Book Accelerated Testing for Studying Pavement Design and Performance FY 2003

Download or read book Accelerated Testing for Studying Pavement Design and Performance FY 2003 written by and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Midwest States Accelerated Pavement Testing Pooled Fund Program, financed by the highway departments of Missouri, Iowa, Kansas and Nebraska, has supported an accelerated pavement testing (APT) project to compare the performance of stabilized clayey embankment soil when Portland cement, fly ash, lime and a commercial product were used as stabilizing agents. The project aimed to improve the practices related to the design of flexible pavements when the top of the subgrade is improved by chemical stabilization. The experiments were conducted at the Civil Infrastructure Systems Laboratory (CISL) of Kansas State University. The test program consisted of constructing four flexible pavement structures and subjecting them to full-scale accelerated loading test. The study indicated that cement and lime are the most effective stabilizers for the studied soil. These stabilizers resulted in lower vertical compressive stresses at the top of the subgrade and lower rut depth at the pavement surface than the fly ash-treated soil. After more than two million axle load repetitions, the pavement with cement stabilized embankment soil exhibited much less surface cracking than the pavement with fly-ash stabilized embankment. The commercial product proved not to be effective in stabilizing the non-sulfate clayey soil used in this experiment, when the embankment is constructed at the same moisture content and compaction level as for the other three chemicals. The unconfined compression strength measured on laboratory prepared samples of soil stabilized with the commercial chemical compound was very similar to that of the untreated soil.

Book Experimental Unsaturated Soil Mechanics

Download or read book Experimental Unsaturated Soil Mechanics written by Tom Schanz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-06-02 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These proceedings are a continuation of the series of International Conferences in Germany entitled "Mechanics of Unsaturated Soils." The objective is to discuss and understand unsaturated soil behaviour, so that engineered activities are improved in terms of judgement and quality. In addition to knowledge of classical concepts, it is a challenge to adapt convincing new concepts and present them in such a way that they can be used in engineering practices.

Book Developments in Marine Corrosion

Download or read book Developments in Marine Corrosion written by S A Campbell and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1998-10-01 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The diversity of subjects involved in marine corrosion and fouling processes are evident in the approaches and techniques described in this book. An improvized understanding of biologically influenced corrosion and fouling processes is essential to the development of better corrosion protection systems, and this book shows new perspectives in our appreciation of these subjects. Equally, powerful microscope imaging, surface spectroscopy and electrochemical techniques have become available and are providing new information on metal surfaces experiencing fouling or microbial corrosion. Examples include confocal laser microscopy, scanning probe microscopy, Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electrochemical microscopy and scanning (or vibrating) reference electrode techniques. Advances in knowledge of biocorrosion processes have enabled improvements in corrosion monitoring and protection strategies. Examples include metal or polymer coatings and the use of corrosion inhibitors and biocides. This book aims to provide a contribution to existing literature on biocorrosion in the marine environment.

Book The Formation and Early Evolution of Stars

Download or read book The Formation and Early Evolution of Stars written by Norbert S. Schulz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-05-24 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Starburst regions in nearby and distant galaxies have a profound impact on our understanding of the early universe. This new, substantially updated and extended edition of Norbert Schulz’s unique book "From Dust to Stars" describes complex physical processes involved in the creation and early evolution of stars. It illustrates how these processes reveal themselves from radio wavelengths to high energy X-rays and gamma–rays, with special reference towards high energy signatures. Several sections devoted to key analysis techniques demonstrate how modern research in this field is pursued and new chapters are introduced on massive star formation, proto-planetary disks and observations of young exoplanets. Recent advances and contemporary research on the theory of star formation are explained, as are new observations, specifically from the three great observatories of the Spitzer Space Telescope, the Hubble Space Telescope and the Chandra X-Ray Observatory which all now operate at the same time and make high resolution space based observing in its prime. As indicated by the new title two new chapters have been included on proto-planetary disks and young exoplanets. Many more colour images illustrate attractive old and new topics that have evolved in recent years. The author gives updates in theory, fragmentation, dust, and circumstellar disks and emphasizes and strengthens the targeting of graduate students and young researchers, focusing more on computational approaches in this edition.

Book Handbook of Tropical Residual Soils Engineering

Download or read book Handbook of Tropical Residual Soils Engineering written by Bujang B.K. Huat and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2012-05-24 with total page 558 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Residual soils are found in many parts of the world. Like other soils, they are used extensively in construction, either to build upon, or as construction material. They are formed when the rate of rock weathering is more rapid than transportation of the weathered particles by e.g., water, gravity and wind, which results in a large share of the soi
