Book excerpt: "[An] emotion-charged mystery.... Keller's sleuths are easy to like and the murder story is moving; but the object of fascination here is Wellwood, a state-run mental institution with a dark history as a repository for 'rebellious, unruly women.'" —The New York Times Book Review Pulitzer Prize-winning author Julia Keller welcomes readers back to West Virginia, where her lyrical and moving stories of the people of her native state have unfolded since A Killing in the Hills, the acclaimed first novel in the series. Deep in the woods just outside Acker's Gap, West Virginia, rises a ragged chunk of what was once a high stone wall. This is all that remains of Wellwood, a psychiatric hospital for the poor that burned to the ground decades ago. And it is here that Bell Elkins – prosecutor turned private investigator – makes a grim discovery while searching for a missing teenager: A dead body, marred by a ghastly wound that can only mean murder. To solve the mystery of what happened in these woods where she played as a child, Bell and her partners – former sheriff Nick Fogelsong and former deputy Jake Oakes – must confront the tangled history of Wellwood and its dark legacy, while each grapples with a private torment. Based on a true chapter in the troubled history of early treatment for psychiatric illness, The Cold Way Home is a story of death and life, of despair and hope, of crime and – sometimes, but not always – punishment.

Book excerpt: Can one city's solutions to homelessness help the United States face the issue nationally? The United States grapples with a solution for the unhoused by employing a patchwork of uneven rhetoric and policy. How can policymakers and public health professionals address this urgent problem in more innovative and sustainable ways? In Way Home, Josephine Ensign explores the contemporary landscape of homelessness by focusing on Seattle in King County to assess how their innovative local solutions can be scaled up nationally. From consumer-led shelter programs to the expansion of the Housing First model of care, Seattle-King County is a leader in this area. Ensign assesses the effectiveness of policies such as child tax credits, rental subsidies, eviction moratoriums, and programs for vehicle residents. As an expert in the field who has also experienced homelessness, Ensign draws from an extensive oral history project to share poignant firsthand accounts that inform and enrich her storytelling. This narrative incorporates human rights, support services, public health issues, and a path forward that acknowledges the true realities of people living unhoused. Amid the rapidly evolving public health and political landscape accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic, Way Home deepens our understanding of the historical roots of homelessness and highlights innovative public policy and program efforts at the national, state, and local levels to address it.

Book excerpt: In 1968, twenty-one-year-old Fred McCarthy transitioned from the monastic life of a seminary student to that of a U.S. Army helicopter gunship commander in Vietnam. Despite preparation from a family tradition of decorated combat service, a strong sense of patriotism, a love for aviation, and a desire for adventure, he got far more than he bargained for. Written after 50 years of reflection, reading, and study, this memoir tells both a universal story about war, adventure, and perseverance and, also shares the intensely personal experience of the Vietnam War and its legacy for those who fought in it. McCarthy describes many of his missions, reflects on the nature of being a combat helicopter pilot, and processes the experience through his poetry, letters home, and reflective analysis.

Book excerpt: Mother’s Statement: This book is about our experience with my daughter Debra’s walk with cancer. It is every mother’s nightmare — losing a child. It began the first day my daughter was diagnosed. Never did I consider the possibility that my diary would serve any purpose other than to try to understand the mystery and confusions, or lack of information, or misinformation during her treatments; also our hopes, disappointments, the roller-coaster of emotions, and the confusing medications. We have never been able to verify her treatments, as after numerous requests, we were not given Debra’s medical records.
Download or read book From Beneath the Surface written by Karen Maddox and published by Author House. This book was released on 2012-06-14 with total page 580 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The third chapter of the Holy Bibles book of Ecclesiastes begins To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven . . . (KJV). This book is but a mere sample of observations made during various times the author experienced or an effort to capture a state of being or mood and express it through poetryas a christian. Being one who has made many mistakes (but acknowledging the Lord in all ways so that God can direct her path), From Beneath The Surface begins with an attempt to state the authors understanding of what Christianity is to her. One of the first few poems admits I Dont Know with regard to where to begin as a christian witness while continuing to seek the Lords purpose for her life. First View gives a brief glimpse of the authors humble beginnings. All poems in between the covers (from Fear to Givin Up) attempts to convey thoughts experienced while passing through situations while outside of Gods will (He Felt That Way One Day, Romantic Fool Unleashed, etc.)having gotten off track (Reality Attack)as well as inside of Gods will. Praying to God with Lord These People Need Help; understanding comes through Love Anyway; then a few philosophical words shared through such poems as Room For All and Grains of Sand. The author ends with the poem Keep the Faith Alive! which confirms that no matter what lies ahead, with faith in God, the Lord will see you through. Heres written proof that even a person with a messed-up life can witness for the Lord when called to do so. Having experienced hurt, abuse, anguish, pain, heartache, deception, discrimination, rejection, etc. (just like everyone else has), after prayerfully reading the Holy Bible, the author has grown to understand that love (in a godly mannerwith patience, kindness, endurance, steadfastness, etc.) is what the christian is supposed to do as Christs representative. Regardless of the situation or circumstance, ones belief, faith and love of God should shine through because With God, all things are possible. Please note that although this compilation was first copyrighted in May 1990, all works were written prior to 1988 and additional material has been added reflective through current situation. With a goal of putting something positive back into her communitywithout stepping on or using others to do so, Karen utilizes God-given talent and ability to interpret her lifes situation. (One could say these works touch on existentialisma philosophy centered upon the analysis of ones existence in the worldwith regard to the authors relationship with God at different times in her life.) Hopefully, this book will be a good representation. From Beneath The Surface is a book written from Karens heart, with her hand and in lovebased on her lifes experiences. As you share, please keep this in mindnothing contained herein is intended to offend any person, place or thing. Hopefully, inspiration to learn and grow in Gods Word, the Holy Bible, will be ignited, lighting the pathway for Jesus love to come into your heart, guiding you through your lifes journey.
