Book excerpt: Futures exchanges are in constant search of futures contracts that will generate a profitable level of trading volume. In this context, it would be interesting to determine what effect the introduction of new futures contracts have on the trading volume of the contracts already listed. The introduction of new futures contracts may lead to a volume increase for those contracts already listed and hence, contribute to the success of a futures exchange. On the other hand, the introduction of new futures contracts could lead to a volume decrease for the contracts already listed, thereby undermining the success of the futures exchange accordingly. Using a multi-product hedging model in which the perspective has been shifted from portfolio to exchange management, we study these effects. Using data from two exchanges that are different regarding market liquidity (Amsterdam Exchanges versus Chicago Board of Trade) we show the usefulness of the proposed tool. Our findings have several important implications for a futures exchange's innovation policy.

Book excerpt: A model of futures contract innovation incorporates hedging with liquidity costs by imposing sequential and uncertain entry of hedgers with markets clearing after each entry. Hedgers have mean-variance preferences and rational expectations about their opportunities to trade upon future entry. It is shown that the optimal contract chosen by a volume-maximizing monopolistic exchange is one which perfectly correlates with the endowment differential of hedgers. Further, the exchange may choose not to offer closely correlated contracts when liquidity is sufficiently low. Next, a simple Lucas-type model of an infinitely-lived barter economy is generalized to allow for storability of goods with the goal of examining the time-series properties of prices. The model is solved numerically and fitted to futures time-series data using methods of moments. Its implications for other moments of interest are tested with the null hypothesis that if the model is correctly specified these additional moments should be close to those of the actual data. It is found that models where all goods are storable generally outperform a model where only one of the goods is storable. While the storage model can generate price series which display high levels of autocorrelation and a degree of conditional heteroskedasticity, overall the specified null hypothesis is rejected by the data.

How actors assess uncertainty is a problem that economists have tried to solve through general equilibrium and rational expectations theory. Powerful as these analytical tools are, they underestimate the future’s unknowability by assuming that markets, in the aggregate, correctly forecast what is to come. Jens Beckert adds a new chapter to the theory of capitalism by demonstrating how fictional expectations drive modern economies—or throw them into crisis when the imagined futures fail to materialize. Collectively held images of how the future will unfold are critical because they free economic actors from paralyzing doubt, enabling them to commit resources and coordinate decisions even if those expectations prove inaccurate. Beckert distinguishes fictional expectations from performativity theory, which holds that predictions tend to become self-fulfilling prophecies. Economic forecasts are important not because they produce the futures they envision but because they create the expectations that generate economic activity in the first place. Actors pursue money, investments, innovations, and consumption only if they believe the objects obtained through market exchanges will retain value. We accept money because we believe in its future purchasing power. We accept the risk of capital investments and innovation because we expect profit. And we purchase consumer goods based on dreams of satisfaction.
