Book excerpt: A tribute to an extraordinary landscape now under severe threat. The exquisite photographs reveal the mountain ash forests of central Victoria to be one of Australia's great natural treasures. The city of Melbourne lies on the edge of a vast plain surrounded by a green and blue mountainous rim, whose hills and peaks are home to the magnificent Mountain Ash, the tallest flowering plant on the planet. The Mountain Ash forests were 20 million years in the making, and deep within the valleys are even more ancient, Gondwanic rainforests. The Great Forest showcases these forests as well as the world's tallest moss, breathtaking snow gum plateaus and the remnants of massive extinct volcanoes. The Great Forest is a tribute to extraordinary landscapes now under severe threat from logging and wildfires, such as the catastrophic fire that struck on Black Saturday in 2009. It uncovers the intricate webs of life that make Mountain Ash forests so much more than their towering trees. It explores the unique forests that have sustained the Gunaikurnai, Taungurung and Wurundjeri peoples for tens of thousands of years, and that provide a home for creatures found almost nowhere else. The exquisite photographs reveal the Central Highlands of Victoria to be one of Australia's largely undiscovered natural treasures. 'With its glorious photographs, The Great Forest shows why these forests must be preserved for future generations.' - Tim Flannery 'The Great Forest shows the incredible beauty, wonder and value of this amazing part of Victoria.' - David Pocock 'It's rare to read a book that fills your heart with joy and your eyes with tears, all at the same time. The Great Forest does just this.' - Sophie Cunningham 'This wonderful new book highlights the magnificent wet forests of Victoria, and why it is so critical to protect them for their biodiversity, their beauty, and for all of humanity.' - Dame Jane Goodall

Book Battle for the Central Highlands

Download or read book Battle for the Central Highlands written by George Dooley and published by Ballantine Books. This book was released on 2007-12-18 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE CENTRAL HIGHLANDS--WHERE DANGER REIGNED SUPREME AND DEATH WAS A CONSTANT COMPANION The fighting was fierce in the Central Highlands where Green Beret George Dooley served with elite Special Forces A-teams, training the rugged Montagnards in guerrilla warfare and accompanying them on patrols. The Viet Cong and NVA were entrenched in the sparsely populated Highlands, where towering mountains gave them the ruthless upper hand. The missions Dooley led, often in enemy territory, provided a steady diet of sniping, ambushes, booby traps, and mines. As the war escalated, Dooley commanded his own A-team, and the battles against the large numbers of crack NVA troops became even more desperate and deadly. By then military command routinely assigned anything-but-routine missions to Special Forces and expected them to meet their objectives. BATTLE FOR THE CENTRAL HIGHLANDS details the unbelievable valor of these legendary American warriors. . . .

Book The Defense of Community in Peru s Central Highlands

This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Florencia E. Mallon examines the development of capitalism in Peru's central highlands, depicting its impact on peasant village economy and society. She shows that the region's peasantry divided into an agrarian bourgeoisie and a rural proletariat during the period under discussion, although the surviving peasant ideology, village kinship networks, and the communality inspired by economic insecurity have sometimes obscured this division. Book Shaping the Future

Download or read book Shaping the Future written by Trausti Valsson and published by How the World will Change. This book was released on 2017-04-04 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an auto-biography of Trausti Valsson, an Icelandic architect, planner, theoretician and a professor of planning at the University of Iceland. It gives a personal account of what shaped planning and design in the world and in Iceland as he experienced it in his lifetime. Valsson e.g. tells about his personal encounter with Ian McHarg, Buckminster Fuller and Christopher Alexander. Early TV started working on a future plan for Iceland, consisting, for example, of roads connecting Iceland´s settlements, across the Central Highlands. He also started an overlay mapping project, mapping both the hazard- and resource areas of the country, which created a basis for his Iceland-Plan proposals. Work on this he continued at Berkeley and at the University of Iceland as he started teaching there in 1988. Many of his articles and books deal with this subject. In 1980 Valsson started his PhD studies in Environmental Planning at UC Berkeley, California. In the philosophical section of his dissertation he presented his argument that the Western, mechanistic worldview was the underlying cause for today´s alienation, and that more holistic and integrative schemes were inherent in Eastern worldviews. TV´s dissertation is called A Theory of Integration for Design and Planning – Based on the Concept of Complementarity (1987). In 1988 – a year after Valsson returned to Iceland – he got an associate professor position in planning at the Engineering Faculty of the University of Iceland, and later a tenured professor position. The last part of this book describes Valsson’s 27 years at the University. The title of this present book: Shaping the Future – Ideas – Planning – Design, reflects how wide Valsson´s field of his operation has been.

