Book On the Theory of the Reflection and Refraction of Light

Download or read book On the Theory of the Reflection and Refraction of Light written by Hendrik Antoon Lorentz and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 1997 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1997 - the centennial year of the electron - provides a good occasion to publish the first English translation ever made of H.A. Lorentz's doctoral dissertation of 1875. Just 22 years old, Lorentz took up and handled magisterially one major unresolved problem of Maxwell's electromagnetic theory, the reflection and refraction of light. By then the superiority of Maxwell's electromagnetic ether theory over current elastic solid conceptions such as Fresnel's was not nearly a settled issue. In his dissertation, Lorentz strove with considerable success to make it that. Still, he found that neither theory allowed for a satisfactory account of dispersion. One intriguing aspect of Lorentz's earliest scientific achievement (which within two years was to earn him the chair of theoretical physics at Leyden University) is that a range of subjects soon to occupy him for the rest of his life are already clearly foreshadowed in it. So far, Lorentz's first step in science has existed only in the original Dutch, and in a French translation made long ago as part of the Collected Works. Here, the joint translators have striven to provide a fluently readable, full text while preserving the flavor of Lorentz' original language and style.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "No one interested in the history of optics, the history of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century physics, or the general phenomenon of theory change in science can afford to ignore Jed Buchwald's well-structured, highly detailed, and scrupulously researched book. . . . Buchwald's analysis will surely constitute the essential starting point for further work on this important and hitherto relatively neglected episode of theory change."—John Worrall, Isis

Book Fundamentals of Polarized Light

Download or read book Fundamentals of Polarized Light written by Christian Brosseau and published by Wiley-Interscience. This book was released on 1998-10-15 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comprehensive coverage of light polarization theory and its practical applications in today's cutting-edge technologies Besides being indispensable to modern investigations into the physical world, light polarization is a fundamental component of several revolutionary technological innovations in such diverse fields as telecommunications, pollution control, and medical diagnostics. Yet there is a conspicuous dearth of texts and professional references providing researchers and engineers with a unified, comprehensive treatment of basic light polarization theory and its applications to current microwave and optical technology. This book fills that gap in the literature. Fundamentals of Polarized Light serves equally well as an advanced text for physics and electrical engineering students and a professional reference for practicing engineers and researchers. It combines a rational, integrated presentation of the theory behind modern applications of light polarization with several demonstrations of current applications. A key feature of the book is that the analysis of polarized light and its interaction with linear optical media is presented from a statistical point of view. Topics covered include: * Historical foundations of polarized light * Classical radiation field theory and Maxwell's equations * Statistical theory of partial polarization, including a discussion of the thermodynamics of radiation fields * Propagation of polarized light through linear optical systems * Polarization transfer matrix methods for describing changes in polarization states that occur during reflection and refraction * Propagation of partially polarized waves in disordered systems and anisotropic media * Polarizers, compensators, and other optical components * Measurements of the Jones and Mueller polarization matrices

Book Characterization of Partially Polarized Light Fields

Download or read book Characterization of Partially Polarized Light Fields written by Rosario Martínez-Herrero and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-07-21 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polarization involves the vectorial nature of light fields. In current applications of optical science, the electromagnetic description of light with its vector features has been shown to be essential: In practice, optical radiation also exhibits randomness and spatial non-uniformity of the polarization state. Moreover, propagation through photonic devices can alter the correlation properties of the light field, resulting in changes in polarization. All these vectorial properties have been gaining importance in recent years, and they are attracting increasing attention in the literature. This is the framework and the scope of the present book, which includes the authors’ own contributions to these issues.
