Book Moonshiners and Prohibitionists

Download or read book Moonshiners and Prohibitionists written by Bruce E. Stewart and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2011-04-22 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Homemade liquor has played a prominent role in the Appalachian economy for nearly two centuries. The region endured profound transformations during the extreme prohibition movements of the nineteenth century, when the manufacturing and sale of alcohol—an integral part of daily life for many Appalachians—was banned. In Moonshiners and Prohibitionists: The Battle over Alcohol in Southern Appalachia, Bruce E. Stewart chronicles the social tensions that accompanied the region's early transition from a rural to an urban-industrial economy. Stewart analyzes the dynamic relationship of the bootleggers and opponents of liquor sales in western North Carolina, as well as conflict driven by social and economic development that manifested in political discord. Stewart also explores the life of the moonshiner and the many myths that developed around hillbilly stereotypes. A welcome addition to the New Directions in Southern History series, Moonshiners and Prohibitionists addresses major economic, social, and cultural questions that are essential to the understanding of Appalachian history.

Book Soldiers in Petticoats

Download or read book Soldiers in Petticoats written by Betty Jamerson Reed and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2019-11-04 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sophia Sawyer, Emily Prudden, and Martha Berry encountered sexism, prejudice, financial hardship, discrimination, challenging travel conditions, exclusion from the right to vote, and social complacency. On one occasion two militiamen showed up at the school door and threatened to arrest the teacher if she continued teaching black children to read. Another instructor dealt with murder and mayhem, violence, loss of life, and racial hostility. And a third was shunned by her neighbors because she associated with poor mountaineers and “begged” to keep her school open. Their victories against overwhelming obstacles on behalf of struggling youth in the Southern Appalachian region, as well as in Oklahoma and Arkansas, led each into a deeper Christian life. With vision, audacity, and resolution these teachers enabled students to succeed. Their accomplishments as educators and as Christians provide inspiration for today’s readers. Sawyer, Prudden, and Berry were viewed in their culture as weak. However, they battled ignorance, bias, superstition, and even dirt, as they effectively changed the lives of thousands of children and adults.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Clarke offers an important study of the standard text of the New Testament that is in the hands of every new Testament scholar. He compares the five editions to appear since 1966, focusing upon the textual apparatus and the A, B, C and D evaluation of evidence letter-ratings. Clarke presents the evidence of extensive 'grade inflation' in the fourth edition, implying a much higher degree of certainty than previous editions had accepted. He claims that the editors have not only been inconsistent and overly optimistic in their modifications, but have also failed to provide readers with an adequate explanation and methodological basis for these unprecedented changes.
