He was one of the first settlers of Plymouth, Mass. There he married in 1655 Elizabeth Lettice (b. 1636) born in England, a daughter of Thomas and Ann Lettice. William and Elizabeth had three sons, all born in Massachusetts. The Lawton immigrant ancestor of this family was, Thomas Lawton (1614-ca. 1681) of Cranfield, Bedfordshire, England. He was the son of George Lawton and Isabell Smith [Elva Lawton]. He came to America with his brother, George, ca. 1637. He married (1) 1635 at Cranfield Elizabeth Salsburie; (2) Mrs. Grace (Parsons) Bailey. He died at Portsmouth, R.I.
