Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relationship between early Mormons and the United States was marked by anxiety and hostility, heightened over the course of the nineteenth century by the assassination of Mormon leaders, the Saints' exile from Missouri and Illinois, the military occupation of the Utah territory, and the national crusade against those who practiced plural marriage. Nineteenth-century Latter-day Saints looked forward to apocalyptic events that would unseat corrupt governments across the globe, particularly the tyrannical government of the United States. The infamous "White Horse Prophecy" referred to this coming American apocalypse as "a terrible revolutionEL in the land of America, such as has never been seen before; for the land will be literally left without a supreme government." Mormons envisioned divine deliverance by way of plagues, natural disasters, foreign invasions, American Indian raids, slave uprisings, or civil war unleashed on American cities and American people. For the Saints, these violent images promised a national rebirth that would vouchsafe the protections of the United States Constitution and end their oppression. In Terrible Revolution, Christopher James Blythe examines apocalypticism across the history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, particularly as it took shape in the writings and visions of the laity. The responses of the church hierarchy to apocalyptic lay prophecies promoted their own form of separatist nationalism during the nineteenth century. Yet, after Utah obtained statehood, as the church sought to assimilate to national religious norms, these same leaders sought to lessen the tensions between themselves and American political and cultural powers. As a result, visions of a violent end to the nation became a liability to disavow and regulate. Ultimately, Blythe argues that the visionary world of early Mormonism, with its apocalyptic emphases, continued in the church's mainstream culture in modified forms but continued to maintain separatist radical forms at the level of folk-belief.

Book Saints The Story of the Church of Jesus Christ in the Latter Days Volume 3

Download or read book Saints The Story of the Church of Jesus Christ in the Latter Days Volume 3 written by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and published by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This book was released on 2022-04-22 with total page 868 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After decades of opposition, the Latter-day Saints have dedicated the Salt Lake Temple, a mighty symbol of their industry and faith. Now, with a new century on the horizon, the Saints are optimistic about the future and ready to spread the Savior’s message of peace across the globe. But the world is rapidly changing. Advances in transportation and communication allow people and information to cross vast distances in record time. And young people are venturing far from home as never before, seeking educational and professional opportunities their parents and grandparents could hardly imagine. As the Church begins to take root in Europe, South America, and Asia, the Saints rejoice in the rise of the global Church. Yet many are wary of the challenges the changing world poses to the cause of Zion. While the promise of the new century is bright, it comes with dire economic hardships, brutal global wars, and other unprecedented trials. Boldly, Nobly, and Independent is the third book in Saints, a new, four-volume narrative history of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Fast-paced, meticulously researched, and written under the direction of the First Presidency, Saints recounts true stories of Latter-day Saints across the globe and answers the Lord’s call to write a history “for the good of the Church, and for the rising generations” (Doctrine and Covenants 69:8).

Book Silencing Gender Age Ethnicity and Cultural Biases in Leadership

Download or read book Silencing Gender Age Ethnicity and Cultural Biases in Leadership written by Camilla A. Montoya and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2018-09-15 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Silencing Gender, Age, Ethnicity and Cultural Biases in Leadership is an edited volume containing eight chapters, each a real-life account from a Latina in a leadership position in the United States. These women discuss how their professional goals may conflict with their culture’s expectations for them, and they describe the complexity of life choices for Latinas in the workplace, including their struggles in challenging such social assumptions. Although some of the contributors come from Latin American countries and others were born in the United States, all eight women share similar backgrounds in regards to gender, age, ethnicity, or other forms of cultural biases they have encountered in both their professional and social experiences. The theme presented in this book is extremely relevant to the modern workplace—not only where men and women of different ages, ethnic, and religious backgrounds come together, attempting to be effective in their professional setting, but also where biases that try to silence minorities still prevail. This book is not a compilation of victimizing stories; on the contrary, it serves as a statement of success despite adversities.

Book Mormon Identities in Transition

Download or read book Mormon Identities in Transition written by Douglas Davies and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-10-06 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of interdisciplinary essays explores the prime concern of Mormon Studies – the relationship between knowledge and spirituality – and how that relationship has been defined and reinterpreted over time. Beginning with an examination of the international prospects for Mormonism at the turn of the century, the volume's overarching theme, from sociological, anthropological and theological approaches, is the examination of changing Mormon identities. The contributors review the expansion of Mormonism, the emotional and social contexts of its historic and contemporary manifestations, the distinction between 'Utah' Mormons and the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and issues in Mormon feminism, concluding with a valuable review of the sources and documents available for studying Mormonism.
