Download or read book The F Word written by Jesse Sheidlower and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024-11-04 with total page 505 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A masterfully updated edition of The F-Word which renders a comprehensive portrait of English's most notorious and colorful word. No word has generated more uses, more creative euphemisms, and more strong opinions than fuck. Jesse Sheidlower's historical dictionary, now in print for over 25 years, charts the uses of fuck and its many permutations, from absofuckinglutely to zipless fuck. It illustrates every sense of every entry with quotations, from the earliest that can be found to a recent example, showing exactly how the word has been used throughout history. This new edition is not just a minor update but a comprehensive revision of Sheidlower's groundbreaking text for the internet age. Major new discoveries push back the known history of fuck by almost two hundred years. Sheidlower also considers rapidly changing attitudes towards the use of fuck in public discourse. The volume includes over 1,000 new quotations; over 100 antedatings (earlier examples of existing entries, improving our understanding of the word's development); and many dozens of new entries, including high-profile recent uses such as AF 'as fuck', fuckboi, and the group of expressions of the sort to give no fucks or zero fucks given.
Download or read book iBroadway written by Jessica Hillman-McCord and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-11-21 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book argues that the digital revolution has fundamentally altered the way musicals are produced, followed, admired, marketed, reviewed, researched, taught, and even cast. In the first hundred years of its existence, commercial musical theatre functioned on one basic model. However, with the advent of digital and network technologies, every musical theatre artist and professional has had to adjust to swift and unanticipated change. Due to the historically commercial nature of the musical theatre form, it offers a more potent test case to reveal the implications of this digital shift than other theatrical art forms. Rather than merely reflecting technological change, musical theatre scholarship and practice is at the forefront of the conversation about art in the digital age. This book is essential reading for musical theatre fans and scholars alike.

Download or read book Millennial Fandom written by Louisa Ellen Stein and published by University of Iowa Press. This book was released on 2015-08-15 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No longer a niche or cult identity, fandom now colors our notions of an expansive generational construct—the millennial generation. Like fans, millennials are frequently cast as active participants in media culture, spectators who expect opportunities to intervene, control, and create. At the same time, long-standing fears about fans’ cultural unruliness manifest in rampant stories of millennials’ technological over-dependence and lack of moral boundaries. These conflicting narratives of entrepreneurial creativity and digital immorality operate to quell the growing threat represented by millennials’ media agency. With fan activities becoming ever more visible on social media platforms including YouTube, Facebook, LiveJournal, Twitter, Polyvore, and Tumblr, the fan has become the avatar of our digital hopes and fears. In an ambitious study encompassing a wide range of media texts, including popular television series like Kyle XY, Glee, Gossip Girl, Veronica Mars, and Pretty Little Liars and online works like The Lizzie Bennet Diaries, as well as fan texts from blog posts and tweets to remix videos, YouTube posts, and image-sharing streams, author Louisa Ellen Stein traces the circulation of the contradictory tropes of millennial hope and millennial noir. Looking at what millennials do with digital technology demonstrates the molding impact of commercial representations, and at the same time reveals how millennials are undermining, negotiating, and changing those narratives. This generation—and the fans it represents—is actively transforming the media landscape into a dynamic, culturally transgressive space of collective authorship. Offering a rich and complex vision of the relationship between fandom and millennial culture, Millennial Fandom will interest fans, millennials, students, and scholars of contemporary media culture alike.

Download or read book Hell Hope Heroes written by Antoine Balzac and published by Strategic Book Publishing & Rights Agency. This book was released on 2016-03-21 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Australia in 2010, “drug barons” of considerable influence in the community rule the roost, prompting the government to commission an elite force known as the Strategic Intelligence Service to combat the country’s current state of affairs. The S.I.S., commanded by Major Hutchinson, was allocated the decommissioned Silverwater Jail as his H.Q., and emergency powers to cut through the red tape. The group’s goal is to eradicate the drug barons by covertly abducting them and sending them where they could do no harm, using their confiscated bank accounts to finance rehabilitation centres for addicts, and dispatching their teenage drug dealer gangs to an education programme in the Simpson Desert. Camps to house and educate siblings are commissioned to hold the children until their parents are ready to reassume responsibility. Everything was working as planned, until a group of siblings are kidnapped en route to a reunion with their parents at Florinda Ridge. The ransom demands the drug barons’ release and the return of their funds within six days, or the captives will be pulverized. When Major Hutchinson discovers there’s a mole in his ranks, the fate of the hostages becomes critical, and the rule book goes out the window. The major has to solve these problems by using the very people he was being paid to protect.

Now back on tour after a year in exile, Adrian’s still struggling and under pressure to deliver his next hit. The last thing he needs is to find a teen runaway hiding in his tour bus. When calamity strikes, a perfect storm of fates unleashes and caught in the crossfire are Adrian’s band mates, a fame-shy beauty he falls hard for, and a scheming journalist with a vendetta.
