Those who have never been Christians m a spir itual sense, rhaps ill understand how it com bines unsel lsmess with a sense of the commu nion of saints and union with God in Christ. A young Christian who, erhaps for the first time, receives the Lord's upper in what he sup poses to be a choice collection of saintly commu uieante from the hands Of a peculiar y saintly minister, has an inexpressible pdelight by more presence in so select an assembly. No one of them knows him; he does not desire to be known, he seeks no introductions; but he feels that everything around him is sacred. A thrilling sense Of joy which ma mount into transport suggests to him what wil be the bless edness of that state where all hearts are in har mony with God, and thereby With one another. To im ute as sel shness the desire that such a king om of may come, - the desire to see its realization - is surely a very7 great mistake. The desire was plainly uttered, ong before the Christian Era, 1n the Hebrew Psalms - Re member me, Q Lord, with the favor that thou bearest unto thy people: 0 visit me With thy sal vation; that I may see the felicity of the chosen ones anti rejoice' ln ythe gladness thy heritage. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Visions of Heaven and Hell: What Men and Women Claim to Have Seen, in the World Beyond What the inspiring cause of the experiences related in this book was, is a matter we cannot determine for the reader. But we are inclined to believe that what these people claim to have seen and heard was revealed to their inner or spirit consciousness by God, or by other spirit or angelic intelligences from a sphere higher than that of Earth. All who read these accounts with candor must be deeply impressed with their solemnity. What a hallowed, quickening influence comes to the soul while perusing the narrators' testimony of what they saw and heard of the beauties of Heaven and its happy, glorious inhabitants and what sadness and awe fall upon the heart when reading of the terrors of Hell and the anguish of the unfortunates consigned to its gloom. Book A Contribution to the Comparative Study of the Medieval Visions of Heaven and Hell Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Contribution to the Comparative Study of the Medieval Visions of Heaven and Hell Classic Reprint written by Ernest Julius Becker and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Contribution to the Comparative Study of the Medieval Visions of Heaven and Hell The present study represents the result of an attempt to compare more closely than has hitherto been done the English medieval Visions of Heaven and Hell. The original plan was to specialize on one particular work (the Vision of St. Paul), and using it as a point of departure, to bring the other similar works into organic connection with it and with one another. Almost inevitably, however, the field for investigation grew broader and broader as the work went on; new and important points of contact constantly presented themselves, and it very soon became evident that the study, in order to attain even a partial degree of completeness, could not be confined within the boundaries of England. In order to trace the incidents of the English visions back to their ultimate sources, it became imperative to consider carefully certain intermediate continental works in connection with them; and from these it was but a short step to the earlier and more primitive works which constitute the foundation of medieval vision-literature. No systematic comparative study of the visions, with a view to tracing their oldest elements to their sources, has yet been attempted. Such an undertaking, necessitating as it would a careful analysis of the forms which the doctrine of an after-life assumed among the various peoples, and a painstaking collation of the many elements thus obtained, would severely tax the powers of any single investigator. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sufficiency and Defects of the English Communion Office HE object which led to the enterprise of this subject was essentially practical. Considerable outcry had been raised against the interpolation into the service by the Celebrant of parts of the Unreformed Office. The outcry interpreted this action as throwing doubt or discredit on the Office of our Church. And this interpretation is justified by the open avowals of many who are addicted to this practice. They allege defect or deficiency in our Office. Others, indeed, without such allegation or conscious admission, defend their interpolations as conducing to greater fulness or richness. The object of this work in part'is to attempt to disprove the charges of insufficiency and to show the redundancy of such interpolations. The nature of the interpolations in View has been already defined. There is no reference to any private1 intercessions or devo tions of the Celebrant, but to the direct interpolation of portions of other Offices.
