Download or read book On Wenlock Edge 100 Years On written by Lisa Marie Gabriel and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2009-05-30 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vaughan Williams is a favourite composer of mine. My introduction to his music came at the age of eight when I sat at my father's feet spellbound by the shivery sounds of the Tallis Fantasia. This book is my own study of the songs of Ralph Vaughan Williams. It was first written in 1979 and I am publishing it celebrate the centennial of the first performance of Vaughan Williams' masterpiece, On Wenlock Edge, in the Aeolian Hall, London, by tenor Gervase Elwes and the Schwiller Quartet with Frederick Kiddle (piano) 0n 15th November 1909. lts reception was mixed at the time as it was so new and impressionistic for a world used to Stanford, Parry and the great German tradition. I hope music lovers will be with me in spirit in my celebration of a truly wonderful piece of music and if you have not yet made its acquaintance that this book might stir your interest in listening to or performing it.
Download or read book The Routledge Companion to Literary Media written by Astrid Ensslin and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-08-30 with total page 817 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Routledge Companion to Literary Media examines the fast-moving present and future of a media ecosystem in which the literary continues to play a vital role. The term ‘literary media’ challenges the tendency to hold the two terms distinct and broadens accepted usage of the literary to include popular cultural forms, emerging technologies and taste cultures, genres, and platforms, as well as traditions and audiences all too often excluded from literary histories and canons. Featuring contributions from leading international scholars and practitioners, the Companion provides a comprehensive guide to existing terms and theories that address the alignment of literature and a variety of media forms. It situates the concept in relation to existing theories and histographies; considers emerging genres and forms such as locative narratives and autofiction; and expands discussion beyond the boundaries by which literary authorship is conventionally defined. Contributors also examine specific production and publishing contexts to provide in-depth analysis of the promotion of literary media materials. The volume further considers reading and other aspects of situated audience engagement, such as Indigenous and oral storytelling, prize and review cultures, book clubs, children, and young adults. This authoritative collection is an invaluable resource for scholars and students working at the intersection of literary and media studies.

Celebrating 100 Years of Female Fellowship of the Geological Society Discovering Forgotten Histories
Download or read book Celebrating 100 Years of Female Fellowship of the Geological Society Discovering Forgotten Histories written by C.V. Burek and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2021-03-18 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Geological Society of London was founded in 1807. At the time, membership was restricted to men, many of whom became well-known names in the history of the geological sciences. On the 21 May 1919, the first female Fellows were elected to the Society, 112 years after its formation. This Special Publication celebrates the centenary of that important event. In doing so it presents the often untold stories of pioneering women geoscientists from across the world who navigated male-dominated academia and learned societies, experienced the harsh realities of Siberian field-exploration, or responded to the strategic necessity of the ‘petroleum girls’ in early American oil exploration and production. It uncovers important female role models in the history of science, and investigates why not all of these women received due recognition from their contemporaries and peers. The work has identified a number of common issues that sometimes led to original work and personal achievements being lost or unacknowledged, and as a consequence, to histories being unwritten.

Download or read book The University Library written by John Huston Finley and published by . This book was released on 1926 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The genesis of the University Library lies in a compilation of "Little Masterpieces," the first of which were published more than twenty-five years ago. The material included in these volumes was selected by able editors and writers whose experience was great and whose taste was excellent. Out of the "Little Masterpieces" grew a course in liberal education which was known as the Pocket University, and out of the Pocket University grew, finally, the University Library. The publishers most gratefully acknowledge their debt to the editors who compiled the original volumes: Bliss Perry, Henry van Dyke, Hardin Craig, Thomas L. Masson, Asa Don Dickinson, the late Hamilton W. Mabie, George Iles, the late Dr. Lyman Abbott, and others. Some of the most important material contained in the Pocket University is, of course, included in the University Library but the sequence has been entirely changed and the scope of the work greatly broadened. Fully two thirds of the material is new and the literature of the world has been ransacked to find appropriate text to fit the basic educational needs of the modern public. - Publisher' s note
