Book excerpt: Excerpt from On a Fresh Revision of the English Old Testament The following essay was written at the request of a valued friend more than three years ago. Immediately after its composition was suggested, the author tried to perform his task with as much expedition and in as moderate bounds as seemed to harmonise with the general purpose in which it originated. But circum stances have interfered to retard, if not entirely to prevent the execution of the scheme of which it was to form a part. The author therefore ventures to send it forth independently, regretting its isolated publication, but hoping that it may prove itself a small contribution to the cause of free thought in relation to the best mode of bringing the contents of the Bible before English-speaking people. He has tried to. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Testament Revision: A Handbook for English Readers Should my little book fall into the hands of any Biblical scholars, I would respectfully solicit their attention to the argument in behalf of the habitual use of the Greek language by Christ, as set forth in Chapter IX. My apology for taking another opportunity of handling this subject is simply that I believe it to be one of the most interesting and im portant of Biblical questions. Indeed, should the view for which I plead as to the language generally used by Christ be at last accepted, a revolution must, to a considerable extent, take place in the science of Biblical criticism. To prevent all possible misunderstanding, it may be well to add that, though the sheets of the Revised Old Testament have, from time to time, been sent to me, I am not, now that my book has been printed, acquainted with a single change of rendering which the Revisers have adopted. This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On a Fresh Revision of the English New Testament During the last summer, immediately before the Company appointed for the Revision of the English New Testament held its first sitting, I was invited to read a paper on the subject before a Clerical meeting. Finding that I had already written more than I could venture to read even to a very patient and considerate audience, and receiving a request from my hearers at the conclusion that the paper should be printed, I determined to revise the whole and make additions to it before publication. The result is the present volume. Owing to various interruptions its appearance has been delayed much longer than I had anticipated. Book A New English Translation of the Septuagint

Download or read book A New English Translation of the Septuagint written by Albert Pietersma and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2007-11-02 with total page 1050 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Septuagint (the ancient Greek translation of Jewish sacred writings) is of great importance in the history of both Judaism and Christianity. The first translation of the books of the Hebrew Bible (plus additions) into the common language of the ancient Mediterranean world made the Jewish scriptures accessible to many outside Judaism. Not only did the Septuagint become Holy Writ to Greek speaking Jews but it was also the Bible of the early Christian communities: the scripture they cited and the textual foundation of the early Christian movement. Translated from Hebrew (and Aramaic) originals in the two centuries before Jesus, the Septuagint provides important information about the history of the text of the Bible. For centuries, scholars have looked to the Septuagint for information about the nature of the text and of how passages and specific words were understood. For students of the Bible, the New Testament in particular, the study of the Septuagint's influence is a vital part of the history of interpretation. But until now, the Septuagint has not been available to English readers in a modern and accurate translation. The New English Translation of the Septuagint fills this gap.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Suggested Emendations of Authorized English Version: Of the Old Testament The amendments here suggested are the result, not of a systematic revision of the English Version, which I have never attempted, but of comparisons made in the course of translating the Scriptures into the Armenian and Bulgarian languages. They are offered to the candid consideration of all who feel especial interest in the correction of the English Version, and specially of those providentially called to the work of translating the word of God into other tongues. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Companion To: Revised Old Testament The design of this book is expressed in the title. It is intended to furnish a convenient manual to those readers of the Revised Old Testament who wish to inform themselves of its origin and aim, and of the principles upon which it has been made. It was no part of the author's purpose to defend or advocate the work of the revisers. Even if such a thing were required, he is not the person to undertake it. But it is not required. A revision of the English Bible for popular use must stand or fall by its own merits, and no efforts, whether of friends or foes, can prevent this result. If the book is worthy - that is, if it accomplish the object for which it was undertaken, no amount of opposition can overthrow it. However learned or skilful or acute its assailants may be, they will only beat the air. The Christian public will slowly but surely find out the truth, and act accordingly. They will accept and adopt that form of the Bible which best answers the purposes for which the Bible was given. Book History of the Bible in English

Download or read book History of the Bible in English written by Frederick Fyvie Bruce and published by James Clarke & Co.. This book was released on 2002 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bible in the English language is among the great achievements of all time, not only as a masterpiece of inspired writing but as a witness to the place of the Scriptures in the life of the English-speaking peoples, and Bruce's work, recognised for 30 years as the best on its subject, documents its history and shows the impact of some of the translations on the use and development of the English language. Formerly The English Bible, this comprehensive study of the various English translationsof the Bible is again available in paperback. The author traces the story from the earliest partial translations in Saxon times, through Wycliffe, Tyndale and The King James Version, to the publication of such contemporary versions as The New English Bible, The New American Standard Version, The Living Bible, and The Good News Bible. Authoritative and highly readable, this remains one of the standard works on its subject.

Book The Apocrypha of the Old Testament

Download or read book The Apocrypha of the Old Testament written by Edwin Cone Bissell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-10 with total page 692 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Apocrypha of the Old Testament: With Historical Introductions, a Revised Translation, and Notes Critical and Explanatory They are, it is true, not equal in authority to the canonical books: they did not belong to the Hebrew canon; they were written after the extinction of prophecy; they are not quoted in the New Testament (the Book of Enoch referred to by Jude is not among the Apocrypha); the most learned among the Christian fathers, Origen, Eusebius, and Jerome, excluded them from the canon in its strict sense, although they made frequent use of them; they contain some Jewish superstitions, and furnish the Roman Catholics proof-texts for their doctrines of purgatory, prayers for the dead, and the meritoriousness of good works. Nevertheless they have very great historical importance: they fill the gap between the Old and New Testaments; they explain the rise of that condition of the Jewish people, their society and religion, in which we find it at the time of Christ and the Apostles; they contain much valuable and useful information. The books of the Maccabees make us acquainted with the heroic period of Jewish history; Ecclesiasticus is almost equal to the Proverbs for its treasures of practical wisdom; Tobit and Judith are among the earliest and most interesting specimens of religious fiction. The Apocrypha are first found in the Greek Version of the Old Testament (the Septuagint), from this they passed into the Latin Vulgate, and from this into all the older Protestant versions and editions, though sometimes in smaller type, or with the heading that, while they are useful and edifying reading, they must not be put on a par with the inspired books of the Bible.
