Book excerpt: I. F. ecuadorensis - taxonomic treatment. Especially diverse in the Andes, F. ecuadorensis is one of the largest genera of grammitid ferns in the Neotropics. It is represented by 49 species, which grow primarily as epiphytes in tropical forests at high elevations. / II. Melpomene - systematic revision. Twenty-nine neotropical species and 10 varieties are recognized. Occurring at 400-5200m elevation in varied habitats, distribution is Mesoamerica, the Caribbean, and tropical South America, with one disjunction to Africa, Madagascar, and the Mascarenes. / III. Alansmia - taxonomic monograph. Twenty-five species and 2 varieties of this primarily neotropical, epiphytic genus are presented. Occurrence is predominantly in montane forests but also lowland forests and páramos.

Book excerpt: Radiations, or Evolution in Action We have just celebrated the “Darwin Year” with the double anniversary of his 200th birthday and 150th year of his masterpiece, “On the Origin of Species by means of Natural Selection”. In this work, Darwin established the factual evidence of biological evolution, that species change over time, and that new organisms arise by the splitting of ancestral forms into two or more descendant species. However, above all, Darwin provided the mechanisms by arguing convincingly that it is by natural selection – as well as by sexual selection (as he later added) – that organisms adapt to their environment. The many discoveries since then have essentially con?rmed and strengthened Darwin’s central theses, with latest evidence, for example, from molecular genetics, revealing the evolutionary relationships of all life forms through one shared history of descent from a common ancestor. We have also come a long way to progressively understand more on how new species actually originate, i. e. on speciation which remained Darwin’s “mystery of m- teries”, as noted in one of his earliest transmutation notebooks. Since speciation is the underlying mechanism for radiations, it is the ultimate causation for the biological diversity of life that surrounds us.

A particularly important aspect of this book is that in addition to published literature, it relies heavily on unpublished palynological data generated for petroleum companies during the course of hydrocarbon exploration programmes. The main text of the book reviews the evolution of tropical rain forests on a continent by continent basis, culminating with a global synthesis of their history in relation to the changing positions of the world?s tectonic plates and changing climates. This section also establishes the age of the great tropical rain forest blocks and identifies the world?s oldest tropical rain forests. The final chapter compares 20th Century tropical rain forest destruction with prehistoric forest clearance in temperate regions, and looks for analogues of the present phase of destruction within the geological record before considering long term implications of total rain forest destruction.
