Book Symmetrization And Applications

Download or read book Symmetrization And Applications written by S Kesavan and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2006-04-25 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of isoperimetric inequalities involves a fascinating interplay of analysis, geometry and the theory of partial differential equations. Several conjectures have been made and while many have been resolved, a large number still remain open. One of the principal tools in the study of isoperimetric problems, especially when spherical symmetry is involved, is Schwarz symmetrization, which is also known as the spherically symmetric and decreasing rearrangement of functions. The aim of this book is to give an introduction to the theory of Schwarz symmetrization and study some of its applications. The book gives an modern and up-to-date treatment of the subject and includes several new results proved recently. Effort has been made to keep the exposition as simple and self-contained as possible. A knowledge of the existence theory of weak solutions of elliptic partial differential equations in Sobolev spaces is, however, assumed. Apart from this and a general mathematical maturity at the graduate level, there are no other prerequisites.

Book Mean Curvature Flow and Isoperimetric Inequalities

Download or read book Mean Curvature Flow and Isoperimetric Inequalities written by Manuel Ritoré and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geometric flows have many applications in physics and geometry. The mean curvature flow occurs in the description of the interface evolution in certain physical models. This is related to the property that such a flow is the gradient flow of the area functional and therefore appears naturally in problems where a surface energy is minimized. The mean curvature flow also has many geometric applications, in analogy with the Ricci flow of metrics on abstract riemannian manifolds. One can use this flow as a tool to obtain classification results for surfaces satisfying certain curvature conditions, as well as to construct minimal surfaces. Geometric flows, obtained from solutions of geometric parabolic equations, can be considered as an alternative tool to prove isoperimetric inequalities. On the other hand, isoperimetric inequalities can help in treating several aspects of convergence of these flows. Isoperimetric inequalities have many applications in other fields of geometry, like hyperbolic manifolds.

Book Some Connections between Isoperimetric and Sobolev type Inequalities

Download or read book Some Connections between Isoperimetric and Sobolev type Inequalities written by Serguei Germanovich Bobkov and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1997 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For Borel probability measures on metric spaces, this text studies the interplay between isoperimetric and Sobolev-type inequalities. In particular the question of finding optimal constants via isoperimetric quantities is explored. Also given are necessary and sufficient conditions for the equivalence between the extremality of some sets in the isoperimetric problem and the validity of some analytic inequalities. The book devotes much attention to: the probability distributions on the real line; the normalized Lebesgue measure on the Euclidean sheres; and the canonical Gaussian measure on the Euclidean space.

Book On the Isoperimetric Inequality

Download or read book On the Isoperimetric Inequality written by Bilal Ahmad Basha and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Let C be a simple closed curve of length L. If C surrounds an area A then L and A are governed by the inequality-- Lr>4TJA--This inequality is called the isoperimetric inequality, and it can be shown that equality holds if and only if C is a circle. Any proof of the isoperimetric inequality, it would seem, must start from some relation connecting L directly to A, and some of the proofs given in this thesis proceed along this line. There are, however, other proofs of this inequality that proceed along different lines.--In this thesis, we present a brief history and several proofs of the isoperimetric inequality. We present a reasonably elementary proof using calculus, another proof using Fourier series, a geometric proof using symmetrization and a more recent proof connecting the inequality to approximation theory. The geometric proof goes back to Steiner and requires the idea, introduced by Steiner, of symmetrization. Because of continued interest in symmetrization, we present some of its main properties in this thesis. The approximation proof is due to Khavinson and requires the idea, introduced by Khavinson himself, of analytic content of a set .The relation of analytic content to approximation takes up most of the work in this thesis.

  • Pages : 402 pages

Download or read book Riemannian Geometry written by Isaac Chavel and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1995-01-27 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an introduction to Riemannian geometry, the geometry of curved spaces. Its main theme is the effect of the curvature of these spaces on the usual notions of geometry, angles, lengths, areas, and volumes, and those new notions and ideas motivated by curvature itself. Isoperimetric inequalities--the interplay of curvature with volume of sets and the areas of their boundaries--is reviewed along with other specialized classical topics. A number of completely new themes are created by curvature: they include local versus global geometric properties, that is, the interaction of microscopic behavior of the geometry with the macroscopic structure of the space. Also featured is an ambitious "Notes and Exercises" section for each chapter that will develop and enrich the reader's appetite and appreciation for the subject.
