Download or read book On the Whole Doctrine of Final Causes Vol 3 written by William J. Irons and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Whole Doctrine of Final Causes, Vol. 3: A Dissertation in Three Parts, With an Introductory Chapter on the Character of Modern Deism So little attention is ordinarily paid to what an Author says of his own performance, that a Preface is now almost thought to be a superfluous piece of labour. But for the sake of those who may yet consider it as a courtesy due to the Reader, as well as for my own sake, I shall venture to trespass for a few lines. It may appear to many, that the phrase "Whole Doctrine," used in the Title-page, requires some explanation; which, I own, I have difficulty in briefly giving; though on a general review of the Dissertation, I cannot persuade myself to alter it. Book The Reformed Objection to Natural Theology

Download or read book The Reformed Objection to Natural Theology written by Dr Michael Sudduth and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2013-06-28 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Michael Sudduth examines three prominent objections to natural theology that have emerged in the Reformed streams of the Protestant theological tradition: objections from the immediacy of our knowledge of God, the noetic effects of sin, and the logic of theistic arguments. Distinguishing between the project of natural theology and particular models of natural theology, Sudduth argues that none of the main Reformed objections is successful as an objection to the project of natural theology itself. One particular model of natural theology - the dogmatic model - is best suited to handle Reformed concerns over natural theology. According to this model, rational theistic arguments represent the reflective reconstruction of the natural knowledge of God by the Christian in the context of dogmatic theology. Informed by both contemporary religious epistemology and the history of Protestant philosophical theology, Sudduth’'s examination illuminates the complex nature of the project of natural theology and its place in the Reformed tradition.

Book Science and Religion

Download or read book Science and Religion written by Pietro Corsi and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1988 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Science and Religion assesses the impact of social, political and intellectual change upon Anglican circles, with reference to Oxford University in the decades that followed the French Revolution and the Napoleonic wars. More particularly, the career of Baden Powell, father of the more famous founder of the Boy Scout movement, offers material for an important case-study in intellectual and political reorientation: his early militancy in right-wing Anglican movements slowly turned to a more tolerant attitude towards radical theological, philosophical and scientific trends. During the 1840s and 1850s, Baden Powell became a fearless proponent of new dialogues in transcendentalism in theology, positivism in philosophy, and pre-Darwinian evolutionary theories in biology. He was for instance the first prominent Anglican to express full support for Darwin's Origin of Species. Analysis of his many publications, and of his interaction with such contemporaries as Richard Whately, John Henry and Francis Newman, Robert Chambers, William Benjamin Carpenter, George Henry Lewes and George Eliot, reveals hitherto unnoticed dimensions of mid-nineteenth-century British intellectual and social life.
