Book excerpt: The search for an elusive plant-species required for his research took the author to North East India and various islands in the Andaman and Nicobar archipelago, some of them with restricted entry. Travelling across North East India can be both exciting and challenging. The verdant landscapes and the cultural diversity captivate visitors to no end while the lack of communication facilities and insurgency could be a real challenge to those travelling in the region. On the Grass Trail takes you on an exciting journey across the high mountains, valleys and river-plains of the North Eastern states of Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh while providing insights into the historical, cultural and socio-political background of the region. The travails of the author’s journey to the remotest parts of North East India, overcoming adversities and uncertainties, will keep the reader engrossed and riveted to the narrative. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands have an irresistible charm that beckons travellers from across the world. The firsthand account on the exquisite charm of the islands, its chequered past, the life and struggle of the islanders, the status of native tribes and their uncertain future make this book a compelling read.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In thirty-six thrilling days, Melanie Radzicki McManus hiked 1,100 miles around Wisconsin, landing her in the elite group of Ice Age Trail thru-hikers known as the Thousand-Milers. In prose that’s alternately harrowing and humorous, Thousand-Miler takes you with her through Wisconsin’s forests, prairies, wetlands, and farms, past the geologic wonders carved by long-ago glaciers, and into the neighborhood bars and gathering places of far-flung small towns. Follow along as she worries about wildlife encounters, wonders if her injured feet will ever recover, and searches for an elusive fellow hiker known as Papa Bear. Woven throughout her account are details of the history of the still-developing Ice Age Trail—one of just eleven National Scenic Trails—and helpful insight and strategies for undertaking a successful thru-hike. In addition to chronicling McManus’s hike, Thousand-Miler also includes the little-told story of the Ice Age Trail’s first-ever thru-hiker Jim Staudacher, an account of the record-breaking thru-run of ultrarunner Jason Dorgan, the experiences of a young combat veteran who embarked on her thru-hike as a way to ease back into civilian life, and other fascinating tales from the trail. Their collective experiences shed light on the motivations of thru-hikers and the different ways hikers accomplish this impressive feat, providing an entertaining and informative read for outdoors enthusiasts of all levels.

Book The LH7 Ranch in Houston s Shadow

Download or read book The LH7 Ranch in Houston s Shadow written by Deborah Lightfoot Sizemore and published by . This book was released on 1991-12 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of Emil Henry Marks and the LH7 Ranch he founded records not only the history of a unique family but also tells something of the cattle business on the coastal prairies of Texas when ranching was the principal industry of the region, before Houston became a major metropolitan center and industry became king. It also chronicles the beginning of the Salt Grass Trail, one of Houston's most enduring traditions. Marks registered the LH7 brand in Harris County in 1898 and started the ranch with 63 acres of grass west of Houston and a few Longhorn cattle. By the early 1930s the LH7 was running 6,670 head on 36,000 acres. The city's shadow loomed over the LH7 in the 1940s and 1950s, and eventually a big bite of the ranch was condemned to protect booming Houston from flooding along Buffalo Bayou. At age seventy, Marks made the first Salt Grass Trail ride in January, 1952, which is reenacted each February to kick off the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.
