Book The Species and Composition of Dilute Alkali Metal ammonia Solutions i

Download or read book The Species and Composition of Dilute Alkali Metal ammonia Solutions i written by Sidney Golden and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dilute solutions of the alkali metals in liquid ammonia are assumed to consist of the following constituents: M(+), the solvated metal cation; S, the solvent; M( - ), the solvated metal anion; S( - ), the solvent anion (solvated electron); the solvated ion-pairs M(+). M( - ) and M(+). S( - ). The presence of the solvated metal anion M( - ) is justified on the basis of the observed existence of stable alkali metal anions in the gas phase. The absence of solvated metal M, usually assumed to be a constituent of these solutions, is justified in part by a thermodynamic estimate of its instability with respect to disproportionation to yield the solvated cation and solvated anion of the metal; the optical and electrical properties of condensed layers of mixtures of ammonia and the alkali metals at very low temperatures favor this view. The solvated solvent anion S( - ) is favored as a model for the solvated electron on the basis of Knight shift data for the spin density on N-14, which is extremely close in value to that of sodium, with which ammonia is isoelectronic. These species are assumed to be in equilibrium via M(+) + 2S( - ) = M( - ) + 2S and M(+) + A( - ) = M(+) . A( - ), where A( - ) is either M( - ) or S( - ). For simplicity, the activity coefficient of each species is assumed to be given by the extended theory of Debye and Huckel, with a fixed value of 5.5A for the interionic size parameter. (Author).

Book On the Composition of Dilute Alkali Metalammonia Solutions

Download or read book On the Composition of Dilute Alkali Metalammonia Solutions written by Sidney Golden and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dilute solutions of the alkali metals in liquid ammonia are assumed to consist of the following constituents: M+, the solvated metal cation; S, the solvent; M-, the solvated metal anion; S-, the solvent anion (solvated electron); the ion-pairs M+.M- and M+.S-. These species are assumed to be in equilibrium via M+ + 2S- reversibly yields M- + 2S and M+ + A- reversibly yields M+.A-, where A- is either M- or S-. With generally good results being obtained, the foregoing model has been applied to account for the following properties of alkali metal-ammonia solutions which are more dilute than about 0.10 M: (1) the spin paramagnetic susceptibilities reported by Hutchison and Pastor; (2) the vapor-pressure depression results of Kraus; (3) the electrical conductances measured by Kraus and the temperature coefficients of conductance, reported by Gibson and Phipps; (4) the Knight shifts for N14 and Na23, reported by McConnell and Holm, Acrivos and Pitzer and O'Reilly; (5) the optical absorption results of Gold and Jolly, and those of Dye and Douthit. An a postiori argument supports the neglect of ion-triples for the solutions which have been considered, and reinforces a distinction to be made between the metal anion Na- and the analogous ion-triple S-. Book Metal Ammonia Solutions

Download or read book Metal Ammonia Solutions written by Sam Stuart and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 523 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metal-Ammonia Solutions contains the proceedings of an International Conference on the Nature of Metal-Ammonia Solutions Colloque Weyl II held at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, on June 15-19, 1969. The papers explore the nature of metal-ammonia solutions and cover topics ranging from the dilemma of metal-ammonia models to the magnetic properties of metal-ammonia solutions, the reactions of such solutions, and solid metal-ammonia compounds. This monograph is comprised of 39 chapters and begins with an overview of models for the concentration dependence of the properties of dilute metal-ammonia solutions. The discussion then turns to a continuous dielectric model for the solvated dielectron in dielectric media; elementary electronic excitations in insulating liquids; and magnetic properties of metal-ammonia solutions. The chapters that follow focus on the kinetics of the reaction between sodium and ethanol in liquid ammonia; electrons trapped in solids; metal-nonmetal transition and phase separation; and optical spectra of alkali metal-ammonia solutions. This text will be a valuable resource for chemists and chemistry students.

Download or read book Heats of Solution of Alkali Metals in Ammonia written by Thomas R Tuttle (Jr) and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The heats of solution of sodium and potassium in liquid ammonia are examined in terms of the redox model which has been proposed for the composition of these solutions. The heats of solution are shown to vary in an essentially linear manner with the spin paramagnetic susceptibility of the solutions, as expected from the model. Analysis of the data yields enthalpy changes for the redox equilibrium M(+) + 2S( - ) reversibly yields M( - ) + 2S, which are in reasonably good agreement with those obtained from the temperature variation of spin paramagnetic susceptibility. A temperature-dependent enthalpy is indicated for the redox equilibrium. (Author).
