Nietzsche, considerably more than most philosophers, has permeated Western popular culture to the extent that his name entails specific, negative connotations even to the layman. Although, this is perhaps in part due to an unfair association with Hitler, claims that Nietzsche promotes an inherently negative philosophy are present even in academic treatments. It is among such academics that the most serious accusation against Nietzsche arises; namely that of Nietzsche being a nihilist. While accusations related to Nazism can relatively easily be refuted, other accusations are not quite as unfounded: Nietzsche encouraged strength and power; he called himself an “immoralist”; he rejected democracy and human equality; he promoted the notion of an “Übermensch”; and he did encourage nihilism. The author discusses these negative associations in terms of Nietzsche's philosophy. He exposes this common fallacy by interpreting the various elements of Nietzsche’s ethics in the context of his philosophy as a whole.

Book excerpt: This book revisits Paul Ricoeur's classification of Karl Marx, Friedrich Nietzsche, and Sigmund Freud as the “masters of suspicion”, and provides a thought-provoking critique for critical religious studies scholars, as well as anyone working in critical theory more broadly. Whereas Ricoeur saw suspicion as a mode of interpretation, Andrew Dole argues that the method common to his “masters” is better understood as a mode of explanation. Dole replaces Ricoeur's hermeneutics of suspicion with suspicious explanation, which claims the existence of hidden phenomena that are bad in some recognizable way. Each of the masters, Dole argues, offered a distinct kind of suspicious explanation. Reconstructing Marx, Nietzsche, and Freud in this way brings their work into conversation with conspiracy theories, which are themselves a type of suspicious explanation. Dole argues that conspiracy theories and other types of suspicious explanation are “cognitively ensnaring”, to borrow a term from Pascal Boyer. If they are true they are importantly true, but their truth or falsity can be very difficult to ascertain.

Using the dialectical tensions inherent to competing moral claims as his starting point, Michael Steinmann explains what he terms the “failure of morality” both in classical and contemporary positions. As moral claims lead in various ways to contradictions, the history of morality presents itself as an endless series of controversies. By using dialectical thinking, which has gone out of favour in current philosophy, Steinmann shows how we can capture the limitations of moral theories in a more holistic way. Without embracing skepticism about moral claims, a non-naturalistic and non-relativistic understanding of the good emerges as the fundamental notion of moral thought. Reframing Ethics Through Dialectics reinvigorates the classical notion of “the absolute good” as a fruitful conceptual structure through which to understand competing moral claims, without simply reproducing neo-Aristotelian literature on the good life. From the perspective of the good, the study allows us to take non-traditional theories more seriously, making space for moral philosophy to acknowledge and embrace the contradictions that all positions incur.
