Book The human dilemma of displacement

Download or read book The human dilemma of displacement written by Alfred R. Brunsdon and published by AOSIS. This book was released on 2020-12-31 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book social responsive theological research converges to provide practical theological and ecclesiological perspectives on the growing human dilemma of displacement. The book presents the research of practical theologians, a missiologist and a religious practitioner whose work pertains first and foremost to the (South) African context. The different fields of expertise of the contributors within the broader field of practical theology worked towards a unique compilation of themes, each relevant to the issue at stake. The majority of chapters are theoretically orientated, except where authors refer to empirical work conducted during previous research. The main contribution of this collaborative work is to be sought in the practical theological and ecclesiological perspectives it provides. It engages the critical questions of what kind of church we need, and what kind of care we should provide in the face of the growing predicament of human displacement. The theological and theoretical principles uncovered in the different chapters will be of use to theologians from all theological subdisciplines, as well as to religious practitioners and leaders of faith communities that are challenged with the growing realities of strangers on their doorsteps and in their pews.

Download or read book Help written by Garret Keizer and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2009-10-13 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a book the San Francisco Chronicle called "unclassifiably wise" and a "masterpiece," noted Harper's essayist Garret Keizer explores the paradox that we are human only by helping others– and all too human when we try to help. It is the primal cry, the first word in a want ad, the last word on the tool bar of a computer screen. A song by the Beatles, a prayer to the gods, the reason Uncle Sam is pointing at you. What we get by with a little of, what we could use a bit more of, what we were only trying to do when we were so grievously misunderstood. What we'll be perfectly fine without, thank you very much. It makes us human. It can make us suffer. It can make us insufferable. It can make all the difference in the world. It can fall short. "Help is like the swinging door of human experience: 'I can help!' we exclaim and go toddling into the sunshine; 'I was no help at all,' we mutter and go shuffling to our graves. I'm betting that the story can be happier than that . . . but I have a clearer idea now than I once did of what I'm betting against." In his new book, Help, Garret Keizer raises the questions we ask everyday and in every relationship that matters to us. What does it mean to help? When does our help amount to hindrance? When are we getting less help–or more–than we actually want? When are we kidding ourselves in the name of helping (or of refusing to "enable") someone else? Drawing from history, literature, firsthand interviews, and personal anecdotes, Help invites us to ponder what is at stake whenever one human being tries to assist another. From the biblical Good Samaritan to present day humanitarians, from heroic sacrifices in times of political oppression to nagging dilemmas in times of ordinary stress, Garret Keizer takes us on a journey that is at once far–ranging and never far from where we live. He reminds us that in our perpetual need for help, and in our frequent perplexities over how and when to give it, we are not alone.

Book Concrete

Book excerpt: Part man, part...rock? Over seven feet tall and weighing over a thousand pounds, he is known as Concrete but is in reality the mind of one Ronald Lithgow, trapped inside a shell of stone, a body that allows him to walk unaided on the ocean's floor or survive the crush of a thousand tons of rubble in a collapsed mineshaft...but prevents him from feeling the touch of a human hand. These stories of Concrete are as rich and satisfying as any in comics: funny, heartbreaking, and singularly human.

Book Life Is Messy

Download or read book Life Is Messy written by Matthew Kelly and published by Blue Sparrow. This book was released on 2021-08-15 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life is messy. It isn't a color-within-the-lines exercise. It's a wild and outrageous invitation full of uncertain outcomes. The mess of life is both inevitable and unexpected. It is filled with delightful mysteries and frustrating predicaments. In our disposable culture, we throw broken things away. So, what will we do with broken people, broken relationships, broken institutions, broken families, and of course, our very own broken selves? We are all broken and wounded. This book is about putting our lives back together, and allowing ourselves to be put back together, when life doesn't turn out as we expected it to. Based on his own heart-wrenching personal journals, Matthew Kelly shares how the worst three years of his life affected him, by exploring this question: Can someone who has been broken be healed and become more beautiful and more lovable than ever before? The answer will fill you with hope. There has never been a more urgent need for us to attend to what is happening within us. This is quite simply the right book at the right time.

Download or read book The Retreat of Reason written by Ingmar Persson and published by Oxford University Press on Demand. This book was released on 2005-11-03 with total page 503 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the main original aims of philosophy was to give us guidance about how to live our lives. The ancient Greeks typically assumed that a life led in accordance with reason, a rational life, would also be the happiest or most fulfilling. Ingmar Persson's book resumes this project, which has been largely neglected in contemporary philosophy. But his conclusions are very different; by exploring the irrationality of our attitudes to time, our identity, and our responsibility,Persson shows that the aim of living rationally conflicts not only with the aim of leading the most fulfilling life, but also with the moral aim of promoting the maximization and just distribution of fulfilment for all. Persson also argues that neither the aim of living rationally nor any of the fulfilmentaims can be rejected as less rational than any other. We thus face a dilemma of either having to enter a retreat of reason, insulated from everyday attitudes, or making reason retreat from its aspiration to be the sole controller of our attitudes. The Retreat of Reason explores three areas in which there is a conflict between the rational life and a life dedicated to maximization of fulfilment. Persson contends that living rationally requires us to give up, first, our temporal biases; secondly, our bias towards ourselves; and, thirdly, our responsibility to the extent that it involves the notion of desert and desert-entailing notions. But giving up these attitudes is so overwhelmingly hard that the effort to do so not only makesour own lives less fulfilling, but also obstructs our efficient pursuit of the moral aim of promoting a maximum of justly distributed fulfilment.Ingmar Persson brings back to philosophy the ambition of offering a broad vision of the human condition. The Retreat of Reason challenges and disturbs some of our most fundamental ideas about ourselves.

