Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Algebraic groups play much the same role for algebraists as Lie groups play for analysts. This book is the first comprehensive introduction to the theory of algebraic group schemes over fields that includes the structure theory of semisimple algebraic groups, and is written in the language of modern algebraic geometry. The first eight chapters study general algebraic group schemes over a field and culminate in a proof of the Barsotti–Chevalley theorem, realizing every algebraic group as an extension of an abelian variety by an affine group. After a review of the Tannakian philosophy, the author provides short accounts of Lie algebras and finite group schemes. The later chapters treat reductive algebraic groups over arbitrary fields, including the Borel–Chevalley structure theory. Solvable algebraic groups are studied in detail. Prerequisites have also been kept to a minimum so that the book is accessible to non-specialists in algebraic geometry.

Book Algebraic Groups and Lie Groups

Download or read book Algebraic Groups and Lie Groups written by Gus Lehrer and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1997-01-23 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains original research articles by many of the world's leading researchers in algebraic and Lie groups. Its inclination is algebraic and geometic, although analytical aspects are included. The central theme reflects the interests of R. W. Richardson, viz connections between representation theory and the structure and geometry of algebraic groups. All workers on algebraic and Lie groups will find that this book contains a wealth of interesting material.

Book Algebraic Groups and Their Birational Invariants

Download or read book Algebraic Groups and Their Birational Invariants written by V. E. Voskresenskii and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2011-10-06 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the late 1960s, methods of birational geometry have been used successfully in the theory of linear algebraic groups, especially in arithmetic problems. This book--which can be viewed as a significant revision of the author's book, Algebraic Tori (Nauka, Moscow, 1977)--studies birational properties of linear algebraic groups focusing on arithmetic applications. The main topics are forms and Galois cohomology, the Picard group and the Brauer group, birational geometry of algebraic tori, arithmetic of algebraic groups, Tamagawa numbers, $R$-equivalence, projective toric varieties, invariants of finite transformation groups, and index-formulas. Results and applications are recent. There is an extensive bibliography with additional comments that can serve as a guide for further reading.

Book Representations of Algebraic Groups

Download or read book Representations of Algebraic Groups written by Jens Carsten Jantzen and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2003 with total page 594 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gives an introduction to the general theory of representations of algebraic group schemes. This title deals with representation theory of reductive algebraic groups and includes topics such as the description of simple modules, vanishing theorems, Borel-Bott-Weil theorem and Weyl's character formula, and Schubert schemes and lne bundles on them.

Book Actions and Invariants of Algebraic Groups

Download or read book Actions and Invariants of Algebraic Groups written by Walter Ricardo Ferrer Santos and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-09-19 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Actions and Invariants of Algebraic Groups, Second Edition presents a self-contained introduction to geometric invariant theory starting from the basic theory of affine algebraic groups and proceeding towards more sophisticated dimensions." Building on the first edition, this book provides an introduction to the theory by equipping the reader with the tools needed to read advanced research in the field. Beginning with commutative algebra, algebraic geometry and the theory of Lie algebras, the book develops the necessary background of affine algebraic groups over an algebraically closed field, and then moves toward the algebraic and geometric aspects of modern invariant theory and quotients.

Book Algebraic Groups and Lie Groups with Few Factors

Download or read book Algebraic Groups and Lie Groups with Few Factors written by Alfonso Di Bartolo and published by Springer. This book was released on 2008-04-03 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Algebraic groups are treated in this volume from a group theoretical point of view and the obtained results are compared with the analogous issues in the theory of Lie groups. The main body of the text is devoted to a classification of algebraic groups and Lie groups having only few subgroups or few factor groups of different type. In particular, the diversity of the nature of algebraic groups over fields of positive characteristic and over fields of characteristic zero is emphasized. This is revealed by the plethora of three-dimensional unipotent algebraic groups over a perfect field of positive characteristic, as well as, by many concrete examples which cover an area systematically. In the final section, algebraic groups and Lie groups having many closed normal subgroups are determined.

Book Introduction to Affine Group Schemes

Download or read book Introduction to Affine Group Schemes written by W.C. Waterhouse and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ah Love! Could you and I with Him consl?ire To grasp this sorry Scheme of things entIre' KHAYYAM People investigating algebraic groups have studied the same objects in many different guises. My first goal thus has been to take three different viewpoints and demonstrate how they offer complementary intuitive insight into the subject. In Part I we begin with a functorial idea, discussing some familiar processes for constructing groups. These turn out to be equivalent to the ring-theoretic objects called Hopf algebras, with which we can then con struct new examples. Study of their representations shows that they are closely related to groups of matrices, and closed sets in matrix space give us a geometric picture of some of the objects involved. This interplay of methods continues as we turn to specific results. In Part II, a geometric idea (connectedness) and one from classical matrix theory (Jordan decomposition) blend with the study of separable algebras. In Part III, a notion of differential prompted by the theory of Lie groups is used to prove the absence of nilpotents in certain Hopf algebras. The ring-theoretic work on faithful flatness in Part IV turns out to give the true explanation for the behavior of quotient group functors. Finally, the material is connected with other parts of algebra in Part V, which shows how twisted forms of any algebraic structure are governed by its automorphism group scheme.
