Book Guidelines for Characterization of Gas Turbine Engine Total Pressure Planar Wave and Total Temperature Inlet Flow Distortion

Download or read book Guidelines for Characterization of Gas Turbine Engine Total Pressure Planar Wave and Total Temperature Inlet Flow Distortion written by S-16 Turbine Engine Inlet Flow Distortion Committee and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The turbine-engine-inlet flow distortion descriptors summarized in this document apply to the effects of inlet total-pressure, planar-wave, and total-temperature distortions. Guidelines on stability margin, destabilizing influences, types and purposes of inlet data, AIP definition, and data acquisition and handling are summarized from AIR5866, AIR5867, ARP1420, and AIR1419. The degree to which these recommendations are applied to a specific program should be consistent with the complexity of the inlet/engine integration. Total-pressure distortion is often the predominant destabilizing element that is encountered and is often the only type of distortion to be considered, i.e, not all types of distortion need to be considered for all vehicles. The SAE S-16 Turbine Engine Inlet Flow Distortion Committee has developed an Aerospace Recommended Practice (ARP) and Aerospace Information Reports (AIR) describing measurement stations and techniques, and descriptors for different types of inlet total-pressure, planar-wave, and total-temperature distortion. There has been broad acceptance of these descriptors by the industry. Although a treatment for swirl distortion has been proposed, no methodology for swirl distortion has gained wide acceptance. When an accepted methodology exists for swirl distortion, this document will be updated to include it. This document provides a single source that contains the recommended measurement stations and techniques, and descriptors for total-pressure, planar-wave, and total-temperature inlet distortion.

Book 10th International Conference on Turbochargers and Turbocharging

Download or read book 10th International Conference on Turbochargers and Turbocharging written by Institution of Mechanical Engineers and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-05-11 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the papers from the latest international conference, following on from the highly successful previous conferences in this series held regularly since 1978. Papers cover all current and novel aspects of turbocharging systems design for boosting solutions for engine downsizing. The focus of the papers is on the application of turbocharger and other pressure charging devices to spark ignition (SI) and compression ignition (CI) engines in the passenger car and commercial vehicles. Novel boosting solutions for diesel engines operating in the industrial and marine market sectors are also included. The current emission legislations and environmental trends for reducing CO2 and fuel consumption are the major market forces in the transport (land and marine) and industry sectors. In these market sectors the internal combustion engine is the key product where downsizing is the driver for development for both SI and CI engines in the passenger car and commercial vehicle applications. The more stringent future market forces and environmental considerations mean more stringent engine downsizing, thus, novel systems are required to provide boosting solutions including hybrid, electric-motor and exhaust waste energy recovery systems for high efficiency, response, reliability, durability and compactness etc. For large engines the big challenge is to enhance the high specific power and efficiency whilst reducing emission levels (Nox and Sox) with variable quality fuels. This will require turbocharging systems for very high boost pressure, efficiency and a high degree of system flexibility. - Presents papers from all the latest international conference - Papers cover all aspects of the turbocharging systems design for boosting solutions for engine downsizing - The focus of the papers is on the application of turbocharger and other pressure charging devices to spark ignition (SI) and compression ignition (CI) engines in the passenger car and commercial vehicles

Book Turbochargers and Turbocharging

Download or read book Turbochargers and Turbocharging written by Evangelos G. Giakoumis and published by Nova Science Publishers. This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Supercharging has long been established as the most successful means to maximise power output from a specific engine size. Through supercharging, the inlet air density is increased, usually by means of a compressor, and by doing so the amount of air trapped in the cylinders is increased accordingly. As a result, efficient burning of a proportionately higher amount of fuel is enabled. By far, the most successful version of supercharging is turbocharging. Here, the expansion in a turbine of the exhaust gases leaving the cylinders supplies the power needed to drive the compressor. At the moment, practically all diesel engines are turbocharged, with a continuously increasing penetration in the highly competitive market of SI-powered vehicles. The current book on turbochargers and turbocharging, comprising fifteen chapters, gathers important and novel research on many modern aspects of turbocharging for all kinds of gasoline and diesel-powered engine applications (automotive, truck, marine and aircraft). For example, characterisation of the value proposition of turbocharged vehicles, marine engines turbo-compounding, fundamental issues of turbocharger lag and its relation with engine-out PM emissions, variable geometric compressors, automotive two-stage turbocharging, and dynamic operation of turbochargers including VGT and surging effects are amongst the topics analysed. Review papers form a very important part of the book, namely the discussion and in-depth analysis of various automotive boosting systems, turbocharger reduced-order modeling, heat transfer and pulsating flows in turbomachinery, mathematical models for turbocharged engines, and turbomachine-based engine throttling. A considerable portion of the book (seven chapters) deals with control-oriented modeling techniques relating to the turbocharger and/or the whole engine power-plant. Such models have proven valuable during the design of both turbochargers and turbocharged engines, and are described and discussed in detail for a variety of automotive and aircraft applications. The book is written for post-graduate students, engineers and researchers in the field of internal combustion engines (diesel and SI) and turbochargers.

Book SAE 2002 04 0015 Flow Modelling of a Turbocharger Turbine Under Pulsating Flow

Download or read book SAE 2002 04 0015 Flow Modelling of a Turbocharger Turbine Under Pulsating Flow written by J.K.W. Lam and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In automotive powertrain systems, turbocharger turbines experience pulsating flow conditions due to the engine cycle. The temperature and pressure pulses originating from the engine through the exhaust manifold can exert a strong influence on the turbine flow downstream, particularly at low engine speeds and powers. The designed performance of the turbine may therefore deviate significantly from the field performance. In his paper, a computational fluid dynamic (CFD) analysis of a turbine under unsteady (pulsating) flow is presented. The full complement of nozzle vanes and rotor blades vanes was modeled to study the complexity of the flow interaction between the turbine components. The analysis was performed for a simulated 720° engine cycle, at 1.600 rpm engine speed. The transient calculation is compared to the steady-state calculation, with equivalent mass- and time-averaged inlet conditions at the manifold inlet. The errors in turbine performance parameters which are caused by ignoring the pulsation effect are presented and discussed.