Book The Omnivore s Dilemma

Download or read book The Omnivore s Dilemma written by Michael Pollan and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2007-08-28 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Outstanding . . . a wide-ranging invitation to think through the moral ramifications of our eating habits." —The New Yorker One of the New York Times Book Review's Ten Best Books of the Year and Winner of the James Beard Award Author of This is Your Mind on Plants, How to Change Your Mind and the #1 New York Times Bestseller In Defense of Food and Food Rules What should we have for dinner? Ten years ago, Michael Pollan confronted us with this seemingly simple question and, with The Omnivore’s Dilemma, his brilliant and eye-opening exploration of our food choices, demonstrated that how we answer it today may determine not only our health but our survival as a species. In the years since, Pollan’s revolutionary examination has changed the way Americans think about food. Bringing wide attention to the little-known but vitally important dimensions of food and agriculture in America, Pollan launched a national conversation about what we eat and the profound consequences that even the simplest everyday food choices have on both ourselves and the natural world. Ten years later, The Omnivore’s Dilemma continues to transform the way Americans think about the politics, perils, and pleasures of eating.

Book The Dilemma of Freedom and Foreknowledge

Download or read book The Dilemma of Freedom and Foreknowledge written by Linda Trinkaus Zagzebski and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1996-04-25 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This original analysis examines the three leading traditional solutions to the dilemma of divine foreknowledge and human free will--those arising from Boethius, from Ockham, and from Molina. Though all three solutions are rejected in their best-known forms, three new solutions are proposed, and Zagzebski concludes that divine foreknowledge is compatible with human freedom. The discussion includes the relation between the foreknowledge dilemma and problems about the nature of time and the causal relation; the logic of counterfactual conditionals; and the differences between divine and human knowing states. An appendix introduces a new foreknowledge dilemma that purports to show that omniscient foreknowledge conflicts with deep intuitions about temporal asymmetry, quite apart from considerations of free will. Zagzebski shows that only a narrow range of solutions can handle this new dilemma. A compelling contribution to the field, The Dilemma of Freedom and Foreknowledge will appeal to students and scholars of theistic philosophy and the philosophy of religion.

  • Pages : 290 pages

Download or read book The Human Dilemma written by Barbara Dole Larsen and published by Dog Ear Publishing. This book was released on 2009-12 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who has never wondered why people behave the way they do? They create glorious music, art and literature. They have uncovered the secrets of the universe and disease, yet have not been able to figure out how to get along with each other without war. The Human Dilemmasets out to find out why. It describes how humans evolved, how their wonderful brains work, and what they are like when they are born. The author explores the reasons individuals grow up with different personalities, depending on the societies in which they mature, from hunter-gatherers in Africa to industrial Americans. She then turns to relationships between the sexes, the temptations of power, and why religious differences lead to violence. The Human Dilemma explains, in simple, readable language, how human nature, customs and beliefs interfere with mankind's ability to resolve the overwhelming problems facing the world today. Violent conflicts between cultures have become more volatile over the years. Many believe it is man's nature to fight, yet ancient civilizations like Crete were peaceful and everyone was treated equally, women as well as men. The same is true of two hunting gathering tribes in Africa that have followed the same way of life for thousands of years. Perhaps it is just as human to cooperate peacefully in solving problems as it is to fight over them, and just as human to see our fellows as equal instead of superior or inferior. Why then do men regard women as inferior in so many societies? And why do so many nations plunge into battle, especially since the invention of nuclear bombs makes it possible to wipe out our entire species? The newest peril is global warming, caused by the spewing of carbon into the atmosphere from burning fossil fuels, which may eventually change our climate back to the days before mankind existed. Some animals have already become extinct because they cannot adjust to warmer weather. Humans may not survive such a drastic change. Our magnificent brains are capable of inventing solutions to all the problems confronting us and entrepreneurs are eager to put these inventions into practice. Why, then, don't we do it? Is there some flaw in our nature that makes it easier to blame each other instead and find excuses for relieving our frustrations in warfare? As the author studied the sciences for answers to her questions, she became convinced that only by fully understanding our nature and the reasons why it is difficult for us to confront our problems can we hope to resolve them and continue to survive. Her conclusions are found in The Human Dilemma. "An original and thought-provoking book which will appeal to a very wide audience." -Richard Edelman, Psychoanalyst "In her wonderfully wide-ranging exploration of human nature, Barbara Larsen has distilled her research into a lucid and absolutely fascinating book." -Richard Edelman, Psychoanalyst "The writer's style is open and exploratory, warmly self-sharing, and it is an enjoyable as well as a searching and provocative learning experience." -Saul L. Brown, Emeritus Chairman, Department of Psychiatry, Cedars Sinai Medical Center, Los Angeles, CA "Larsen skillfully weaves together current theory and research from an impressive variety of sources." -Arthur A. Dole, Emeritus Professor of Education, University of Pennsylvania

