Book excerpt: Damage initiation and accumulation has been monitored through acoustic emission (AE) in several center-notched unidirectional metal matrix composites (MMC) and multidirectional boron/aluminum (B/A1) laminates subjected to uniaxial quasi-static tensile loading. Emphasis has been placed on establishing the correlation between the actual damage initiation and growth and AE results. The correspondence between failure processes in the different material systems and the event intensities was investigated, and the results on the event amplitudes are reported. Effect of heat treatment on the failure process and on the associated emission in unidirectional and quasi-isotropic B/Al laminates has also been studied. Notch-tip damage growth was monitored in real-time through optical observations, and effective notch-tip damage extension was determined by applying the compliance matching procedure. Fracture surface morphology was examined via the scanning electron microscope. It is shown that the failure processes in the different material systems can be correlated with the AE event amplitudes. The results indicate that an excellent correlation can be established between the rate of damage growth and the AE results. Thus, it is concluded that AE technique can monitor damage formation and accumulation in MMC in real-time.

In the first, individual, analysis, acoustic signature of each damage mechanism is characterized. So with a clustering method, AE signals that have similar shapes or similar features can be group together into a cluster. Afterwards, each cluster can be linked with a main damage. The second analysis is based on a global AE analysis, on the investigation of liberated energy, with a view to identify a critical point. So beyond this characteristic point, the criticality can be modeled with a power-law in order to evaluate time to failure.

A lot of tests with different CFRP specimens make sure that there are correlations between certain AE parameters, respectively their variation, and characteristics of defects, which are typical for composites. The damage history of the test specimens can be analyzed with a very good chronological resolution. This includes an exact correlation between acoustic and mechanical parameters, such as load, cycle number etc. The present results demonstrate a potential for distinguishing between some dominant failure mechanisms, as fiber failure and matrix cracking, and noise generated by internal friction. Locating existing defects and tracking spatial damage progression is another field of application. All AE data are being monitored continuously in situ- during loading the specimen. Post-test-analysis of the stored data with suited computer programs enables a more sophisticated evaluation.
