Book On Sraffa s Standard Commodity

Download or read book On Sraffa s Standard Commodity written by Salvatore Baldone and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his 1960 book, Sraffa suggested using a composite commodity, which he called the 'Standard commodity', to solve Ricardo's search for an invariable measure of value, i.e., a standard capable of isolating the price movements of any other commodity induced by changes in income distribution. The absence in Sraffa's book of an explicit proof of the invariance property of this standard gave rise to many misunderstandings about its meaning and its role as an invariable measure of value. In order to clear up these questions, Bellino (On Sraffa's Standard commodity, Cambridge Journal of Economics, vol. 28, 121-32, 2004) has proposed a 'proper' definition of an 'invariable measure of value', showing that Sraffa's Standard commodity does fulfil the requirements of this definition. He claims that the fulfilment of this property (but not the constancy of its 'nominal' price) qualifies the Standard commodity as an invariable measure of value. In this paper, a proof of the invariance of the price of the Standard commodity with respect to changes in income distribution is given, and the equivalence of this property with Bellino's definition of invariance is shown.

Book Theories of Value from Adam Smith to Piero Sraffa

Download or read book Theories of Value from Adam Smith to Piero Sraffa written by Ajit Sinha and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2018-08-06 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a comprehensive account of more than 200 years of controversy on the classical theories of value and distribution. The author focuses on four, perhaps most critical classics — Adam Smith’s Wealth of Nations, David Ricardo’s Principles of Political Economy, Karl Marx’s Capital and Piero Sraffa’s Production of Commodities by Means of Commodities. The book highlights several significant differences in the widely celebrated theories of the four authors as it searches for the ‘classical standpoint’ that separates them from the ‘moderns’. It also challenges canonical interpretations to analyse their flaws and weaknesses, in addition to the already obvious strengths, and critically engages with the major alternative interpretations and criticisms of the theories. With a new Afterword that follows up on the debates and developments since the first edition, this book will appeal to scholars and academics of economic theory and philosophy, as well as to the general reader.

Book Theory of Production

Download or read book Theory of Production written by Heinz D. Kurz and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1997-02-28 with total page 596 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This compelling book contains a comprehensive analytical treatment of the theory of production in a long-period framework. Although the authors take a 'Classical' approach to their subject, the scope of investigation and methods employed should interest all economic theorists. Professors Kurz and Salvadori explore economic systems that are characterised by a particular kind of primary input in the production process, such as different kinds of labour and natural resources. These systems and the corresponding prices can be understood to reflect characteristic features of a capitalist market economy in an ideal way: they express the pure logic of the relationship between value and distribution in an economic system. Specific chapters deal with prices and income distribution, economic growth, joint production, fixed capital, scarce natural resources (both renewable and exhaustible), and heterogeneous labour. The historical origins of the concepts used are also discussed in considerable detail.

Book Sraffa s Incomplete Reductions to Labor

Download or read book Sraffa s Incomplete Reductions to Labor written by Ian P. Wright and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sraffa, in part 1 of his "Production of Commodities by Means of Commodities", describes two kinds of reductions to labor. First, he reduces Classical natural prices to an infinite series of "dated" quantities of labor multiplied by a profit factor. He concludes that prices are "in proportion to their labor cost", that is Classical labor-values, only in the special case of zero profit. I show that Sraffa's reduction is incomplete in the precise sense that it ignores some actual labor supplied during the "successive stages of the production of the commodity". The complete reduction to dated quantities reveals that natural prices are, in fact, proportional to total labor costs. Second, Sraffa constructs a "standard commodity" that functions as an "invariable standard of value" in the context of changes in income distribution. Sraffa reduces the standard commodity, which he views as "a purely auxiliary construction", to the "variable quantity of labor" it commands in the market. I show that Sraffa's reduction is incomplete because it does not reduce the "invariable standard" to a real cost of production. The complete reduction reveals that Sraffa's "variable quantity" is, in fact, the total labor cost of the standard commodity. I conclude by discussing how Sraffa's incomplete reductions derive from the Classical category-mistake of conflating technical with total labor costs.

