Book excerpt: This volume details Nantucket's long history from European settlement in 1659 to whaling culture and Quaker influence to tourist destination. Nantucket, a Wampanoag word meaning far-away island, was first settled by Europeans in 1659. The earliest settlers, known as the Proprietors, envisioned a community of farmers and shepherds, but the island found its fortune as a preeminent whaling port in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. During its time under Quaker influence, Nantucket was a cosmopolitan and dynamic place; radical new ideas, like abolitionism and women's rights, found fertile ground in the Quakers' firm belief in equality. As the entrance to the harbor became impassable, Nantucket lost its whaling focus and experienced a general economic decline. Ironically, this downturn and the resulting absence of new building, along with modern cultural change, became the springboard for its later revival. Nantucket was transformed into a tourist destination, an artist colony, and a summer home to the wealthy and famous, with a rich maritime heritage and a proud tradition of historic preservation.

On a given summer day the population swells to more than forty thousand people. The summer months bring a steady stream of visitors who flock to the extraordinary beauty and history of Nantucket’s shores, its clear skies, and its southwest breezes. Just as important is the year-round community of people who choose to stay through the winter months. The off-season brings Nantucket to its essence—the peaceful and vibrant autumn, windy winters long and gray, followed by the short season of spring. Nantucket residents learn to love its quirky seasons, filled as they are with frustrating travel experiences, weather stories, and isolation. Filled with over 130 poignant color photographs illuminating the island’s distinct seasons, Nantucket displays the best from a body of work covering the past decade. Images paired with thoughtful words by island residents and a foreword by best-selling author and summer resident David Michaelis make this book an enduring portrayal of Nantucket.

Download or read book Time and Tide written by Frank Conroy and published by Crown. This book was released on 2007-12-18 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frank Conroy first visited Nantucket with a gang of college friends in 1955. They came on a whim, and for Conroy it was the beginning of a lifelong love affair with this "small, relaxed oasis in the ocean." This book, part travel diary, part memoir, is a hauntingly evocative and personal journey through Nantucket: its sweeping dunes, rugged moors, remote beaches, secret fishing spots, and hidden forests and cranberry bogs. Admirers of Conroy’s classic and acclaimed memoir Stop-Time will again delight in what James Atlas, writing in the New York Times, called his "genius for close observation." In Time and Tide, Conroy recounts the island’s history from the glory days of the whaling boom to the present, when tourism dominates. He vividly evokes the clash of cultures between the working class and the super-rich, with the fragile ecology of the island always in the balance. But most fascinating of all, he tells his own story--of playing jazz piano in the island’s bars; of raising a barn in the early '60s with the help of a bunch of hippie carpenters; of leasing an old, failed bar with two island pals and turning it into the Roadhouse, a club "that was to be ours, the year-rounders, and to hell with the summer people." There’s a marvelous story of his first golf game, played on an ancient nine-hole course with two friends, a part-time sommelier and a builder from the South who invented the one-handed pepper mill. This is a book that revels in friendship, music, history, and the gorgeous landscape of a unique American place, and is a wonderful work by one of our greatest contemporary writers.

Meet the Cold Water Army of seven hundred schoolchildren who paraded against King Alcohol in hopes that the island would become a temperance oasis. Little remains of the bathing pavilion and water slide of the long-lost town of Coatue that once had big plans for expansion.
