Book Highway of Dreams

Download or read book Highway of Dreams written by A. Michael Noll and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-26 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important volume reviews the history of the telecommunication superhighway pointing out its beginnings in the interactive TV and broadband highway of the wired cities more than two decades ago. It explains the technological uncertainties of the superhighway and many of its futuristic services, and also gives an understandable review of the technological principles behind today's modern telecommunication networks and systems. Recognizing that technology is only one factor in shaping the future, the author, a well-recognized telecommunications expert, analyzes the financial, policy, business, and consumer issues that undermine the superhighway. The book concludes by showing that today's switched telephone network and CATV systems already form a telecommunication superhighway carrying voice, data, image, and video communication for a wide variety of services that enable us to stay in contact with anyone anywhere on our planet. Highway of Dreams is written clearly with understandable explanations for nonspecialists. It challenges the technological utopia offered by the promoters of the superhighway and suggests that consumer needs, finance, corporate culture, and policy often have far greater impact on the future than technology alone.

Book Retransmission and U S Compliance with TRIPs

Download or read book Retransmission and U S Compliance with TRIPs written by David J. Brennan and published by Kluwer Law International B.V.. This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book seeks to answer one central question: do the U.S. cable and satellite retransmission statutory licenses comply with the TRIPs minimum standard? As with all legal problems, the resolution of ambiguity provides the challenge and the interest. In this regard, by far the greatest ambiguity is created by the use of the term 'equitable renumeration' in the TRIPs retransmission norm. Resort will be had to not only the drafting history of the TRIPs incorporated Berne Convention article, but also to the discipline of economics and to the field of restitutionary monetary awards in common law countries, to seek to provide a meaning for that term. This book is unique in so far as it purports to undertake to provide an analysis whereby a TRIPs compliance issue is considered fully at a theoretical level in an attempt to provide an answer. In so doing, it is hoped that the analysis will provide a methodology for the consideration of the compliance of national laws with intellectual property treaty obligations, which is of use to anyone who may wish to consider such compliance issues in the future.

Book Electronic Technology Corporate Strategy and World Transformation

Download or read book Electronic Technology Corporate Strategy and World Transformation written by Maurice Estabrooks and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1995-05-23 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How are the new electronic technologies transforming business here and abroad — indeed, the entire world economy — and what new strategies must business develop to meet the challenges of this transformation? Economist, writer, and communications executive Maurice Estabrooks provides a readable, comprehensive survey of how businesses are using microchips, computers, and telecommunications to reshape the entire world of work — its cultures, organization, and economic systems. With insight and impeccable scholarship he provides concrete evidence of the emergence of artificially intelligent, cybernetic, network-based entities that are creating new linkages between businesses, markets, and technology itself — linkages that will profoundly affect the way businesses create and implement their corporate survival and growth strategies in the future. Drawing on the work of economic theorist Joseph Schumpeter, Estabrooks shows how Schumpeterian dynamics have played a key role in the breakup of AT&T and the Bell System, and in the deregulation of telecommunications, broadcasting, banking, finance, and other economically critical industries. What has emerged, he maintains, is an increasingly integrated, global information- and software-based services economy. Optical fibers, satellites, and wireless communications systems have already made possible the development of electronic superhighways, but in doing so they have also initiated a massive redistribution of economic power and wealth throughout the world, the implications of which are only now being understood. Historical, analytical, descriptive, Estabrooks' book will speak not only to academics and others who observe world transformations from relatively theoretical perspectives, but also to corporate and other executives whose organizations, and certainly their personal work lives, will be changed dramatically by the developments he describes in practical day-to-day situations.

Book And Communications for All

Download or read book And Communications for All written by Amit M. Schejter and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2009-02-16 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In . . . And Communications for All, 16 leading communications policy scholars present a comprehensive telecommunications policy agenda for the new federal administration. This agenda emphasizes the potential of information technologies to improve democratic discourse, social responsibility, and the quality of life along with the means by which it can be made available to all Americans. Schejter has assembled an analysis of the reasons for the failure of the Telecommunications Act of 1996, and offers an international benchmark for the future of telecommunications. Addressing a range of topics, including network neutrality, rural connectivity, media ownership, minority ownership, spectrum policy, universal broadband policy, and media for children, it articulates a comprehensive vision for the United States as a twenty-first-century information society that is both internally inclusive and globally competitive.

Book Intellectual Property

Download or read book Intellectual Property written by Paul Goldstein and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2007 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No idea is entirely original; every innovative business borrows, sometimes extensively, from its competitors and others. So how do we draw the line between fair and unfair use? Billions of pounds ride on that question, as do the fates of publishers, software producers, advertising firms, and many others. With the growth of the internet and global markets, having a smart IP strategy is essential. This is the ideal book for non-lawyers who deal with patents, trade secrets, trademarks, and copyrights; managers need to navigate these murky waters, and this book shows how.

Book Modern Telecommunication

Download or read book Modern Telecommunication written by E. Bryan Carne and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organized society depends on communication of all kinds, including the ability to communicate at a distance, instantaneously. With the development of solid state electronics and its application to digital processing, telecommunication has become extremely important to large segments of American business. The in troduction of competition to serve these voice, data, and video needs has ex panded the number of service options available, and some of them are finding their way into the residential sector. From a relatively stable, mature industry, telecommunication has rapidly become a technology-driven marketplace in which a host of companies are competing for customer attention with new services and equipment. Heretofore, books on telecommunications have addressed facilities and how they work. In this book, I am seeking to provide a much broader perspective which includes information on the motives driving the business itself, on new media and services, and on advancing technologies, as well as on digital facilities and their integration into the environment of future businesses and households. Covering so wide a set of topics presents many problems, not the least of which is that the character of the information is different in each chapter, and the material will be read by persons skilled in disparate fields. It is possible to read each chapter by itself-although a reading of all of them is needed to understand the new dimensions being introduced into the telecommunication experience.
