Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Collection of Zoological Specimens for the Victoria Memorial Museum: Zoology The most profitable course for a beginner under such conditions. Is to endeavour to collect specimens of every thing that comes under his notice. Beginning with the commonest. The mere fact of locality gives most things zoological an enhanced value. Many species vary under the geographical influence of their distribution. Sometimes broadly. Sometimes so minutely that it takes the closest study to detect the differentiation. The form in evidence may or may not be identical with others from a well studied locality. But in either cm they are valuable. As the demonstration of a lack of variation in a locality is of as much scientific importance as that of its occurrence. Book Specimens

Download or read book Specimens written by Roger J. Lincoln and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Get ready for an encounter with one of the world's most extraordinary collections, captured in an array of startling photographs. Astonishing to look at, the massed ranks of jars and tanks in all shapes and sizes with their fascinating, sometimes shocking, contents are the fruit of centuries of scientific exploration to all parts of the globe. But more than that, these long dead animals are actually helping improve the chances of survival for their modern descendants. The images of the plants and animals vary from a Komodo Dragon to plankton, snakes to brittle stars. Zoologists Roger Lincoln and Phil Rainbow give a lively insight to the specimens, explaining the details of preservation and highlighting how much of our planet's biodiversity still awaits recognition and taxonomic description. They show why this collection is used by scientists from all around the world, and reveal just why it is so vital to modern science and the study of biodiversity.

Book excerpt: Mobile Museums presents an argument for the importance of circulation in the study of museum collections, past and present. It brings together an impressive array of international scholars and curators from a wide variety of disciplines – including the history of science, museum anthropology and postcolonial history - to consider the mobility of collections. The book combines historical perspectives on the circulation of museum objects in the past with contemporary accounts of their re-mobilisation, notably in the context of Indigenous community engagement. Contributors seek to explore processes of circulation historically in order to re-examine, inform and unsettle common assumptions about the way museum collections have evolved over time and through space. By foregrounding questions of circulation, the chapters in Mobile Museums collectively represent a fundamental shift in the understanding of the history and future uses of museum collections. The book addresses a variety of different types of collection, including the botanical, the ethnographic, the economic and the archaeological. Its perspective is truly global, with case studies drawn from South America, West Africa, Oceania, Australia, the United States, Europe and the UK. Mobile Museums helps us to understand why the mobility of museum collections was a fundamental aspect of their history and why it continues to matter today. Praise for Mobile Museums 'This book advances a paradigm shift in studies of museums and collections. A distinguished group of contributors reveal that collections are not dead assemblages. The nineteenth and twentieth centuries were marked by vigorous international traffic in ethnography and natural history specimens that tell us much about colonialism, travel and the history of knowledge – and have implications for the remobilisation of museums in the future.’ – Nicholas Thomas, University of Cambridge 'The first major work to examine the implications and consequences of the migration of materials from one scientific or cultural milieu to another, it highlights the need for a more nuanced understanding of collections and offers insights into their potential for future re-mobilisation.' – Arthur MacGregor

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This conference represents the first time in my life when I felt it was a misfor tune, rather than a major cause of my happiness, that I do conservation work in New Guinea. Yes, it is true that New Guinea is a fascinating microcosm, it has fascinating birds and people, and it has large expanses of undisturbed rainforest. In the course of my work there, helping the Indonesian government and World Wildlife Fund set up a comprehensive national park system, I have been able to study animals in areas without any human population. But New Guinea has one serious drawback: it has no primates, except for humans. Thus, I come to this conference on primate conservation as an underprivileged and emotionally deprived observer, rather than as an involved participant. Nevertheless, it is easy for anyone to become interested in primate conserva tion. The public cares about primates. More specifically, to state things more realistically, many people care some of the time about some primates. Primates are rivaled only by birds, pandas, and the big cats in their public appeal. For some other groups of animals, the best we can say is that few people care about them, infrequently. For most groups of animals, no one cares about them, ever.

Book The Animal Rights Struggle

Download or read book The Animal Rights Struggle written by Christophe Traïni and published by Protest and Social Movements. This book was released on 2016 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the beginning of the 19th century to the present day, a host of campaigners have denounced the mistreatment of animals. Relying on a comparison of the British and French experiences, this book retraces the various strands of the animal protection movement, from their origins to their continuing impact on current debates. The story of the collective mobilizations behind the struggle for animal rights sheds light on several crucial processes in our social and political history: changes in sensibilities and socially approved emotions; the definition of what constitutes legitimate violence; the establishment of norms designed to change what constitutes morally acceptable practices; rivalry between elites having differing conceptions of the forms authority should take; the influence of religious belief on militant activities; and the effects of gender discrimination.--
