Book excerpt: Summary: Approximate formulas for the computation of the momentum thicknesses of turbulent boundary layers on two-dimensional bodies, on bodies of revolution at zero angle of attack, and on the inner surfaces of round channels all in compressible flow are given in the form of integrals that can be conveniently computed. The formulas involve the assumptions that the momentum thickness may be computed by use of a boundary-layer velocity profile which is fixed and that skin-friction formulas for flat plates may be used in the computation of boundary-layer thicknesses in flow with pressure gradients. The effect of density changes on the ration of the displacement thickness to the momentum thickness of the boundary layer is taken into account. Use is made of the experimental finding that the skin-friction coefficient for turbulent flow is independent of Mach number. The computations indicated that the effect of density changes on the momentum thickness in flows with pressure gradients is small for subsonic flows.

Book excerpt: The velocity, energy and concentration fields of three-dimensional viscous wakes are examined with the boundary layer approximations and Oseens' linearization of the acceleration terms. Solutions are derived for both incompressible and compressible wakes, without and with axial pressure gradients. In the incompressible cases the governing equations are linear and transform methods yield exact solutions for general types of initial conditions. In the compressible case the energy equation admits a Crocco integral when the Prandtl and Lewis numbers are equal to unity, and a similar integral of the concentration equation is derived for Le/Pr=1 and Wi tends toward 0. However, due to the nonlinearities associated with compressible flows, solutions for the velocity components can only be achieved by approximate methods. Two methods are presented; the first involves an iteration scheme, while the second assumes that the density and viscosity are only a function of the axial coordinate. In both methods transform theory is used and solutions are presented for general types of initial conditions. As an illustration, it is demonstrated that the axial velocity distribution in isobaric wakes whose initial isovels (lines of constant velocity) are of elliptic shape decay to axial symmetry. Book excerpt: The application of the well-known basic principle of mechanics, the principle of Jourdain, to problems of the theory of the boundary layer leads to an equation from which the equations of Von Karman, Leibenson, and Golubev are derived as special cases. The given equation may be employed in other integral methods. The present paper deals with the method of the variation of the thickness of the boundary layer. A number of new approximate formulas valuable in aerodynamic calculations for the fristion distribution are derived from this procedure. The method has been applied only to laminar boundary layers, but it seems probable that it may be generalized to include turbulent layers as well.
