Book On a Foundation for Religion Classic Reprint

Download or read book On a Foundation for Religion Classic Reprint written by William Mackintire Salter and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-23 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On a Foundation for Religion Further, the order of the world seems to us not a thing conferred, but inherent and necessary. If matter were essen tially inert and forceless, and once so existed, it would be a natural supposition that the wonderful combinations of ma terial particles in the crystalline and vegetable and higher orders of being resulted from the controlling hand of a superior Intelligence. But this is a gratuitous and un founded conception. Matter is attended with forces of various kinds, and is perhaps in the last analysis itself force, that needs only certain conditions to enable it to manifest its active power. And these forces we regard as competent to the production of all the varied phenomena of the world; and as we must think of them as always existing, we have no occasion to suppose that they had an author, or were consti tuted or endowed so that they might produce their results. The smooth pebble we find on the beach cannot be other than smooth the crystal is due to the co-operation of forces that could issue in no other than just these regular forms. Book The Foundations of Religion Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Foundations of Religion Classic Reprint written by Stanley A. Cook and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-23 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Foundations of Religion We cannot properly understand things (men, events, beliefs, practices) unless we view them in their context, in the whole of which they are part, in the light of the preceding and following stages. The ape and the man are remarkably alike - or unlike - it depends upon the particular group of details (resemblances or differences) and the only critical estimate will be based upon both groups of evidence, and will refer the ape and the man to their environments and to their place in evolution. So, too, a religion (e.g. Christianity) may have remark able resemblances with other religions whether (1) now current, or (2) historically prior to it but it would be unwise to base an estimate upon those features alone or upon the differences alone. And if we proceed on these principles we must apply the same method to ourselves what we condemn in others may be virtually identical with something in ourselves, and what we think meritorious in our friends may be found in our foes. The fundamental resemblances will be obscured because of the fundamental differences, or vice versa. And if we pursue this further and compare men who are warmly enthusiastic and keenly zealous, we should find most interesting points of resemblance, so that the fiery religionist and the violent rationalist would have certain fundamental psychical similarities although their bodies of beliefs and practices might differ fundamentally. 0f. Book Foundations of Religion in the Mind and Heart of Man Classic Reprint

Download or read book Foundations of Religion in the Mind and Heart of Man Classic Reprint written by John Barnard Byles and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-17 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Foundations of Religion in the Mind and Heart of Man Theological controversy, in the ordinary sense of the word, has in these pages been as much as possible avoided. A layman is neither qualified, nor disposed to thread the interminable maze. But, on the other hand, he is more at liberty than a clergyman of any Church or Sect can be, or ought to be, to say all, and exactly what he thinks. Some readers may complain, that positive conclusions have not been pushed further. But the object has been to labour on common ground, especially for the benefit of the young and uninstructed (for whom alone the author presumes to write), by showing in a popular manner, on how broad, solid, and immovable a foundation religious Faith, Hope, and Worship repose to cheer and fortify sincere and anxious hearts, whatever form of the Christian religion they may have embraced. It is plain, that this end must have been entirely frustrated, had the narrow tenets or interests of any particular Church, sect, or party, been directly or indirectly advocated or attacked. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Foundation Stones: Lectures to the Young The lectures contained in this volume were pre pared for young people. The attempt was not to walk about Zion and go round about her and tell the towers thereof, but simply to call attention to a few of the foundation stones on which we build, and point out their strength and solidity. The author wished to clear away doubts, remove stumbling blocks, and arm the young against floating infidelity, as well as to fortify the faith of those who are still babes in Christ. N 0 one can feel more keenly than he how poorly the work has been done, and yet he has the satisfaction of knowing that not a little good was accomplished by their delivery, not only among the class to whom they were especially addressed, but also among older persons. The favor with which they were received and the solicitations of many who heard them to have them put in perma nent form and sent out upon a wider mission, in duced the author to have them published. Theirpreparation necessitated a somewhat extended course of reading, and for all the help received, grateful recognition is hereby made. If the lee tures shall aid any who are seeking light, or prove a means of re-enforcing the faith of any who have already made the great decision, the author will have his reward. To this end he sends them forth, praying that they may be accompanied by the bless ing of God. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Foundation and the Superstructure, or the Faith of Christ and the Works of Man Tions, that is to say, both of the Bible and Nature; the latter including, of course, the nature implanted by god within us, and in His own likeness. For, except as revealed, man has no knowledge whatever of the Supreme Being, and of His relations to His creatures; and by the test alone of His revelations to men must all tenets in regard to heavenly truth stand or fall.1 If then the views which I am upholding can be shown to contravene at all the revelations of god Himself, no one, I trust, will be more ready than I to be so taught. But if only they shall be found to oppose the views of men, that is the very reason why I have been at such pains to give them to the world. For I, and I pray all my readers also, would humbly hearken to the inspired apostle St. Peter when he thus commands: As newborn babes (or without prejudice) desire the reasonable, unadulterated milk (of the word), that ye may grow thereby unto salvation. 2 Or when he consistently tells us, that the sure word of prophecy is the proper lamp for our darkness all through the long night even until the dawn of day; and first, because every prophecy is of public and. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Secret of Progress Buckle1 regarded it as clear that militarism and high intellectual development were not compatible: till recently, many people were prepared to believe that warfare was alien to the interest of civilised peoples and could only occur among half civilised or backward races. But this war has shown that these hopes were vain, and that the last result of civilisation was not to render war impossible, but to give the means of carrying it out on a vastly extended scale. The increase of knowledge and of power over nature, and the sense of the benefits of intercourse and inter-communication have not sufficed to give us any immunity from war. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Foundations of Faith: Being a Consideration of the Grounds of Religious Belief, and Especially of the Evidences of Divine Revelation in the Religion of the Bible One who ascends a mountain sees the landscape below changing on his view from every new point of observation. The general features of forest and field, river and plain, are much the same, but the outlines of the picture are changed. The horizon falls further away; new mountains show their misty tops, and new realms come faintly into View. Meantime objects near at hand appear to change in, relative importance; some that were conspicuous sink out of sight, and others, which they for a time concealed, stand out in bold pro file. Increasing knowledge furnishes to each succeeding generation a new view point from which to contem plate religion, natural or revealed. In this change of view we still recognize the old staple supports of faith - arguments which will forever stand firm from age to age; but new truths also come into view, and the old arguments give new suggestions. They change in their relative value when viewed through a changed perspective. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
