Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two similar tapered sweptback plan forms with the same two spanwise variations of twist have been tested in the Mach number range from 0.8 to 2.0. The test results showed, in general, rather good agreement with theoretical predictions of the incremental span loadings due to twist for zero angle of attack. The measured incremental span loadings due to twist generally diminished with increasing angle of attack through the Mach number range. At a Mach number of 0.9, the incremental loadings progressively vanished from the tip inboard with increasing angle of attack. For the highest angles of attack (about 20 degrees) at Mach number 0.9, there was no difference in the span loadings of the flat and twisted wings. At a higher supersonic speeds, a similar vanishing at the tips of the incremental loading due to twist was starting at the highest angles of attack (near 20 degrees).

Book excerpt: The method of computing velocity and pressure distributions along wing profiles under the assumption of the simplified density-speed relation, outlined in NACA Technical Note 1006, is extended to the case of a nonsymmetrical profile and a flow with circulation. The shape of the profile, the speed of the undisturbed flow, and a parameter determing the angle of attack may be prescribed. The problem is reduced to a nonlinear integral equation which can be solved numerical by an iteration method. A numerical example is given.

The basic assumption is that of a flat horizontal sheet of vortices trailing behind the wing. The integrations for the downwash are handled in a manner similar to both Multhopp's and Weissinger's approximate integrations in their span-loading calculations. The principal effects of rolling-up of the wake are treated as corrections to the flat-sheet wake. A simple approximate correction for the effect of the fuselage is applied. The agreement with available experimental data taken behind airplane models is good. Computing forms are included together with charts of pertinent functions, so as to enable simple direct application.

Book excerpt: Wind-tunnel flutter investigations at Mach numbers up to 0.30 have been conducted on a 40 degree sweptback wing having pylon-mounted stores located at 73.5 percent of the semispan. The investigations were conducted on a semispan-cantilever wing with root fixed and with the full-span wing mounted on an autopilot-controlled model of a fighter-type airplane flown on the end of a towline. The store loadings were varied from 55 to 88 percent of the wing-panel weight, and the store pitch inertias were varied from 66 to 181 percent of the wing-panel pitch inertia. Most of the data were obtained with the store centers of gravity located at 15 percent of the local wing chord.
