Featuring seven chapters covering quarter-century spans of the city's history, #OmahaBlackHistory dives deep into notable people from Omaha's African American community, including politicians, ministers, businesspeople, community leaders, and others. Many of these stories have been lost to time, unaccounted for in other history books and largely neglected by Omaha historians. Various events are identified and detailed, including fairs, festivals, and celebrations; lynchings, murders, and riots; and weddings, birthdays, and funerals. Forgotten yet important places are uncovered, and lost addresses are revealed. Perhaps most vital is the way the book illustrates the connectivity between all of these elements and several others, and how the rest of the city has reacted to white supremacy, racism, and other issues central to Black history in Omaha. This book is for people who are yearning for the real history of Omaha, Nebraska. It is not glossy, it does not cover general Omaha history, and it does not contextualize a lot of what happened in the nearly 200 years included. However, it offers a uniquely substantial viewpoint that isn't covered otherwise. The final section of the book is a massive timeline of birthdates for the many of the most important people in North Omaha history, including athletes, entertainers, politicians, leaders and others. Book excerpt: Mildred Dee Brown (1905–89) was the cofounder of Nebraska’s Omaha Star, the longest running black newspaper founded by an African American woman in the United States. Known for her trademark white carnation corsage, Brown was the matriarch of Omaha’s Near North Side—a historically black part of town—and an iconic city leader. Her remarkable life, a product of the Reconstruction era and Jim Crow, reflects a larger American history that includes the Great Migration, the Red Scare of the post–World War era, civil rights and black power movements, desegregation, and urban renewal. Within the context of African American and women’s history studies, Amy Helene Forss’s Black Print with a White Carnation examines the impact of the black press through the narrative of Brown’s life and work. Forss draws on more than 150 oral histories, numerous black newspapers, and government documents to illuminate African American history during the political and social upheaval of the twentieth century. During Brown’s fifty-one-year tenure, the Omaha Star became a channel of communication between black and white residents of the city, as well as an arena for positive weekly news in the black community. Brown and her newspaper led successful challenges to racial discrimination, unfair employment practices, restrictive housing covenants, and a segregated public school system, placing the woman with the white carnation at the center of America’s changing racial landscape.

The contributors were to collect information, write essays, conduct interviews, and edit material with the goal of producing guidebooks in each of the then forty-eight states and U.S. territories. Project administrators hoped that these guides, known as the American Guide Series, would promote a national appreciation for America's history, culture, and diversity and preserve democracy at a time when militarism was on the rise and parts of the world were dominated by fascism. Marilyn Irvin Holt focuses on the Nebraska project, which was one of the most prolific branches of the national program. Best remembered for its state guide and series of folklore and pioneer pamphlets, the project also produced town guides, published a volume on African Americans in Nebraska, and created an ethnic study of Italians in Omaha. In Nebraska during the New Deal Holt examines Nebraska’s contribution to the project, both in terms of its place within the national FWP as well as its operation in comparison to other state projects.

By then four generations of Dr. Shapiro's family were among these "stateless" people. Chernobyl changed Dr. Shapiro's life and career forever. Arriving in the U.S., like all immigrants she had to learn a new language, encountered red tape validating her diplomas, and find housing for her family When U.S. authorities failed to fully validate her medical diplomas, she re-enrolled in medical school at Georgetown University and restarted her career and new life in America. Spurred on by her Chernobyl experiences, she rose to become one of the world's leading expert's in medical countermeasures against radiation exposure. For thirty years she worked for the FDA on disaster readiness and preparation-and has a much to say about America's readiness or lack of readiness for the current pandemic affecting the United States and the world.