Book Dilemma

Download or read book Dilemma written by Albert Cutie and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2011-01-04 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: He was a Roman Catholic priest whose love affair became headline news. Now, he shares his explosive story-in his own words... In this deeply personal and controversial memoir, Father Albert Cutié tells about the devastating struggle between upholding his sacred promises as a priest and falling in love. Already conflicted with growing ideological differences with the Church, Cutié was forced to abruptly change his life the day that he was photographed on the beach, embracing the woman he would later call his wife. Once a poster boy of the Roman Catholic Church-loved and admired by millions-Cutié found that he was not happy and able to live as a celibate priest, especially having to defend the number of positions he was no longer in agreement with. For years he kept his relationship a secret, while he soul searched and prayed for answers. The love that he deemed a blessing was bringing him closer to God, but further from the Church. In Dilemma, Cutié tells about breaking that promise, reigniting the very heated debate over mandatory celibacy for Catholic priests, beginning a new way of life and discovering a new way of serving God.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE "HUMAN DILEMMA" ...Animals by Nature, Humans-2.0 by Nurture* THIS BOOK CONTAINS: "EDUCATION BEYOND THE CLASSROOM"! The greatest achievement a human can accomplish it to find the "meaning of (human) life"! ANIMALS BY NATURE: All animals, humans included, are given the proclivity to engage in (procreative) sex and the ability to rear their offspring. This is simply nature's way of preventing extinction of the various species. But it's only the "human animal" that is given the potential to do more ...much more! Socrates proclaimed: "an UN-EXAMINED life is not worth living." I proclaim: "You'll never know you're in the dark ...until you FIND the light" -SEEK! WHAT: This book is a combination textbook and workbook. With it you will be able to "examine," in detail, every relevant aspect of "human" life. It includes the text (information and instructions), tools (analytical exercises), tips, and techniques needed to understand and then resolve the "Human Dilemma" ...Animals by Nature, Humans-2.0 by Nurture*" WHY: Because 21st century personal, societal, and planetary problems demand a significantly more powerful "You"! Humankind has reached an all-time high in human-on-human pain and suffering ...and "good" people must self-transform into "powerful" people if this out of control suffering is to be controlled. Make no mistake, these problems are intractable (difficult) but not insoluble (impossible). HOW: Resolve the "Human Dilemma." That is: strengthen yourself, then you will be in a position to strengthen those around you, and as a naturally occurring byproduct you will improve the human condition ...making this a better world! PERSPECTIVE: By natural and societal forces we have each been "PROGRAMMED" and therefore we have a WSoS (Weak Sense of "Self"). In other words, our knowledge of "self" comes from others, giving us little or no input as to who we are. Only thru Self-Transformation can we obtain an SSoS (Strong Sense of "Self"). The Self-Transformation, "Know Thyself," process requires you to "examine" human life in general and your life in particular. In short, you must find and define "You" without the input of others! This book will guide you through the process. Again, this is education beyond the classroom! HOW HUMAN PROGRAMMING WORKS: Nature gives us certain physical attributes. These attributes include race, gender, facial appearance, body shape (fat/thin/tall/short/etc.). Society-shapers use these attributes as the foundation for racism, sexism, ugly, pretty, etc. This PROGRAMMING forms a "Glass Ceiling" which keeps each of us in our "place" and, of course, obedient to authoritative rule be they right or wrong, good or bad. For proof, do an internet search on "Dr. Milgram" and you'll see that "we've all been PROGRAMMED" to be weak sustainers of the status quo, followers of leaders (good or bad)! Dr. Milgram's study has been repeated in recent years (see Eli Roth, et al) ...proof that time does not change us! While passively existing under the "Glass Ceiling," you will only know "you" relative to other humans. You will never know the True, powerful "You" ...as in "Know Thyself"! Plainly put, the "Human Dilemma" revolves around the fact that we humans have two "selves." There is a "relative-self" and there is an "absolute-self." Nature and society defines the "relative-self" and puts us in our "place" under the "Glass Ceiling." For example, whites and blacks, like males and females, are put into their societally-designated "places." How else could racism and sexism continue to thrive into the 21st century? These boundaries or boxes keep the rank-in-file divided and conquered. How else can 1% of the people own more wealth than 99% of the people? I leave off with the following: "You'll never know you're in the dark ...until you "FIND" the light"! -SEEK
