Book Reflection on Brouwer s Fixed Point Theorem

Download or read book Reflection on Brouwer s Fixed Point Theorem written by Duli Pllana and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2018-06-19 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2018 in the subject Mathematics - Algebra, grade: 2.5, , language: English, abstract: The Brouwer’s Fixed Point Theorem is one of the most well known and important existence principles in mathematics. Since the theorem and its many equivalent formulations or extensions are powerful tools in showing the existence of solutions for many problems in pure and applied mathematics, many scholars have been studying its further extensions and applications. The Brouwer Theorem itself gives no information about the location of fixed points. However, effective ways have been developed to calculate or approximate the fixed points. Such techniques are important in various applications including calculation of economic equilibria. Because Brouwer Fixed Point Theorem has a significant role in mathematics, there are many generalizations and proofs of this theorem. In this paper, we will try to show several proves of Brouwer Fixed Point Theorem. First, let’s take a look at Brouwer Theorem from real world illustrations. There are several real world examples, and we will take in consideration few of them.

Book L E J Brouwer Topologist Intuitionist Philosopher

Download or read book L E J Brouwer Topologist Intuitionist Philosopher written by Dirk van Dalen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-04 with total page 877 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dirk van Dalen’s biography studies the fascinating life of the famous Dutch mathematician and philosopher Luitzen Egbertus Jan Brouwer. Brouwer belonged to a special class of genius; complex and often controversial and gifted with a deep intuition, he had an unparalleled access to the secrets and intricacies of mathematics. Most mathematicians remember L.E.J. Brouwer from his scientific breakthroughs in the young subject of topology and for the famous Brouwer fixed point theorem. Brouwer’s main interest, however, was in the foundation of mathematics which led him to introduce, and then consolidate, constructive methods under the name ‘intuitionism’. This made him one of the main protagonists in the ‘foundation crisis’ of mathematics. As a confirmed internationalist, he also got entangled in the interbellum struggle for the ending of the boycott of German and Austrian scientists. This time during the twentieth century was turbulent; nationalist resentment and friction between formalism and intuitionism led to the Mathematische Annalen conflict ('The war of the frogs and the mice'). It was here that Brouwer played a pivotal role. The present biography is an updated revision of the earlier two volume biography in one single book. It appeals to mathematicians and anybody interested in the history of mathematics in the first half of the twentieth century.

Book The Selected Correspondence of L E J Brouwer

Download or read book The Selected Correspondence of L E J Brouwer written by Dirk von Dalen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-07-25 with total page 531 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: L.E.J. Brouwer (1881-1966) is best known for his revolutionary ideas on topology and foundations of mathematics (intuitionism). The present collection contains a mixture of letters; university and faculty correspondence has been included, some of which shed light on the student years, and in particular on the exchange of letters with his PhD adviser, Korteweg. Acting as the natural sequel to the publication of Brouwer’s biography, this book provides instrumental reading for those wishing to gain a deeper understanding of Brouwer and his role in the twentieth century. Striking a good balance of biographical and scientific information, the latter deals with innovations in topology (Cantor-Schoenflies style and the new topology) and foundations. The topological period in his research is well represented in correspondence with Hilbert, Schoenflies, Poincaré, Blumenthal, Lebesgue, Baire, Koebe, and foundational topics are discussed in letters exchanged with Weyl, Fraenkel, Heyting, van Dantzig and others. There is also a large part of correspondence on matters related to the interbellum scientific politics. This book will appeal to both graduate students and researchers with an interest in topology, the history of mathematics, the foundations of mathematics, philosophy and general science.

Book Brouwer meets Husserl

    Book Details:
  • Author : Mark van Atten
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2006-11-08
  • ISBN : 1402050879
  • Pages : 213 pages

Download or read book Brouwer meets Husserl written by Mark van Atten and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-11-08 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can a line be analysed mathematically such a way that it does not fall apart into a set of discrete points? Are there objects of pure mathematics that can change through time? L. E. J. Brouwer argued that the two questions are related and that the answer to both is "yes", introducing the concept of choice sequences. This book subjects Brouwer's choice sequences to a phenomenological critique in the style of Husserl.

Book Essays on G del s Reception of Leibniz Husserl and Brouwer

Download or read book Essays on G del s Reception of Leibniz Husserl and Brouwer written by Mark van Atten and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-11-21 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume tackles Gödel's two-stage project of first using Husserl's transcendental phenomenology to reconstruct and develop Leibniz' monadology, and then founding classical mathematics on the metaphysics thus obtained. The author analyses the historical and systematic aspects of that project, and then evaluates it, with an emphasis on the second stage. The book is organised around Gödel's use of Leibniz, Husserl and Brouwer. Far from considering past philosophers irrelevant to actual systematic concerns, Gödel embraced the use of historical authors to frame his own philosophical perspective. The philosophies of Leibniz and Husserl define his project, while Brouwer's intuitionism is its principal foil: the close affinities between phenomenology and intuitionism set the bar for Gödel's attempt to go far beyond intuitionism. The four central essays are `Monads and sets', `On the philosophical development of Kurt Gödel', `Gödel and intuitionism', and `Construction and constitution in mathematics'. The first analyses and criticises Gödel's attempt to justify, by an argument from analogy with the monadology, the reflection principle in set theory. It also provides further support for Gödel's idea that the monadology needs to be reconstructed phenomenologically, by showing that the unsupplemented monadology is not able to found mathematics directly. The second studies Gödel's reading of Husserl, its relation to Leibniz' monadology, and its influence on his publishe d writings. The third discusses how on various occasions Brouwer's intuitionism actually inspired Gödel's work, in particular the Dialectica Interpretation. The fourth addresses the question whether classical mathematics admits of the phenomenological foundation that Gödel envisaged, and concludes that it does not. The remaining essays provide further context. The essays collected here were written and published over the last decade. Notes have been added to record further thoughts, changes of mind, connections between the essays, and updates of references.

