Book On the Habits and Instincts of Animals

Download or read book On the Habits and Instincts of Animals written by William Swainson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-14 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Habits and Instincts of Animals So far, then, and considered as merely a general definition, or rather description, of instinct, this opinion is perfectly satisfactory; but it does not reach all the various bearings of this complicated subject. When we find some animals not only impelled to perform certain necessary functions in a regular and unvarying manner, - one generation following another in exactly the same track, and supplying their different wants in precisely the same manner, - but also that many others actually vary in what should seem to be the universal ordination of nature, and, as if in obedience to the deductions of reason, accurately adapting their plans to their circumstances, and their measures to those unexpected changes which accident may have wrought in their situation, - with these facts upon record, we feel it is not surprising that some who have written on the subject have gone a step further. They have, in fact, sought to solve the question, by admitting that, besides the faculty of instinct, animals may, in an inferior degree, also possess that of reason. But this admission brings with it fresh difficulties. If once we follow the least degree of reason to the brute creation, we must concede a portion of it altogether incompatible with their situation. We must admit that the bee, for instance, is guided in her wonderful operations, by an acquaintance with those principles of science, which man has required time and reflection to discover. We must, in short, acknowledge her both a geometrician and a philosopher; and endue her with a perception of causes and effects, inconsistent with the other habits and appearances of the creature, absolutely derogatory to the superior nature of man. Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • This instant classic explores how we can change our lives by changing our habits. NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY The Wall Street Journal • Financial Times In The Power of Habit, award-winning business reporter Charles Duhigg takes us to the thrilling edge of scientific discoveries that explain why habits exist and how they can be changed. Book excerpt: To the pleasing task of enlightening those, who, shut up in close cities, have no opportunity of observing for themselves, and to the still higher enjoyment of directing young minds to an elevating pursuit, the naturalist adds a gratification even better than all, by making known the hidden wonders of nature; and leaving to those who delight in argument, the ever unsolved question of where instinct ends and reason begins, he sets forth the love of the great Creator towards all His creatures, and the ways He takes to show His wisdom.

Book The Willpower Instinct

Download or read book The Willpower Instinct written by Kelly McGonigal and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2013-12-31 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on Stanford University psychologist Kelly McGonigal's wildly popular course "The Science of Willpower," The Willpower Instinct is the first book to explain the science of self-control and how it can be harnessed to improve our health, happiness, and productivity. Informed by the latest research and combining cutting-edge insights from psychology, economics, neuroscience, and medicine, The Willpower Instinct explains exactly what willpower is, how it works, and why it matters. For example, readers will learn: • Willpower is a mind-body response, not a virtue. It is a biological function that can be improved through mindfulness, exercise, nutrition, and sleep. • Willpower is not an unlimited resource. Too much self-control can actually be bad for your health. • Temptation and stress hijack the brain's systems of self-control, but the brain can be trained for greater willpower • Guilt and shame over your setbacks lead to giving in again, but self-forgiveness and self-compassion boost self-control. • Giving up control is sometimes the only way to gain self-control. • Willpower failures are contagious—you can catch the desire to overspend or overeat from your friends—but you can also catch self-control from the right role models. In the groundbreaking tradition of Getting Things Done, The Willpower Instinct combines life-changing prescriptive advice and complementary exercises to help readers with goals ranging from losing weight to more patient parenting, less procrastination, better health, and greater productivity at work.
