more than just humans rattling about on this planet. I’m not going to let that stop me from diving back into a relationship with Mason though. We have a second chance and we’re going for it. Until the Sun Goddess pays us a visit and threatens the future we’ve planned. Only she doesn’t expect what Mason and I are willing to do to keep our deep love alive. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I’d only just rejected my former mate mere hours ago, and now a bond was forming with a new one? Being an Omega werewolf bites, and not in the good way. It means I’m smaller, weaker, and submissive to other wolves. It means I need protection. I’ve had that protection from my mate, Vince, the Alpha of the Morelli pack, for five years now, and I’ve been happy with him. In fact, we’ve been trying to make pups of our own to continue the Morelli bloodline. One night when I come home from work, however, I discover Vince isn’t the wolf I thought he was. With the sting of betrayal hot in my veins, I break our mating bond and leave Vince. Now I’m an Omega on her own in the world, which is a dangerous thing to be. Lunai, the Moon Goddess, decides I deserve another shot at a fated mate though. All I have to do is rescue this new mate who has been abducted then I’ll have his protection. This plan has several problems. One: see that bit about me being an Omega werewolf. I can barely keep myself safe. How am I supposed to save another wolf? Two: Alpha wolves don’t take kindly to their mates breaking the bond. If I think Vince is going to just let me leave him and the Morelli pack, I seriously need my head examined. And three: this new mate Lunai wants to give me? Yeah, he’s Archer Sinclaire, also known as the Morelli pack’s biggest rival. Is a second chance at a forever love worth all this, or should I just accept my fate as a lone wolf? "Once there was a tree...and she loved a little boy." So begins a story of unforgettable perception, beautifully written and illustrated by the gifted and versatile Shel Silverstein. This moving parable for all ages offers a touching interpretation of the gift of giving and a serene acceptance of another's capacity to love in return. Every day the boy would come to the tree to eat her apples, swing from her branches, or slide down her trunk...and the tree was happy. But as the boy grew older he began to want more from the tree, and the tree gave and gave and gave. This is a tender story, touched with sadness, aglow with consolation. Shel Silverstein's incomparable career as a bestselling children's book author and illustrator began with Lafcadio, the Lion Who Shot Back. He is also the creator of picture books including A Giraffe and a Half, Who Wants a Cheap Rhinoceros?, The Missing Piece, The Missing Piece Meets the Big O, and the perennial favorite The Giving Tree, and of classic poetry collections such as Where the Sidewalk Ends, A Light in the Attic, Falling Up, Every Thing On It, Don't Bump the Glump!, and Runny Babbit. Book Consciousness and Meaning

Download or read book Consciousness and Meaning written by Brian Loar and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-01-16 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most important problems of modern philosophy concerns the place of the mind -- and, in particular, of consciousness, meaning, and intentionality -- in a physical universe. Brian Loar was a major contributor to the discussion of this problem for over four decades. This volume has two parts: one a selection of Loar's essays on the philosophy of language, the other on the philosophy of mind. A common thread in Loar's essays on language is his engagement with the Gricean program of analyzing linguistic representation in terms of mental representation, thus reducing the semantic to the psychological. In the philosophy of mind he was concerned with understanding consciousness and intentionality (mental representation) from the subjective perspective. The concern that unifies Loar's work in mind and language is how to understand subjectivity in a physical universe. He was committed to the reality of phenomenology, qualia, and the subjective perspective; and he found that phenomena like intentionality and consciousness are, in a certain sense, ineliminable and irreducible to objective ones. At the same time he believed that intentionality and consciousness are grounded in the physical. One of his great contributions was to reconcile these two positions by being a conceptual and explanatory anti-reductionist about both consciousness and intentionality but a metaphysical reductionist nonetheless. He had a deep commitment both to physicalism and to the reality and significance of the subjective point of view.
