Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Older Forms of Terra-Cotta Roofing Tiles Realizing the imperishable nature of roofing-tiles, and the fact that they are scattered all over the world, it has seemed to me that an inquiry into the various types of terra cotta roofing-tiles and their geographical distribution might be of value. Unfortunately for the American student, the material to be studied is confined to the Old World, and one must go there for the purposes of investigation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Manufacture of Roofing TilesFig. 3 - Robinson's Tile, made at Germantown, Ohio, about 1814.To the right in the picture stands a corner of the new library build ing, upon which can be seen roofing tiles of modern manufacture. A more striking contrast could scarcely have been found, the one tile show ing the marks of time and the primitive methods of manufacture of a century ago, while the other presents a roof of the present day.The Robinson tile at Germantown was probably a sporadic case only, and does not probably stand for the introduction of the industry, as we have no evidence that be manufactured tiles for other than his own needs.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Preservation and Repair of Historic Clay Tile Roofs Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Preservation and Repair of Historic Clay Tile Roofs Classic Reprint written by Anne E. Grimmer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-03 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Preservation and Repair of Historic Clay Tile Roofs Even if the tiles were originally attached with wooden pegs, it is generally recommended that they be rehung with corrosion-resistant, preferably heavy copper, or aluminum alloy nails or hooks. Today there are numerous non-traditional fastening systems for clay tile roofs, and many of them are patented. Roofing contractors and architects may have individual preferences, and some systems may be better suited than others min a particular roof shape or to meet a specific climatic or seismic requirement. Original battens or other roof members that may have deteriorated should be replaced to match the original using pressure-treated wood. Additional support may be necessary, particularly if the original roof was inadequate or poorly designed. Book Architect and Engineer Vol 145

Download or read book Architect and Engineer Vol 145 written by UNKNOWN. AUTHOR and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-11-18 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Architect and Engineer, Vol. 145: April, 1941 Making good profits. Of course, a ways comes first; but next to that there is probab y nothing a venerable business house enioys more than inscribing on its stationery and in its advertising. Established or founded so ano-so. Naming a year which antedates the working days of the present oldest employee. In Europe these complacent retrospects sometimes reach back into the eighteenth century. California is less indulgent to historical pride: our oldest concerns could hardly claim to have been founded before the third quarter of the nineteenth century. But if you consider a generalized industrial activity rather than a specific business entity. Our brick and tile manufacturers might boast that they still prosecute an enterprise which was founded many thousands of years b.c. In fact. It is far and away the oldest line of fabricated building material on the market. Mankind has habitually used for building what came most readily to hand. Forested regions prompted timber architectures: regions with available stone developed stone architec tures: and these materials required only dressing and forming for use. In those regions where nothing came to hand in its natural state. There was always the earth itself; but it necessitated some sort of fabrication. The remotest times of which evidence exists utilized the earth in three fabricated forms - and the order is doubtless that of actual chrono ogical development - (i) sun-dried bricks; (2) burned bricks and tiles: (3) burned bricks and tiles with surface glazes Advancing down the road toward historic times. We encounter another form of burned earth. Namely. (4) modeled terra cotta. Both unglazed and glazed. Then the material was fashioned into overlapping units for (5) roofing tiles. These same five forms persist to the present day but with a difference. From prehistoric times down to the last quarter century they went their steady but uneventful way: in one time and place more skilled craftsmanship would emerge in another greater artistic insight; but in principe they remained substantially unchanged. For a time it even looked as if the oldest building material was to be passed unnoticed by the unprecedented expansion of technical resources which began to transform building along the latter part of the nineteenth century. But here also mechanica ingenuity began to intro duce new mechanical processes. And in less than a quarter century the clay products industry has made technical advances which, predicted even in our own youth. Would have been dismissed as fantastic. Book Ancient Building in Cyprus

Download or read book Ancient Building in Cyprus written by George R. H. Wright and published by BRILL. This book was released on 1992 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The wealth of excavation in Cyprus conducted across a period of nearly a century and a half has revealed much evidence of ancient building of all functional categories. This picture extends over a vast range of time (ca. 10,000 years) since Cyprus is probably the place where the earliest substantial building known, the Neolithic round house style is better presented than anywhere else in the world. It is the aim of this book to set forth and document the building tradition which hitherto has received no detailed exposition. The book will fill several gaps in the library shelves at one and the same time: architectural history that presents all the archaeological evidence.

Book Ancient Terracottas from South Italy and Sicily in the J Paul Getty Museum

Download or read book Ancient Terracottas from South Italy and Sicily in the J Paul Getty Museum written by Maria Lucia Ferruzza and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2016-01-25 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the ancient world, terracotta sculpture was ubiquitous. Readily available and economical—unlike stone suitable for carving—clay allowed artisans to craft figures of remarkable variety and expressiveness. Terracottas from South Italy and Sicily attest to the prolific coroplastic workshops that supplied sacred and decorative images for sanctuaries, settlements, and cemeteries. Sixty terracottas are investigated here by noted scholar Maria Lucia Ferruzza, comprising a selection of significant types from the Getty’s larger collection—life-size sculptures, statuettes, heads and busts, altars, and decorative appliqués. In addition to the comprehensive catalogue entries, the publication includes a guide to the full collection of over one thousand other figurines and molds from the region by Getty curator of antiquities Claire L. Lyons. Reflecting the Getty's commitment to open content, Ancient Terracottas from South Italy and Sicily in the J. Paul Getty Museum is available online at www.getty.edu/publications/terracottas and may be downloaded for free.