Book Steel and Blood

  • Author : Ha Mai Viet
  • Publisher : Naval Institute Press

  • ISBN : 1612514332
  • Pages : 482 pages

Download or read book Steel and Blood written by Ha Mai Viet and published by Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 2008-10-01 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When South Vietnam was abandoned by its American allies and consequently defeated by the North Vietnamese in 1975, all its military records were lost to the enemy. This has led to a paucity of factually based analyses of the war by South Vietnamese authors. In a project lasting some ten years, and financed by his own hard-earned resources, Colonel Viet has researched, documented, and analyzed the Vietnam War from the perspective of South Vietnamese armor forces, elements in which he himself played an important role as leader, teacher, and innovator. His travels to interview hundreds of people with first-hand knowledge of these matters took him back and forth across the United States (and to Canada, France and Australia) and enabled him to piece together the story as recalled by virtually every senior South Vietnamese who was involved, along with many of lesser rank but important experience, and many Americans as well. The result is a unique and invaluable work, one recounting from the early days of the Army of the Republic of Vietnam its organization and development, its combat operations, and its interaction with American advisors and then later with deployed American units. Viet tells this story as an historian would, not glossing over the shortcomings and failures of his fellow Vietnamese soldiers (or of the Americans), but also providing definitive accounts of their successes, their innovations, their courage and determination, and the hardships experienced and survived in the course of a long, difficult, and ultimately unsuccessful struggle. In Colonel Viet's words: "In order to give the truth back to history, we did not hide anything, whether it be victory or defeat." Finally, in a very touching portion of the work, Colonel Viet memorializes his fallen comrades of the armored force and commemorates the service of all the American advisors to the armored force he was able to identify.

Book Years of Renewal

Download or read book Years of Renewal written by Henry Kissinger and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2012-01-05 with total page 1169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This third and final volume of memoirs completes a major work of contemporary history and a brilliantly told narrative full of startling insights, candour and a sweeping sense of history. It begins with the resignation of Nixon - including Kissinger's final assessment of Nixon's tortured personality and the self-inflicted tragedy that ended his presidency, making Kissinger, for a time, the most powerful man in American government. This book abounds in crisis - Vietnam, Watergate, the Cold War. Here are brilliant scenes, as only an insider could write them, of the high-level meetings that shaped American foreign policy, the famous 'shuttle' diplomacy by which Kissinger succeeded in bringing a reluctant and wary Rabin and anxious Sadat together to begin to return of the Sinai to Egypt and the SALT talks with the Soviet Union that began the process of nuclear limitation. Here also are intimate and profound portraits of world leaders from Mao, teasing Kissinger while displaying a poetic wisdom, to Brezhnev at the Vladivostock summit, confused, ill-prepared, unwell, desperately to conceal the Soviet Union's difficulties with a screen of blustering bravado.

Book On the Road in the Central Highlands

Download or read book On the Road in the Central Highlands written by Al Hogue and published by . This book was released on 2020-01-30 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of the 250 photographs in this book were made from slides. That is why they are so clear and with such true color. Many of them look as though they were taken yesterday. I arrived in Vietnam in the summer of 1968 with an Agfa 35mm camera that I had purchased while stationed in Germany. The camera only lasted about one week in Vietnam because it was the Monsoon season in the Central Highlands, and rust from the rain and high humidity ruined it. Since the unit I was in never went into the 4th Infantry Division basecamp, Camp Enari, in Pleiku where the PX was, I spent the first half of my Vietnam tour of duty without a camera to document the extraordinary events, places, and people I encountered. Then, early in 1969, I went on R&R, and while in basecamp on my way to Hong Kong, I bought an Olympus 35mm camera at the PX. So, it was only during the last half of my tour, the first half of 1969, that I took all of the photos that I have now.Al Hogue, who was in the same mechanized infantry scout squad as me, also took many pictures using his Canon Electra 35mm camera. His pictures were all shot during the last half of 1969. The majority of the pictures in this Vietnam pictorial were made by Al. Al has a good eye for photography and a talent for capturing a moment in time and creating pictures that say a lot. Our pictures bring back memories from more than fifty years ago and they mean a lot to us. We like to show them to our friends and family and other Veterans and tell them the stories associated with each one. Since most of the guys who served in Vietnam did not have cameras and therefore have no pictures, we decided to combine our photos to share with them and anyone else that might be interested in that extraordinary period of U.S. military history. The photographs in this book are pictures that you might have taken if you had traveled the roads in the Central Highlands in 1969: You would have taken pictures of villages and towns, Vietnamese people and Montagnard people, lots of children, water buffalo, rice paddies, scenic landscapes, plantations, and farms. You would have taken pictures of all sorts of military vehicles, attack helicopters, airplanes, and portraits of the young American soldiers who were serving there with you. You'd have photographed LZs (landing zones), Artillery Fire Support Bases, and other forward army outposts. On the last six pages, you will find images of actual 1969 military map sheets that show the locations where all of the photographs were made. The images in this pictorial are not organized or grouped according to a subject or to create any sort of theme. Some photos have captions and some do not. There are no lengthy narratives or descriptions or stories told. There are no political opinions or conclusions. Just pictures. One picture, it has been said, is worth a thousand words. If that statement is accurate, the images in this picture book are worth more than 250,000 words.
