Book Economic Benefits Of Improved Water Quality

Download or read book Economic Benefits Of Improved Water Quality written by Douglas Greenley and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-01-16 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until recently, there has been general agreement that improvement and preservation of water quality, though costly, provided economic and social benefits that outweighed the expense. Now, however, some observers are beginning to question whether the costs of the 1972 Water Pollution Control Act may actually exceed those benefits. This book provides answers to some of the questions that have been raised. The authors give measures of several important nonmarket benefits of improved water quality in Colorado's South Platte River Basin and empirically test and confirm the Weisbrod and Krutilla proposals that the general public may be willing to pay for preservation of environmental amenities and that option value and other preservation values must be added to recreation-use values to give an accurate picture of the social benefits of environmental preservation and restoration. Their findings include the fact that even those who do not expect to use the river basin for recreation are willing to pay for the maintenance of a natural ecosystem and to bequest clean water to future generations. The authors also arrive at average amounts households are willing to pay for improved water quality to enhance enjoyment of water-based recreation activities. They suggest that, without such information, it is highly unlikely that sufficient resources will be allocated for the preservation of unique environments and for the improvement of those being degraded.

Book Determining the Economic Value of Water

Download or read book Determining the Economic Value of Water written by Robert A. Young and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-07-23 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water provides benefits as a commodity for agriculture, industry, and households, and as a public good such as fisheries habitat, water quality and recreational use. To aid in cost-benefit analysis under conditions where market determined price signals are usually unavailable, economists have developed a range of alternative valuation methods for measuring economic benefits. This volume provides the most comprehensive exposition to-date of the application of economic valuation methods to proposed water resources investments and policies. It provides a conceptual framework for valuation of both commodity and public good uses of water, addressing non-market valuation techniques appropriate to measuring public benefits - including water quality improvement, recreation, and fish habitat enhancement. The book describes the various measurement methods, illustrates how they are applied in practice, and discusses their strengths, limitations, and appropriate roles. In this second edition, all chapters have been thoroughly updated, and in particular the coverage of water markets and valuation of ecosystem services from water has been expanded. Robert Young, author of the 2005 edition, has been joined for this new edition by John Loomis, who brings additional expertise on ecosystem services and the environmental economics of water for recreational and other public good uses of water.

Book Measuring the Value of Water Quality Improvements for Recreation Use on an Urban River in the USA

Download or read book Measuring the Value of Water Quality Improvements for Recreation Use on an Urban River in the USA written by Joy Deep Chakrabartty and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We estimate the value of water quality improvements for recreational activities on and near the Brandywine Creek in Delaware. We divide water-based recreational activities into two groups: water-contact and non-water-contact. We then consider the behavioral change of the recreationists in each group when faced with water quality improvements posed in a stated preference (contingent behavior) survey. We use five common physical attributes of water quality in the contingent behavior analysis: water clarity, catch rate of fish, safety of eating fish, safety for swimming, and ecological health. The survey was constructed in such a way that each of these attributes of water quality are valued. The per trip value for water quality improvements ranged from $4 to $63 for contact use and from $4 to $29 for non-contact use depending on which and how many attributes of water quality improve. Even though we measure sizable benefits, costs are likely to exceed benefits based on preliminary cost estimates.

Book Using the Travel Cost Method to Estimate Fresh Water Based Recreation in North Central Florida

Download or read book Using the Travel Cost Method to Estimate Fresh Water Based Recreation in North Central Florida written by Bryan Nguyen and published by . This book was released on 2018-11-29 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: This thesis examines recreational benefits provided by several spring sites located in North Central Florida using the travel cost method (TCM). The first part of the study estimates the travel demand for springs using data collected from on-site intercept surveys from four springs in North and Central Florida. The second part derives the consumer welfare using the consumer surplus (CS), which represents the benefits from visiting the springs. To examine the robustness of the estimated CS further a sensitivity analysis of the calculated travel cost variable was performed. Lastly, to examine whether the individuals clarity response can be explained by the physical environmental measures presence in the springs. The results of the TCM estimation are consistent with previously published CS estimates and are on the high end in terms of dollar amount. The CS of the four sites is valued at $144,497,642 with an average trip valued at $177.49 per person per trip, with a 95% confidence interval (CI) of $141.78-$234.04. However, the results of the sensitivity analysis of TCM yields some insightful results with higher projected CS value of the spring sites. The perception link between individuals clarity rating and the physical water measures using the ordered logistic regression estimation output could not be explained based on the results. The dependent variables used did not yield any link in relation to the individual perception. The results imply individuals place a substantial value on the CS estimated of the springs in North Central Florida. Using the TCM is one of the many ways to estimate the value of the springs. The results of this study will help inform key decision-makers on recommendations for protecting springs from further degradation due to economic growth and need of water resources. While the study provides a recreational value of individuals view placed on the springs, decision-makers will need to use the information to implement new policies at the State and County levels to preserve the spring sites for future generations.
