Book Escape from the Market

Download or read book Escape from the Market written by Michael Huberman and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1996-09-12 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the outset of the industrial revolution the Lancashire labour market was a model of thoroughgoing competition. Wages adjusted quickly and smoothly to changes in the demand for and supply of labour. Within two generations, however, workers and firms had retreated from the market. Instead of busting wages, firms paid fixed rates; instead of breaking ties on short notice, workers sought longer-term associations. Social norms - doing the right thing - protected and preserved the fresh labour market arrangements. This book explains the causes and effects of changes in the labour market in the context of developments in labour economics and fresh research in social and economic history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monumental study demonstrates the power of culture to define the meaning of labor. Drawing on massive archival evidence from Britain and Germany, as well as historical evidence from France and Italy, The Fabrication of Labor shows how the very nature of labor as a commodity differed fundamentally in different national contexts. A detailed comparative study of German and British wool textile mills reveals a basic difference in the way labor was understood, even though these industries developed in the same period, used similar machines, and competed in similar markets. These divergent definitions of the essential character of labor as a commodity influenced the entire industrial phenomenon, affecting experiences of industrial work, methods of remuneration, disciplinary techniques, forms of collective action, and even industrial architecture. Starting from a rigorous analysis of detailed archival materials, this study broadens out to analyze the contrasting developmental pathways to wage labor in Western Europe and offers a startling reinterpretation of theories of political economy put forward by Adam Smith and Karl Marx. In his brilliant cross-national study, Richard Biernacki profoundly reorients the analysis of how culture constitutes the very categories of economic life. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press’s mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Book Competitive Advantage on the Shop Floor

Download or read book Competitive Advantage on the Shop Floor written by William Lazonick and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1990 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William Lazonick explores how technological change has interacted with the organization of work, with major consequences for national competitiveness and industrial leadership. Looking at Britain, the United States, and Japan from the nineteenth century to the present, he explains changes in their status as industrial superpowers. Lazonick stresses the importance for industrial leadership of cooperative relations between employers and shop-floor workers. Such relations permit employers to use new technologies to their maximum potential, which in turn transforms the high fixed costs inherent in these technologies into low unit costs and large market shares. Cooperative relations can also lead employers to invest in the skills of workers themselves--skills that enable shop-floor workers to influence quality as well as quantity of production. To build cooperative shop-floor relations, successful employers have been willing to pay workers higher wages than they could have secured elsewhere in the economy. They have also been willing to offer workers long-term employment security. These policies, Lazonick argues, have not come at the expense of profits but rather have been a precondition for making profits. Focusing particularly on the role of labor-management relations in fostering "flexible mass production" in Japan since the 1950s, Lazonick criticizes those economists and politicians who, in the face of the Japanese challenge, would rely on free markets alone to restore the international competitiveness of industry in Britain and the United States.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author of this British book states that "The reader must not expect to find, in this historical volume, either an analysis of Trade Union organisation, policy, and methods, or any judgment upon the validity of its assumptions, its economic achievements, or its limitations." The book instead explains how, since the original publication of the book in 1890, the trade union movement has grown to encompass 60% of all workers, and how it may now form the foundation for a new political party.

Book American Management and British Labor

Download or read book American Management and British Labor written by Isaac Cohen and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1990-08-15 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the early American cotton industry through British perspectives. The book covers the period from the 1780s to 1880, and concerns mainly Lancashire and New England, although there are many references to Scotland, Pennsylvania, and New York. By concentrating on the spinning branch of the industry, Cohen is able to contrast different types of technologies, workers, markets, and goods. For instance, the book analyzes how American industrialists acted differently than the British millowners and deals with the response of American factory workers to industrialization as distinct from the British operatives.
