Download or read book Open Skies written by Kenneth I. Kellermann and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-01-01 with total page 652 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book on the history of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory covers the scientific discoveries and technical innovations of late 20th century radio astronomy with particular attention to the people and institutions involved. The authors have made extensive use of the NRAO Archives, which contain an unparalleled collection of documents pertaining to the history of radio astronomy, including the institutional records of NRAO as well as the personal papers of many of the pioneers of U.S. radio astronomy. Technical details and extensive citations to original sources are given in notes for the more technical readers, but are not required for an understanding of the body of the book. This book is intended for an audience ranging from interested lay readers to professional researchers studying the scientific, technical, political, and cultural development of a new science, and how it changed the course of 20th century astronomy.

Download or read book Interferometry in Radioastronomy and Radar Techniques written by R. Wohlleben and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years aperture synthesis and interferometry have become very powerful tools in radioastronomy. Investigation of distant galaxies, for example, have revealed structures with sizes of less than a kiloparsec. In general, the study of galaxies has benefited from the great power of these techniques. Radar applications have also dramatically increased their quality by using the interferometry principle. Tracking and airborne radar can now determine position and velocity of objects with a much higher accuracy. This book describes in the first six, short chapters the basics of interferometry and aperture synthesis. The following two, long chapters treat the aspects of radioastronomical interferometers and radar applications of interferometry in great detail. The text offers readers a very good opportunity to familiarize themselves with the mathematical background of these very complex techniques. For researchers and students in radioastronomy and electrical engineering.
Download or read book Geophysical Geodesy written by Kurt Lambeck and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 766 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geodetic measurements provide high-accuracy observations of the deformation of the Earth on time-scales ranging from a few hours to decades; they constitute an integral part of every study of the planet's dynamic behavior. This book describes geodetic methods and results that are relevant to the study of the Earth, along with the geophysical and geological implications of these observations. The measurement techniques include classical terrestrial observations in use since the late nineteenth century as well as modern methods based on space technology, interferometric observations of radio stars, the tracking of satellites, and laser-ranging to the Moon. Because a complete interpretation of the geodetic observations requires a discussion of Earth physics, geological processes, and meteorological and oceanographic phenomena, this book will be of interest to all geophysicists.
Download or read book Atmospheric Effects in Space Geodesy written by Johannes Böhm and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-12 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Various effects of the atmosphere have to be considered in space geodesy and all of them are described and treated consistently in this textbook. Two chapters are concerned with ionospheric and tropospheric path delays of microwave and optical signals used by space geodetic techniques, such as the Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI), or Satellite Laser Ranging (SLR). It is explained how these effects are best reduced and modelled to improve the accuracy of space geodetic measurements. Other chapters are on the deformation of the Earth’s crust due to atmospheric loading, on atmospheric excitation of Earth rotation, and on atmospheric effects on gravity field measurements from special satellite missions such as CHAMP, GRACE, and GOCE. All chapters have been written by staff members of the Department of Geodesy and Geoinformation at TU Wien who are experts in the particular fields.
