Sometimes a committee can only accept or reject the proposals submitted to it for a decision. On other occasions, committee members have the possibility of modifying the proposal and bargaining an agreement prior to the vote. In either case, what rule should be used if each member acts on behalf of a different-sized group? It seems intuitively clear that if the groups are of different sizes then a symmetric rule (e.g. the simple majority or unanimity) is not suitable. The question then arises of what voting rule should be used. Voting and Collective Decision-Making addresses this and other issues through a study of the theory of bargaining and voting power, showing how it applies to real decision-making contexts.

What factors determine the outcomes of such negotiations? What strategies can help reach an agreement? How should the parties involved divide the gains from cooperation? Despite the fact that allocation of natural resources, especially trans-boundary allocation, has all the characteristics of a negotiation problem, there are not many applications of formal negotiation theory to the issue. Therefore, the authors first discuss the noncooperative bargaining models applied to water allocation problems found in the literature. Key findings include the important role noncooperative negotiations can play in cases where binding agreements cannot be signed; the value added of politically and socially acceptable compromises; and the need for a negotiated model that considers incomplete information over the negotiated resource.

In der Literaturbetrachtung des zweiten Teils werden verschiedene Artikel zusammengefasst, die in der Motivation geschrieben wurden die tatsächliche Beobachtung von Emotionen in verhandlungstheoretischen Experimenten zu erklären und Modelle (weiter) zu entwickeln, die diesen Beobachtungen Rechnung tragen. Im dritten Teil wird am Beispiel einer spezifischen Verhandlungssituation – dem Verhandeln über den Lohn eines Berufseinsteigers– der Einfluss von Emotionen mit Inspiration aus der Literatur intersucht. With the present work, the combination of well-known bargaining models of game theory with different approaches to study the influence of emotions on the outcome of negotiations was observed. Basis is the Rubinstein game that is explained in detail in the first part. The second part concludes various items which were written in the motivation to explain the observations of emotions made in actual bargaing-theoretical experiments, and to develop models that take those observations into account. In the third part a specific negotiation situation is exemplary represented- the bargaining over wages of a job applicant- to observe the influence of emotions, inspired by the methods of the literature investigated earlier. Moreover, a model is presented which can calculate the output of specific negotiation situations more accurately.

This paper proposes a non-cooperative foundation for "Nash-in-Nash" bargaining that extends the Rubinstein (1982) alternating offers model to multiple upstream and downstream firms. We provide conditions on firms' marginal contributions under which there exists, for sufficiently short time between offers, an equilibrium with agreement among all firms at prices arbitrarily close to "Nash-in-Nash prices"--i.e., each pair's Nash bargaining solution given agreement by all other pairs. Conditioning on equilibria without delayed agreement, limiting prices are unique. Unconditionally, they are unique under stronger assumptions.

Book excerpt: "A growing body of evidence suggests that an important reason why firms do not change prices nearly as much as standard theory predicts is out of concern for disrupting ongoing customer relationships because price changes may be viewed as "unfair". Existing models that try to capture this concern regarding price-setting are all based on goods markets that are fundamentally Walrasian. In Walrasian goods markets, transactions are spot, making the idea of ongoing customer relationships somewhat difficult to understand. We develop a simple dynamic general equilibrium model of a search-based goods market to make precise the notion of a customer as a repeat buyer at a particular location. In this environment, the transactions price plays a distributive role as well as an allocative role. We exploit this distributive role of prices to explore how concerns for fairness influence price dynamics. Using pricing schemes with bargaining-theoretic foundations, we show that the particular way in which a "fair" outcome is determined matters for price dynamics. The most stark result we find is that complete price stability can arise endogenously. There are issues about which models based on standard Walrasian goods markets are silent"--P. 1.
