Book excerpt: The feasibility of the determination of polarization distributions over radio sources by variable spacing interference polarimetry was tested. The results of preliminary measurements for eight strong sources are presented. The polarized region in the Crab Nebula at 10.6-cm wavelength is roughly one-half the diameter of the unpolarized source. Both components of the central source in Centaurus A are found to be linearly polarized, but with their planes of polarization at 44 degrees to each other. The observations on five other double sources, 3C 270, Pictor A, Hercules A, 3C 353 and Cygnus A show evidence of two or more polarized regions on each source with different preferred directions. M87, the galaxy with the optically polarized 'jet', seems to have a polarized halo at 21 cm whereas earlier measurements at the same wavelength had indicated that the core was essentially unpolarized. No strong connection is found between the degree of polarization at 10 cm and other source parameters. The ratio P(21)/P(10) between the degrees of polarization at 21 cm and 10 cm has been used as a measure for the depolarization rate. The distribution ordinates indicates that most of the depolarization occurs outside our galaxy. No strong correlation is evident in a comparison of P(21)/P(10) with other source parameters. Possible explanations of the change in degree of polarization with wavelength are briefly discussed. (Author).

Both right-ascension and declination scans are presented. Distributions of depolarization, rotation measure, and intrinsic polarization angle are calculated. Variations of spectral index within sources are noted. The magnetic field near the center of many radio galaxies is perpendicular to the major axis; in the outer components it is either approximately perpendicular or parallel. Correlations are found between rotation measure and depolarization rate in some cases. (Author).
