Book Ferroelectrics Literature Index

Download or read book Ferroelectrics Literature Index written by T. F. Connolly and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 713 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research on ferroelectricity and ferroelectric materials started in 1920 with the discovery by Valasek that the variation of spontaneous polarization in Rochelle salt with sign and magnitude of an applied electric field traced a complete and reproducible hysteresis loop. Activity in the field was sporadic until 1935, when Busch and co-workers announced the observation of similar behavior in potassium dihydrogen phosphate and related compounds. Progress thereafter continued at a modest level with the undertaking of some theoretical as well as further experimental studies. In 1944, von Hippel and co-workers discovered ferroelectricity in barium titanate. The technological importance of ceramic barium titanate and other perovskites led to an upsurge of interest, with many new ferroelectrics being identified in the following decade. By 1967, about 2000 papers on various aspects of ferroelectricity had been published. The bulk of this widely dispersed literature was concerned with the experimental measurement of dielectric, crystallographic, thermal, electromechanical, elastic, optical, and magnetic properties. A critical and excellently organized cpmpilation based on these data appeared in 1969 with the publica tion of Landolt-Bornstein, Volume 111/3. This superb tabulation gave instant access to the results in the literature on nearly 450 pure substances and solid solutions of ferroelectric and antiferroelectric materials. Continuing interest in ferroelectrics, spurred by the growing importance of electrooptic crystals, resulted in the publication of almost as many additional papers by the end of 1969 as had been surveyed in Landolt-Bornstein.

Book Raman Spectra of Ice II and Ice IX at 35 K and Atmospheric Pressure

Download or read book Raman Spectra of Ice II and Ice IX at 35 K and Atmospheric Pressure written by Bernard Frederick Francis and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The laser-excited Raman spectra of the 0-H and 0-D stretching and the lattice vibrations of the ordered ices II and IX at 35 K are reported. The temperature dependence to 100 K of the frequencies of the well-defined Raman features, and polarized spectra of near-single crystals of fO and D 2 O ice II are also reported. The laser excitation makes the spectra vastly superior to the mercury arc-excited Raman spectra reported in 1964 by Taylor and Whalley. Many weak peaks and shoulders were observed in addition to the stronger peaks that they reported. The normal coordinate calculations used by Bertie and Bates in 1977 in their interpretation of the infrared spectra of the 0-D stretching vibrations of D 2 O ices II and IX provided a credible interpretation of the Raman spectra. This interpretation was further corroborated by the polarized Raman spectra of ice II and by Raman intensity calculations under the bond polarizability approximation. These observed features are therefore believed to be well understood. The peaks due to the 0-D stretching vibrations are superimposed on a broad feature that is much more intense m the infrared transmission spectra than in the Raman spectrum. It has been argued that the previous interpretation of the intense breadth in the transmission spectrum is not correct and LO-TO splitting has been offered as a more likely explanation The frequencies of the translational vibrations of ices II and IX were calculated under the rigid molecule approxima-tion with simple force fields based on the 0**0 stretching and 0*»O*0 angle deformation coordinates of the lattice, and the absorption and scattering intensities of the normal modes were calculated under the bond moment and bond polarizability approximations. The observed and calculated spectra were sufficiently similar that it was possible to assign in detail nearly all of the features of the observed absorption and scattering spectra of the translational vibrations of ices II and IX. Exploratory work was carried out on the more difficult calculation of both translational and rotational lattice vibrations from the same force field. Several parametrized potential functions were used to describe the restoring forces of the lattice, but none of these could reproduce both the observed isotope ratios and the observed ranges of frequencies of both the translational and rotational vibrations. The potential function that was suggested by dementi et al in 1976 for the potential energy of interaction of a water dimer was used to express the restoring forces as interatomic interactions between nearest-neighbour water molecules of ice II, but the energy of the lattice could not be minimized with the programs used, and therefore imaginary frequencies were calculated. Further work is needed before a suitable force field for the calculation of the translational and rotational vibrations together is found.

Book Ferroelectric Materials and Ferroelectricity

Download or read book Ferroelectric Materials and Ferroelectricity written by T. F. Connolly and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 692 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a joint effort of the Research Materials Information Center (RMIC) of the Solid State Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the Libraries and Information Systems Center at Bell Telephone Laboratories (BTL) Murray Hill, N. J. The Research Materials Information Center has, since 1963, been answering inquiries on the avail ability, preparation, and properties of inorganic solid-state research materials. The preparation of bibliographies has been essential to this function, and the interest in ferroelectrics led to the compila tion of the journal and report literature on that subject. The 1962 book Ferroelectric Crystals, by Jona and Shirane, was taken as a cutoff point, and all papers through mid-1969 received by the Center have been included. The Libraries and Information Systems Center of BTL has, over a period of years, developed a proprie tary package of computer programs called BELDEX, which formats and generates indexes to biblio graphic material. This group therefore undertook to process RMIC's ferroelectric references by BELDEX so that both laboratories could have the benefit of an indexed basic bibliography in this important research area.

Book Metals Superconductors Magnetic Materials Liquids Disordered Solids Optical Properties

Download or read book Metals Superconductors Magnetic Materials Liquids Disordered Solids Optical Properties written by and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 487 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dynamical Properties of Solids, Volume 4: Disordered Solids, Optical Properties focuses on the lattice dynamical properties of noncrystalline and disordered solids and optical properties of crystalline solids. The selection first elaborates on the vibrational properties of amorphous solids and computer experiments and disordered solids. Topics include thermal and electrical transport, density of states, numerical methods, localization, low frequency modes, and theoretical background. The text then takes a look at the morphic effects in lattice dynamics, including normal coordinate formalism, electric-field-induced infrared absorption and Raman scattering, stress-induced changes in the phonon frequencies, and the effect of time reversal on the symmetry of the long-wavelength optical. The manuscript examines the absorption of infrared radiation by multiphonon processes in solids, as well as theoretical studies of infrared absorption in the multiphonon region and experimental studies of infrared absorption at frequencies above the characteristic lattice vibration frequencies. The selection is a dependable source of data for researchers interested in the optical properties of crystalline solids and lattice dynamical properties of noncrystalline and disordered solids.