Book Brouwer s Cambridge Lectures on Intuitionism

Download or read book Brouwer s Cambridge Lectures on Intuitionism written by Luitzen Egbertus Jan Brouwer and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1981 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Luitzen Egburtus Jan Brouwer founded a school of thought whose aim was to include mathematics within the framework of intuitionistic philosophy; mathematics was to be regarded as an essentially free development of the human mind. What emerged diverged considerably at some points from tradition, but intuitionism has survived well the struggle between contending schools in the foundations of mathematics and exact philosophy. Originally published in 1981, this monograph contains a series of lectures dealing with most of the fundamental topics such as choice sequences, the continuum, the fan theorem, order and well-order. Brouwer's own powerful style is evident throughout the work.

Book L E J Brouwer Collected Works

Download or read book L E J Brouwer Collected Works written by Hans Freudenthal and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-12 with total page 735 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: L. E. J. Brouwer Collected Works, Volume 2: Geometry, Analysis, Topology, and Mechanics focuses on the contributions and principles of Brouwer on geometry, topology, analysis, and mechanics, including non-Euclidean spaces, integrals, and surfaces. The publication first ponders on non-Euclidean spaces and integral theorems, lie groups, and plane transition theorem. Discussions focus on remarks on multiple integrals, force field of the non-Euclidean spaces with negative curvature, difference quotients and differential quotients, characterization of the Euclidean and non-Euclidean motion groups, and continuous one-one transformations of surfaces in themselves. The book also takes a look at vector fields on surfaces and new methods in topology, including continuous vector distributions on surfaces and orthogonal trajectories of the orbits of a one parameter plane projective group. The book then ponders on mechanics and topology of surfaces, as well as the motion of a particle on the bottom of a rotating vessel under the influence of gravitational force. The publication is a valuable reference for researchers interested in geometry, topology, analysis, and mechanics.

Book Brouwer Degree

    Book Details:
  • Author : George Dinca
  • Publisher : Springer Nature

Download or read book Brouwer Degree written by George Dinca and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-05-11 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph explores the concept of the Brouwer degree and its continuing impact on the development of important areas of nonlinear analysis. The authors define the degree using an analytical approach proposed by Heinz in 1959 and further developed by Mawhin in 2004, linking it to the Kronecker index and employing the language of differential forms. The chapters are organized so that they can be approached in various ways depending on the interests of the reader. Unifying this structure is the central role the Brouwer degree plays in nonlinear analysis, which is illustrated with existence, surjectivity, and fixed point theorems for nonlinear mappings. Special attention is paid to the computation of the degree, as well as to the wide array of applications, such as linking, differential and partial differential equations, difference equations, variational and hemivariational inequalities, game theory, and mechanics. Each chapter features bibliographic and historical notes, and the final chapter examines the full history. Brouwer Degree will serve as an authoritative reference on the topic and will be of interest to professional mathematicians, researchers, and graduate students.

Download or read book All Things in Common written by Ruth Compton Brouwer and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2021-06-29 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first decade of the twentieth century, a few closely related families established a utopian community in Canada’s smallest province. Known officially as B. Compton Limited but described by a journalist in 1935 as "Prince Edward Island’s unique ‘brotherly love’ community," this utopia owed its longevity to the cohesion provided by its communal organization, dense kin ties, and long-held millenarianism – and to a decidedly pragmatic approach to business. All Things in Common demonstrates how "un-utopian" such a community could be while problematizing the contention that the inevitable end of all utopian experiments is a full-blown dystopia. Beginning with a compelling backstory and locating the Compton community in the historiography of North American utopias, the author goes on to explore the community’s business endeavours, its religious, familial, and transgressive aspects, and its brief period of international fame before assessing the factors that led to its dissolution in 1947. Providing a strong narrative framework, All Things in Common draws on rich family and archival records and diverse secondary sources, concluding with a consideration of the community’s legacy for its alumni and their descendants.

Book The Logical Writings of Karl Popper

Download or read book The Logical Writings of Karl Popper written by David Binder and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-08-07 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book is the first ever collection of Karl Popper's writings on deductive logic. Karl R. Popper (1902-1994) was one of the most influential philosophers of the 20th century. His philosophy of science ("falsificationism") and his social and political philosophy ("open society") have been widely discussed way beyond academic philosophy. What is not so well known is that Popper also produced a considerable work on the foundations of deductive logic, most of it published at the end of the 1940s as articles at scattered places. This little-known work deserves to be known better, as it is highly significant for modern proof-theoretic semantics. This collection assembles Popper's published writings on deductive logic in a single volume, together with all reviews of these papers. It also contains a large amount of unpublished material from the Popper Archives, including Popper's correspondence related to deductive logic and manuscripts that were (almost) finished, but did not reach the publication stage. All of these items are critically edited with additional comments by the editors. A general introduction puts Popper's work into the context of current discussions on the foundations of logic. This book should be of interest to logicians, philosophers, and anybody concerned with Popper's work.