Book Ricardo on Money

Download or read book Ricardo on Money written by Ghislain Deleplace and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-04-07 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite his achievements, David Ricardo’s views on money have often been misunderstood and underappreciated. His advanced ideas had to wait until the twentieth century to be applied, and most historians of economic thought continue to consider him as an obsolete orthodox. The last book devoted in tribute to Ricardo as a monetary economist was published more than 25 years ago. Ricardo on Money encompasses the whole of Ricardo’s writings on currency, whether in print, unpublished notes, correspondence, or reported parliamentary speeches and evidence. The aim of the book is at rehabilitating Ricardo as an unorthodox theorist on money and suggesting his relevance for modern analysis. It is divided into three parts: history, theory and policy. The first describes the factual and intellectual context of Ricardo’s monetary writings. The second part puts the concept of standard centre stage and clarifies how, according to Ricardo, the standard regulated the quantity – and hence the value – of money. The final part shows that Ricardo relied on the active management of paper money rather than on flows of bullion and commodities to produce international adjustment and guarantee the security of the monetary system. Published to coincide with the 200th anniversary of the publication of On the Principles of Political Economy, and Taxation, this book will be of great interest to all historians of economic thought and scholars of monetary economics.

Book The Theory of Value and Distribution in Economics

Download or read book The Theory of Value and Distribution in Economics written by Pierangelo Garegnani and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new volume explores two alternative economic theories - the classical theory and the marginalist or neoclassical theory- through a discussion between two eminent economists, Pierangelo Garegnani and Paul Samuelson. The key themes of the volume are the difference in approaches to the explanation of the distribution of income and relative prices, and therefore different approaches to all other economic problems, in particular capital accumulation and economic growth. The book discusses whether there is a 'classical' approach to the theory of value and distribution at the core of economic theory that is fundamentally different from the later marginalist or neoclassical theory. In the volume, the late Pierangelo Garegnani argues for the validity of Piero Sraffa's position on this issue, whilst the late noble laureate Paul Samuelson vehemently contests it. At a time of economic crisis, the future of the discipline is far from certain, and so it is extremely important to bring these debates back into the light, by reproducing them together for the first time. A comprehensive introduction by Heinz Kurz sets the debate in this context, and provides crucial background to the arguments.

Book A Reflection on Sraffa s Revolution in Economic Theory

Download or read book A Reflection on Sraffa s Revolution in Economic Theory written by Ajit Sinha and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-06-02 with total page 611 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a substantial collection of essays from a wide range of well respected scholars addressing several aspects of Piero Sraffa’s economics in light of continuing controversies over the interpretation that should be placed on his work. It moves beyond extant scholarship with an added emphasis on the philosophical dimension of Sraffa’s seminal work, Production of Commodities by Means of Commodities. Contributors probe new ways of thinking about the political economy of Sraffa and in doing so, alongside the comments to each contribution by other scholars, provide a cutting edge debate and discussion on non-mainstream economic theory. This book will be of interest to academics and advanced graduate students in economics, with additional interest from scholars in philosophy and the methodology of science.

Book Structural Economic Dynamics

Download or read book Structural Economic Dynamics written by Luigi Pasinetti and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-11-02 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a theoretical investigation of the influence of human learning on the development through time of a 'pure labour' economy. The theory proposed is a simple one, but aims to grasp the essential features of all industrial economies. Economists have long known that two basic phenomena lie at the root of long-term economic movements in industrial societies: capital accumulation and technical progress. Attention has been concentrated on the former. In this book, by contrast, technical progress is assigned the central role. Within a multi-sector framework, the author examines the structural dynamics of prices, production and employment (implied by differentiated rates of productivity growth and expansion of demand) against a background of 'natural' relations. He also considers a number of institutional problems. Institutional and social learning, know-how, and the diffusion of knowledge emerge as the decisive factors accounting for the success and failure of industrial societies.

Book An Error in the Interpretation of Sraffa s Standard Commodity

Download or read book An Error in the Interpretation of Sraffa s Standard Commodity written by Robert L. Vienneau and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Piero Sraffa's masterpiece, The Production of Commodities by Means of Commodities, is written in a remarkably terse style and presents many problems of interpretation and understanding. The role of the Standard commodity in Sraffa's work is one contentious area in interpretations. This paper shows that M. Reder made mathematical errors on this topic in an early review of Sraffa's book. Mark Blaug took up one of these errors and inserted it in successive editions of his well-known textbook on the history of economic thought and in a New Palgrave entry. Heinz D. Kurz and Neri Salvadori point out this error in an exercise in their textbook on the theory of production and in a later paper. Finally, this paper points out Blaug's recent acknowledgement of this error, leading to the likelihood of its removal from at least his textbook in future editions. Nearly half a century after the publication of Sraffa's book, the error described in this paper might be removed from the textbook containing it.
