Book On Fast Microscopic Browsing of MPEG Compressed Video

Download or read book On Fast Microscopic Browsing of MPEG Compressed Video written by International Business Machines Corporation. Research Division and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: "MPEG has been established as a compression standard for efficient storage and transmission of digital video. However, users are only limited to VCR-like (and tedious) functionalities when viewing MPEG video. The usefulness of MPEG video is presently limited by the lack of tools available for fast browsing, manipulation and processing of MPEG video. In this paper, we first address the problem of rapid access to individual shots and frames in MPEG video. We built upon the compressed video processing framework proposed in [1], and propose new and fast algorithms based on an adaptive mixture of approximation techniques for extracting spatially reduced image sequence of uniform quality from MPEG video across different frame types and also under different motion activities in the scenes. The algorithms execute faster than realtime on a Pentium personal computer. We demonstrate how the reduced images facilitate fast and convenient shot and frame-level video browsing and access, shot level editing and annotation, without the need for frequent decompression of MPEG video. We further propose methods for reducing the auxiliary data size associated with the reduced images through exploitation of spatial and temporal redundancy. We also address how the reduced images lead to computationally efficient algorithms for video analysis based on intra and inter shot processing for video database and browsing applications. The algorithms, tools for browsing and techniques for video processing presented in this paper have been used by many in IBM Research on more than 30 hours of MPEG-1 video for video browsing and analysis, and found to be indispensable."

Book Real Time Image and Video Processing

Download or read book Real Time Image and Video Processing written by Nasser Kehtarnavaz and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-06-01 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents an overview of the guidelines and strategies for transitioning an image or video processing algorithm from a research environment into a real-time constrained environment. Such guidelines and strategies are scattered in the literature of various disciplines including image processing, computer engineering, and software engineering, and thus have not previously appeared in one place. By bringing these strategies into one place, the book is intended to serve the greater community of researchers, practicing engineers, industrial professionals, who are interested in taking an image or video processing algorithm from a research environment to an actual real-time implementation on a resource constrained hardware platform. These strategies consist of algorithm simplifications, hardware architectures, and software methods. Throughout the book, carefully selected representative examples from the literature are presented to illustrate the discussed concepts. After reading the book, the readers are exposed to a wide variety of techniques and tools, which they can then employ to design a real-time image or video processing system.
