Book On the use of clustered file organizations in information search and retrieval

Download or read book On the use of clustered file organizations in information search and retrieval written by Gerard Salton and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: "In modern retrieval environments, collection searches are normally conducted on-line under user control. Iterative collection searches can then be performed where tentative queries are initially processed, to be successively improved and refined during the search process. When searches are carried out directly by the users, classified document organizations are especially useful, because collection browsing becomes possible, and access is provided to complete groups of related documents. The state-of-the-art in automatic document classification is summarized in the present study, and evaluation data are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of clustered file search operations."

Book An Interactive Information Organization and Retrieval System in a Time sharing Environment

Download or read book An Interactive Information Organization and Retrieval System in a Time sharing Environment written by Mehdi Baghebanzadeh Kermani and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of the formatted file organization and retrieval systems, in particular, the scatter indexing methods, were the major part of the formatted systems which are investigated. The upper bound of such an index file using single and multiple attribute queries is studied and obtained. In the general file systems, the study begins with the investigation of some of the existing systems, leads to some possible improvement observations, and finally results in the projection-angle (PRANG) clustering technique. This method of clustering partitions the process into two individual processes and associates records according to joint similarity and simultaneously makes it easier to locate the proper cluster in the retrieval phase. An operating system for this method using the TSS 940 time-sharing computer system at the Berkeley campus is implemented and the results of such a system for two data bases are studied. The Prang system is able to produce clusters for such data bases and thus organize proper information retrieval systems. The retrieval of the system results in orderly related records of the file with an associating factor for the retrieved records. (Author).

Book Clustering and Information Retrieval

Download or read book Clustering and Information Retrieval written by Weili Wu and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2003-11-30 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Clustering is an important technique for discovering relatively dense sub-regions or sub-spaces of a multi-dimension data distribution. Clus tering has been used in information retrieval for many different purposes, such as query expansion, document grouping, document indexing, and visualization of search results. In this book, we address issues of cluster ing algorithms, evaluation methodologies, applications, and architectures for information retrieval. The first two chapters discuss clustering algorithms. The chapter from Baeza-Yates et al. describes a clustering method for a general metric space which is a common model of data relevant to information retrieval. The chapter by Guha, Rastogi, and Shim presents a survey as well as detailed discussion of two clustering algorithms: CURE and ROCK for numeric data and categorical data respectively. Evaluation methodologies are addressed in the next two chapters. Ertoz et al. demonstrate the use of text retrieval benchmarks, such as TRECS, to evaluate clustering algorithms. He et al. provide objective measures of clustering quality in their chapter. Applications of clustering methods to information retrieval is ad dressed in the next four chapters. Chu et al. and Noel et al. explore feature selection using word stems, phrases, and link associations for document clustering and indexing. Wen et al. and Sung et al. discuss applications of clustering to user queries and data cleansing. Finally, we consider the problem of designing architectures for infor mation retrieval. Crichton, Hughes, and Kelly elaborate on the devel opment of a scientific data system architecture for information retrieval.
