Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One Hundred Years of Social Work is the first comprehensive history of social work as a profession in English Canada. Organized chronologically, it provides a critical and compelling look at the internal struggles and debates in the social work profession over the course of a century and investigates the responses of social workers to several important events. A central theme in the book is the long-standing struggle of the professional association (the Canadian Association of Social Workers) and individual social workers to reconcile advancement of professional status with the promotion social action. The book chronicles the early history of the secularization and professionalization of social work and examines social workers roles during both world wars, the Depression, and in the era of postwar reconstruction. It includes sections on civil defence, the Cold War, unionization, social work education, regulation of the profession, and other key developments up to the end of the twentieth century. Drawing on extensive archival research as well as personal interviews and secondary literature, the authors provide strong academic evidence of a profession that has endured many important changes and continues to advocate for a just society and a responsive social welfare state. One Hundred Years of Social Work will be of interest to social workers, social work students and educators, social historians, professional associations and anyone interested in understanding the complex nature of people and institutions.

Download or read book Mommy s Hometown written by Hope Lim and published by Candlewick Press. This book was released on 2022-04-12 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When a young boy and his mother travel overseas to her childhood home in Korea, the town is not as he imagined. Will he be able to see it the way Mommy does? This gentle, contemplative picture book about family origins invites us to ponder the meaning of home. A young boy loves listening to his mother describe the place where she grew up, a world of tall mountains and friends splashing together in the river. Mommy’s stories have let the boy visit her homeland in his thoughts and dreams, and now he’s old enough to travel with her to see it for himself. But when mother and son arrive, the town is not as he imagined. Skyscrapers block the mountains, and crowds hurry past. The boy feels like an outsider—until they visit the river where his mother used to play, and he sees that the spirit and happiness of those days remain. Sensitively pitched to a child’s-eye view, this vivid story honors the immigrant experience and the timeless bond between parent and child, past and present.
Download or read book Nineteen for Lincoln written by Daniel Plaster and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2020-06-08 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is 1862 when Union army officer John Kelso halts his small command on a bluff. Moments later, they spy a ghostly shadow in the valley below. After they follow the shadow into a deep cavern, the men see a woman, clad in a white nightgown, kneeling at a bedside. As the frightened form slowly turns to face the squad, the seventeen cavalrymen have no idea they have been inadvertently thrust back in time to the reign of King Henry VIII in Tudor England. This is the day that the former queen, Anne Boleyn, is scheduled to die. After the Yankee soldiers realize they have been somehow transported to a castle in ancient England, they help Anne, accompanied by her almoner, Reverend John Skip, escape her dark destiny. Guided by Anne and Skip, the brigade treks across northeastern England toward a city with a familiar name—Lincoln. While the men wonder if they will ever reach Lincoln alive and find their way home and Anne worries whether she will eventually be executed as planned, the course of history patiently awaits their next move. Nineteen for Lincoln is the tale of a brigade of Union soldiers as they unwittingly embark on a trip through time back to 1500s England where they must rescue a former queen from a dark fate.

Download or read book Onondaga Iroquois Prehistory written by James A. Tuck and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 1990-09-01 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book opens with a brief historical outline of Onondaga culture and a sketch of the major developments in Iroquois prehistory. Each site is described, with a short account of its discovery, location in relation to other sites and natural features, testing and excavations, and artifacts. The site descriptions are arranged in chronological “phases”— Castle Creek, Oak Hill, Chance, and Garoga—based upon William A. Ritchie’s classification. In the last chapter, Professor Tuck summaries his wealth of data and interprets the origin and development of Onondaga culture in view of his archaeological findings, which also make us of radiocarbon dating techniques. The illustrations are an essential part of the book. Forty-four plates show arrowpoints, ceramic sherds, post molds revealing outlines of longhouses, cooking pits, occasional human burials, smoking pipes, and much more. Eight figures provide maps of sites, specific details of excavations, and a chronological sequence of Onondaga villages. Twenty-one tales give the frequencies and percentages of smoking pipe varieties, faunal remains, ceramic types, and other items discovered in the field work. An appendix includes techniques of ceramic analysis and many line drawings of ceramic varieties.
