Book Beyond the Quartic Equation

Download or read book Beyond the Quartic Equation written by R. Bruce King and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-01-16 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this book is to present for the first time the complete algorithm for roots of the general quintic equation with enough background information to make the key ideas accessible to non-specialists and even to mathematically oriented readers who are not professional mathematicians. The book includes an initial introductory chapter on group theory and symmetry, Galois theory and Tschirnhausen transformations, and some elementary properties of elliptic function in order to make some of the key ideas more accessible to less sophisticated readers. The book also includes a discussion of the much simpler algorithms for roots of the general quadratic, cubic, and quartic equations before discussing the algorithm for the roots of the general quintic equation. A brief discussion of algorithms for roots of general equations of degrees higher than five is also included. "If you want something truly unusual, try [this book] by R. Bruce King, which revives some fascinating, long-lost ideas relating elliptic functions to polynomial equations." --New Scientist

  • Publisher : John Wiley & Sons

  • ISBN : 1118449193
  • Pages : 464 pages

Download or read book Algebra written by William G. McCallum and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2014-11-25 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Algebra: Form and Function was designed based on the fundamental goal for a student to foster understanding of algebraic structure- that is, an understanding of how the arrangements of symbols allows us to predict, for example, the behavior of a function or the number of solutions to an equation. Mastering algebraic structure enables students to read algebraic expressions and equations in real-life contexts, not just manipulate them, and to choose which form or which operation will best suit the context. It facilitates being able to translate back and forth between symbolic, graphical, numerical, and verbal representations. By balancing practice in manipulation and opportunities to see the big picture, Algebra: Form and Function offers a way for teachers to help students achieve real mastery of algebra.

Book The William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition

Download or read book The William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition written by A. M. Gleason and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2019-07-24 with total page 652 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Back by popular demand, we are pleased to reissue this outstanding collection of problems and solutions from the Putnam Competitions covering the years 1938-1964. Problemists the world over, including all past and future Putnam Competitors, will revel in mastering the difficulties posed by this collection of problems from the first 25 William Lowell Putnam Competitions. Solutions to all 347 problems are given. In some cases multiple solutions are included, some which contestants could reasonably be expected to find under examination conditions, and others which are more elegant or utilize more sophisticated techniques. Valuable references and historical comments on many of the problems are presented. The book concludes with four articles on the Putnam competition written by G. Birkhoff, L. E. Bush, L. J. Mordell, and L. M. Kelly which are reprinted from the American Mathematical Monthly. There is great appeal here for all; teachers, students, and all those who love good problems and see them as an entree to beautiful and powerful ideas.

Book A Modern Approach to Functional Integration

Download or read book A Modern Approach to Functional Integration written by John R. Klauder and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-11-08 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text takes advantage of recent developments in the theory of path integration and attempts to make a major paradigm shift in how the art of functional integration is practiced. The techniques developed in the work will prove valuable to graduate students and researchers in physics, chemistry, mathematical physics, and applied mathematics who find it necessary to deal with solutions to wave equations, both quantum and beyond. A Modern Approach to Functional Integration offers insight into a number of contemporary research topics, which may lead to improved methods and results that cannot be found elsewhere in the textbook literature. Exercises are included in most chapters, making the book suitable for a one-semester graduate course on functional integration.

Book Algebra and Geometry

    Book Details:
  • Author : Hongxi Wu
  • Publisher : American Mathematical Soc.
  • Release : 2020-09-08

Download or read book Algebra and Geometry written by Hongxi Wu and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2020-09-08 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second of three volumes that, together, give an exposition of the mathematics of grades 9–12 that is simultaneously mathematically correct and grade-level appropriate. The volumes are consistent with CCSSM (Common Core State Standards for Mathematics) and aim at presenting the mathematics of K–12 as a totally transparent subject. The first part of this volume is devoted to the study of standard algebra topics: quadratic functions, graphs of equations of degree 2 in two variables, polynomials, exponentials and logarithms, complex numbers and the fundamental theorem of algebra, and the binomial theorem. Having translations and the concept of similarity at our disposal enables us to clarify the study of quadratic functions by concentrating on their graphs, the same way the study of linear functions is greatly clarified by knowing that their graphs are lines. We also introduce the concept of formal algebra in the study of polynomials with complex coefficients. The last three chapters in this volume complete the systematic exposition of high school geometry that is consistent with CCSSM. These chapters treat the geometry of the triangle and the circle, ruler and compass constructions, and a general discussion of axiomatic systems, including non-Euclidean geometry and the celebrated work of Hilbert on the foundations. This book should be useful for current and future teachers of K–12 mathematics, as well as for some high school students and for education professionals.
