Book excerpt: According to the Christian father Origen, Celsus (/ˈsɛlsəs/; Greek: ΚέΛΣΟς. Klsos) was a 2nd-century Greek philosopher and opponent of Early Christianity. He is known for his literary work, The True Word (also Account, Doctrine or Discourse; Greek: ΛόΓΟς ἈΛΗ&thΗής), which survives exclusively in Origen's quotations from it in Contra Celsum. This work, c. 177 is the earliest known comprehensive attack on Christianity.According to Origen, Celsus was the author of an anti-Christian work titled The True Word (Alēthēs logos). This work was lost, but we have Origen's account of it in his writings. It was during the reign of Philip the Arab that Origen received this work for rebuttal. Origen's refutation of The True Word contained its text, interwoven with Origen's replies. Origen's work has survived and thereby preserved Celsus' work with it.Celsus seems to have been interested in Ancient Egyptian religion, and he seemed to know of Hellenistic Jewish logos-theology, both of which suggest The True Word was composed in Alexandria. Celsus wrote at a time when Christianity purportedly was being persecuted and when there seems to have been more than one emperor. As an anti-Christian Greek philosopher, Celsus mounted an attack on Christianity. Celsus wrote that some Jews said Jesus' father was a Roman soldier named Pantera. The views of Celsus drew responses from Origen who considered it a fabricated story. Raymond E. Brown states that the story of Pantera is a fanciful explanation of the birth of Jesus which includes very little historical evidence--Brown's analysis does not presuppose the doctrine of the "virgin birth", but cites the lack of historical evidence for Celsus' assertion. In addition, Celsus addressed the miracles of Jesus, holding that "Jesus performed His miracles by sorcery (ΓΟΗΤΕίΑ)".

Book Should Christianity Abandon the Doctrine of the Trinity

Download or read book Should Christianity Abandon the Doctrine of the Trinity written by Michael Barber and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 2006-11 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a highly controversial exposition of a doctrine which has dominated Christianity for two thousand years. The book takes apart, piece by piece, the very foundation that so many religions use to support the belief that there are three persons in one God. It analyses the major scriptural references pointed to in Trinity support texts, and examines them in the light of biblical context and by original-language comparisons. World-renowned authorities on biblical Hebrew and Greek are sought for their views on these key scriptures. This is a compelling book which turns the very foundation of Christianity onto its head.

Book Mary Magdalene from the New Testament to the New Age and Beyond

Download or read book Mary Magdalene from the New Testament to the New Age and Beyond written by Edmondo F. Lupieri and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2019-10-14 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An international team of twenty scholars under Edmondo F. Lupieri’s direction produced Mary Magdalene from the New Testament to the New Age and Beyond. While the historical figure of the Magdalene may be lost forever, the construction of her literary images and their transformations and adaptations over the centuries are a lively testimony to human creativity and faith. Different pictures of Mary travelled through time and space, from history to legend and mythology, crossed religious boundaries, going beyond the various Christianities, to become a “sign of contradiction” for many. This book describes a special case of biblical reception history, that of the New Testament figure of a woman whose presence at the side of Jesus has been disturbing for some, but proves to be inspiring for others.

Book Gregory of Nyssa Against Eunomius

Download or read book Gregory of Nyssa Against Eunomius written by Saint Gregory of Nyssa and published by Aeterna Press. This book was released on with total page 491 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It seems that the wish to benefit all, and to lavish indiscriminately upon the first comer one’s own gifts, was not a thing altogether commendable, or even free from reproach in the eyes of the many; seeing that the gratuitous waste of many prepared drugs on the incurably-diseased produces no result worth caring about, either in the way of gain to the recipient, or reputation to the would-be benefactor. Rather such an attempt becomes in many cases the occasion of a change for the worse. The hopelessly-diseased and now dying patient receives only a speedier end from the more active medicines; the fierce unreasonable temper is only made worse by the kindness of the lavished pearls, as the Gospel tells us. I think it best, therefore, in accordance with the Divine command, for any one to separate the valuable from the worthless when either have to be given away, and to avoid the pain which a generous giver must receive from one who treads upon his pearl,’ and insults him by his utter want of feeling for its beauty.

Book Simply Christian

  • Author : N. T. Wright
  • Publisher : Zondervan
  • Release : 2010-02-09
  • ISBN : 0061920622
  • Pages : 260 pages

Download or read book Simply Christian written by N. T. Wright and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2010-02-09 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why is justice fair? Why are so many people pursuing spirituality? Why do we crave relationship? And why is beauty so beautiful? N. T. Wright argues that each of these questions takes us into the mystery of who God is and what he wants from us. For two thousand years Christianity has claimed to answer these mysteries, and this renowned biblical scholar and Anglican bishop shows that it still does today. Like C. S. Lewis did in his classic Mere Christianity, Wright makes the case for Christian faith from the ground up, assuming that the reader is starting from ground zero with no predisposition to and perhaps even some negativity toward religion in general and Christianity in particular. His goal is to describe Christianity in as simple and accessible, yet hopefully attractive and exciting, a way as possible, both to say to outsides ÔYou might want to look at this further,Ö and to say to insiders ÔYou may not have quite understood this bit clearly yet.Ö

Book excerpt: The famous polemic of Celsus, the Greek Neoplatonist philosopher and staunch opponent of the early Christians, survives exclusively in quotations found in Origen's 'Contra Celsum'. This brilliant, classic translation of the earliest surviving substantial criticism of Christianity is being published separately for the first time. This translation of Celsus' fragments, from the Latin of Origen, remains the best available in English. Only the most minor modifications to the text have been made for this edition, mainly substituting for archaic English words. The translation originally appeared in John Patrick's 'The Apology of Origen in Reply to Celsus: A Chapter in the History of Apologetics'.

Book The Pattern of Christian Truth

Download or read book The Pattern of Christian Truth written by H. E. W. Turner and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2004-10-29 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Walter Bauer's 'Orthodoxy and Heresy in Earliest Christianity' created a stir with its argument that the teachings later condemned as heresy, in the later second century onward, were, in fact, dominant in the earliest decades of the church. This full-scale response by H. E. W. Turner has not enjoyed the attention it deserves. Turner's volume represents a learned and sophisticated restatement of the traditional view: what became official orthodoxy was taught early on by the majority of church teachers, albeit not in fully developed form.
