Many are living as their parents and grandparents did, in close knit communities bound by heritage, kinship, and faith. Set against the breathtaking backdrop of the Appalachian Mountains, black and white photographs provide a window onto a world that is quickly fading. Portraits of people in their homes and at work in the fields illuminate the richness and rhythms of everyday life. The images are complimented by oral histories derived from conversations between the photographer and his subjects.

This book was released on 2012-02-21 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forget the bunny trail.…In this addition to the groundbreaking series from the legendary William Joyce, Guardian E. Astor Bunnymund is on the warpath. Pitch, the Nightmare King, and his Fearlings had been soundly driven back by Nicholas St. North and company in the first Guardians’ adventure. But now Pitch has disappeared completely—and out of sight does NOT make for out of mind. It seems certain that he’s plotting a particularly nefarious revenge, and the Guardians suspect he might have gone underground. But how can they find him there? Enter E. Aster Bunnymund, the only emissary of the fabled brotherhood of the Pookas—the league of philosophical warrior rabbits of imposing intellect and size. Highly skilled in martial arts (many of which he invented himself), Bunnymund is brilliant, logical, and a tunnel-digger extraordinaire. If the Guardians need paths near the Earth’s core, he’s their Pooka. He’s also armed with magnificent weapons of an oval-sort, and might just be able to help in the quest for the second piece of the Moonclipper. This second book in The Guardians series is about much more than fixing a few rotten eggs—it brings the Guardians one step closer to defeating Pitch!

Download or read book Poverty Politics written by Sarah Robertson and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2019-08-23 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Representations of southern poor whites have long shifted between romanticization and demonization. At worst, poor southern whites are aligned with racism, bigotry, and right-wing extremism, and, at best, regarded as the passive victims of wider, socioeconomic policies. In Poverty Politics: Poor Whites in Contemporary Southern Writing, author Sarah Robertson pushes beyond these stereotypes and explores the impact of neoliberalism and welfare reform on depictions of poverty. Robertson examines representations of southern poor whites across various types of literature, including travel writing, photo-narratives, life-writing, and eco-literature, and reveals a common interest in communitarianism that crosses the boundaries of the US South and regionalism, moving past ideas about the culture of poverty to examine the economics of poverty. Included are critical examinations of the writings of southern writers such as Dorothy Allison, Rick Bragg, Barbara Kingsolver, Tim McLaurin, Toni Morrison, and Ann Pancake. Poverty Politics includes critical engagement with identity politics as well as reflections on issues including Hurricane Katrina, the 2008 financial crisis, and mountaintop removal. Robertson interrogates the presumed opposition between the Global North and the Global South and engages with microregions through case studies on Appalachian photo-narratives and eco-literature. Importantly, she focuses not merely on representations of southern poor whites, but also on writing that calls for alternative ways of reconceptualizing not just the poor, but societal measures of time, value, and worth.

Book excerpt: On a small spacecraft orbiting Earth, Caligastia faced the breathtaking view of space. "My third in command will lack experience," this new prince of Earth reported to his superior, Lucifer. "He will be easy to manipulate." At The Academy of the Universe, Mendal nervously waited for the details of his unexpected assignment as a Life Carrier to help establish life on Earth. Mendal couldn't understand why they had asked for him. He hadn't even finished his schooling, which was normally required, especially for assignment on such a hostile sphere where no intelligent life yet existed. Mendal, now third in command on Earth, circa 200,000 BC, can't let what he saw on a probability computer influence his command duties; this process of uplifting primitive beings to a higher level has been used on literally millions of planets in the Nebadon universe alone. But in no other time in history has a planet been so firmly gripped by rebellion: the rebellion of Lucifer!

At St. Basil’s, Henna is surrounded not only by incredible plants, but also, for the first time, other kids—including her new roommates: wisecracking, genderfluid P, who gleefully bends every rule they come up against, and wealthy, distant Lora, who is tired of servants doing everything for her, from folding her clothes to pushing her wheelchair. But Henna’s search for the fabled healing seed means she doesn’t have time for friends—or so she thinks. This tender tale, blossoming with moments of joy, is a story of hope, grief, and learning to flourish with a little help from those around you.
