Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bacterial plasmids originating in a wide range of genera are being studied from a variety of perspectives in hundreds of laboratories around the globe. These elements are well known for carrying "special" genes that confer important survival properties, frequently neces sary under atypical conditions. Classic examples of plasmid-borne genes are those provid ing bacterial resistance to toxic substances such as antibiotics, metal ions, and bacte riophage. Often included are those determining bacteriocins, which may give the bacterium an advantage in a highly competitive environment. Genes offering metabolic alternatives to the cell under nutritionally stressed conditions are also commonly found on plasmids, as are determinants important to colonization and pathogenesis. It is likely that in many, if not most, cases plasmids and their passenger determinants represent DNA acquired recently by their bacterial hosts, and it is the characteristic mobility of these elements that enables their efficient establishment in new bacterial cells by the process known as conjugation. Whereas many plasmids are fully capable of promoting their own conjugal transfer, others move only with help from coresident elements. The ability of a plasmid to establish itself in a variety of different species is com mon, and recent studies have shown that transfer can in some cases occur from bacterial cells to eukaryotes such as yeast.

Book Cancer a Second Opinion

Download or read book Cancer a Second Opinion written by Josef Issels and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Long before the terms 'alternative' and 'complementary' were part of American medical culture, Dr. Issels created the world's first fully 'integrative' cancer therapy. Issels hypothesized that primary and recurrent malignancies result in a tendency of the body to produce tumors - a tendency built on underlying problems that are potentially curable through comprehensive immunotherapy. Guided only by his desire to cure the patient, Issels made use of every tool in his toolbox to reduce tumors, to strengthen the immune response, and to heal tissues." -- p. [4] of cover.

Book Pen Portraits

Download or read book Pen Portraits written by Patricia Clarke and published by Allen & Unwin. This book was released on 1988-11-01 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pen Portraits tells the story of the achievements of Australia's earliest women writers. Despite being confined to a life within the home in a frontier society, some talented (and very determined) women in colonial Australia carved out careers as writers. Among them were writers of popular serials, whose latest instalments were as eagerly awaited as the latest episode is in today's TV 'soapies'; writers of newspaper features and columns; even a foreign correspondent. But it was not until the 1880s that a very few won full-time positions as journalists. For some this was the exciting storming of an all-male preserve, for most it meant the society pages - the 'deadly dreary ruck of long dress reports'. Nevertheless, there was a handful of women who ran the new women's magazines, and in these magazines women writers carried on the fight for the vote, for the right to an education, for freedom to work and freedom from unhappy marriages. Pen Portraits presents these women's worlds, their brave choices and their remarkable lives. Lavishly illustrated, Pen Portraits pays belated tribute to their contribution to colonial life and letters. Patricia Clarke, a journalist for many years and the author of The Governesses and A Colonial Woman, has uncovered the stories of almost a hundred women, from the first woman to publish in Australia to those whose work gained international acclaim; from the writers of moral tales to those whose 'daring' copy brought a raffish touch to the newspapers of the day; from crusading reformers to society ladies who wrote the social notes.

Book The Best of Colonial Brisbane

Download or read book The Best of Colonial Brisbane written by Rod Fisher and published by Boolarong Press. This book was released on 2012-01-09 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Packed inside this unique collection on colonial Brisbane are no less than 22 essays by historian Rod Fisher. Most were published as scattered articles in various formats over 25 years, 3 have never seen the light of day and all are brought up to date. While stepping through the years from 1842-1901 and sometimes further as a continuum, they are grouped under 5 main themes. ‘Occupation’ deals with early settlement, employment and pursuits until the 1860s. That involves the lie of the land including the town, its old windmill, industry, photography, cultural associations and personnel. The next theme of ‘Alienation’ traverses the same years in exposing, as never before, the aboriginal experience and ethnic mix, while taking the formation of the New Church until the early 1880s as an instance of sectarianism. The ‘Separation’ section concerns several historical oversights about 1859: the time-lag in acknowledging Brisbane as the colonial capital; rediscovery of the original proclamation of Queensland; recognition of the role of its prime public servant; and ongoing history of the first colonial flag; as well as the visual means used by a sojourning artist to promote Brisbane’s new-found status in 1864-66. Then ‘Personation’ portrays the rise and fall of 4 ‘representative men’ from early colonial years to the end of the era: an Anglican brewer turned public servant and teacher; English Swedenborgian artist, musician and naturalist; Scottish Presbyterian novelist, merchant and planter; and Irish Catholic building contractor – not forgetting their supportive and long-suffering wives. Going back from the late 1880s to the 1840s and then forward into the next century, the final theme of ‘Location’ examines the iniquities of urban Frogs Hollow, origins of rustic Bulimba, trends in old South Brisbane, controversies of North Brisbane Cemetery later Lang Park, perceptions of Brisbane River and sad saga of Moreton Bay.
