Therefore, all primates must display varying degrees of behavioural plasticity and adaptability to ecological pressures and modify their diets in response to low food availability. Currently, primates worldwide are threatened by increasing deforestation and the removal of crucial food sources via anthropomorphic activity. Omnivorous-frugivorous primates in particular exhibit extreme degrees of behavioural and dietary plasticity in the wake of resource scarcity but generally do not include considerable portions of meat in their diets. Therefore, an increase in the amount of meat eaten (however small) could be an indicator of dietary stress due to habitat degradation. Considering the increasing fragmentation of primate habitats I investigated the relationship between primate meat consumption and food loss. The diets of a number of omni-frugivore primate species inhabiting different geographic regions, habitat types, and continents, were compared to determine variability in the percentage of meat consumption between each group and whether primate meat intake rose in tandem with deforestation over time. Omni-frugivores in drier habitats or regions of marked seasonality consumed more meat than those found in wetter regions. There was no relationship between the protein content of the plants ingested and meat intake. Furthermore, the percentage of meat in the diets of omni-frugivores tended to increase with the rate of habitat fragmentation, with the average percentage of meat consumption rising by 1.1% between 1970-2015. The relationship between increasing meat consumption and deforestation may significantly aide the conservation of forests, crucial plant food items and sustainability of primate population persistence and health.

Book excerpt: Here we report the establishment of a family relation system between the species of African bipedal primates observed in deposits from 6.2 to 0.9 million years ago (mya).For this purpose, the author presents a single method of assigning diagnostic “weight” when conducting character assessment of fossilized remains and has also formulated several equations and ratios that make use of morphometric measurements and can be used to predict the crucial parameters of paleontological individuals, such as body weight, endocranial volume, and cerebral index, and identify their diet.Having simultaneously considered all the morphometric descriptions of the bone remains of bipedal primates and, by a single method of character evaluation, having established the degree of their affinity, the author reconstructed the phyletic lines, uniting almost all diagnostically significant samples and systematized paleoanthropological material of the 6.2–0.9 mya period.The evaluation of the phyletic-associated fossils, in compliance with the Biological Species Concept (E. Mayr), revealed the existence of only two species of bipedal primates in the African continent at the beginning of the period under consideration. Later, a new, third, species emerged, the formation of which correlated with the exponential increase in the cerebral index and the advent of the first stone tools.

While some models are based on the proposition that a key behavioral feature such as hunting, eating of seeds or monogamous mating led to the evolutionary separation of apes and humans, other models suggest that one primate species, such as the baboon or chimpanzee, best exemplifies the behavior of our early ancestors. Several contributors to the book take the position that no single primate is a good model and contend instead that a model must be eclectic. One of the more innovative essays suggests that ancestral behavioral states can, in fact, be derived by comparing the behavior of all living hominid (ape and human) species. Additionally, several other contributors analyze and discuss the concept of model-making, noting deficiencies in earlier models while offering suggestions for future development. Although it is true that a powerful conceptual model for reconstructing hominid behavior does not yet exist, The Evolution of Human Behavior: Primate Models suggests ways one may be constructed based on behavioral ecology and evolutionary theory.
