Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radiation can only affect matter if absorbed by it. Within the broad range of 300-1000 nm, which we call "the visible", light quanta are energetic enough to produce excited electronic states in the atoms and molecules that absorb them. In these states the molecules may have quite different properties from those in their dormant condition, and reactions that would not otherwise occur become possible. About 80 % of the radiant energy emitted by our sun lies in this fertile band, and so long as the sun's surface temperature is maintained at about 6000° C this state of affairs will continue. This and the transparency of our atmosphere and waters have allowed the generation and evolution of life. Before life began the atmosphere probably also transmitted much of the solar short-wave radiation, but with the rise of vegetation a new product - oxygen - appeared and this, by a photochemical reaction in the upper atmosphere, led to the ozone layer that now protects us from the energetic "short-wave" quanta that once, perhaps, took part in the generation of life-molecules. Light is an ideal sensory stimulus. It travels in straight lines at great speed and, consequently, can be made to form an image from which an animal can make "true", continuous and immediate assessments of present and impending events.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Photochemistry of the Retina: And on Visual Purple Awaiting patiently the future discovery of the exact nature and relations of what may be called the true visual substances, we shall still be justified in maintaining that the visual purple is, if not directly at least indirectly, connected with vision; and, in this sense, I have not hesitated to retain the name 'visual purple, ' in spite of the fact that frogs appear to see perfectly well in spite of the absence of any store of it in their retinas, and that many animals which never at any time seem to possess such a store, have nevertheless very respectable vision; and I trust that an account in the English language of its behaviour and properties will prove not unacceptable to the physiologists and psychologists of this country. • Pages : 292 pages

Download or read book Biochemistry of Vision written by Hitoshi Shichi and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biochemistry of Vision provides information pertinent to vision biochemistry. This book discusses the biochemical information derived primarily from studies on nonocular tissues and describes the biochemical reactions related to the function of the retina and pigmented epithelium. Organized into 16 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the visual system and the structure of the vertebrate eye. The text then proceeds with a discussion of photoreceptor, which has a highly membranous structure. Other chapters cover a brief discussion of several topics, including biomembranes, photochemistry, spectral properties of retinal isomers, and the photochemical properties of the chromophore of rhodopsin. This book discusses as well the properties and intramembrane disposition of rhodopsin. The final chapter deals with the biochemistry of photoreceptor disorders and summarizes the basic knowledge on neurotransmitters and electrophysiology in the retina. This book is intended for ophthalmologists and medical students who are interested in the molecular aspects of photoreceptor diseases.

Book Central Processing of Visual Information A Integrative Functions and Comparative Data

Download or read book Central Processing of Visual Information A Integrative Functions and Comparative Data written by H. Autrum and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 788 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume covers the physiology of the visual system beyond the optic nerve. It is a continuation of the two preceding parts on the photochemistry and the physiology of the eye, and forms a bridge from them to the fourth part on visual psychophysics. These fields have all developed as independent speciali ties and need integrating with each other. The processing of visual information in the brain cannot be understood without some knowledge of the preceding mechanisms in the photoreceptor organs. There are two fundamental reasons, ontogenetic and functional, why this is so: 1) the retina of the vertebrate eye has developed from a specialized part of the brain; 2) in processing their data the eyes follow physiological principles similar to the visual brain centres. Peripheral and central functions should also be discussed in context with their final synthesis in subjective experience, i. e. visual perception. Microphysiology and ultramicroscopy have brought new insights into the neuronal basis of vision. These investigations began in the periphery: HARTLINE'S pioneering experiments on single visual elements of Limulus in 1932 started a successful period of neuronal recordings which ascended from the retina to the highest centres in the visual brain. In the last two decades modern electron microscopic techniques and photochemical investigations of single photoreceptors further contributed to vision research.

Download or read book Photoreceptors written by Alan Fein and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 1982-08-31 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mechanism by which photoreceptor cells in the eyes of higher animals absorb light, giving rise to receptor potentials that initiate the visual process, is a subject of active research in biophysics today. The pace of this research and its multidisciplinary nature have made it difficult for the nonexpert to keep abreast of new discoveries. This book aims to provide a more coherent, compact summary of our knowledge about the field that has been available, serving as an up-to-date introduction to the role of photoreceptors in vision. The book is a self-contained, concise handbook for the reader who has at least a college level knowledge if cell biology, biochemistry, physical chemistry, neurobiology and physics. The authors describe the physical parameters of light and proceed to describe the mechanisms by which photoreceptors extract information about each parameter. The discussion of mechanisms is organized by discipline, following the general sequence of cellular morphology, visual pigment chemistery, and receptor physiology. Photoreceptors: their role in vision is an integrated sourcebook which will serve the novice as a 'stepping stone' to the vast and exciting scientific literature of the field.
