He was central to the ‘third generation’ of ermetismo – the movement that voiced the mysterious, the hidden and the abstract. Bigongiari was a poet of origins, exploring the grounding of cultures in landscape and myth, the depths and limitations of home, and the symbols and narratives that sustain an individual’s bond to places. His poetic technique was based on the elaboration of motifs, tracing evolving ideas in a web of verbal themes and variations. Identity representation is the main focus of this volume, which analyses instances of multimedia and multimodal communication to the public at large for commercial, informative, political or cultural purposes. In particular, it examines the impact of the increasingly sophisticated forms of expression made available by the evolution of communication technologies, especially in computer-mediated or web-based settings, but also in more traditional media (press, cinema, TV). The basic assumption shared by all contributors is that communication is the locus where identities, either collective, social or individual, are deliberately constructed and negotiated. In their variety of topics and approaches, the studies collected in this volume testify to the criticality of representing personal, professional and organizational identities through the new media, as their ability to reach a virtually unlimited audience amplifies the potential political, cultural and economic impact of discursive identity constructions. They also confirm that new highly sophisticated media can forge identities well beyond the simply iconic or textual representation, generating deeply interconnected webs of meaning capable of occupying an expanding - and adaptable - discursive space.

Al contrario, può raggiungere se non quiete almeno dignità e rispetto per se stesso soltanto imparando a navigare tra le sue contraddizioni, nel suo caos. Un altro luogo comune da sfatare? La teoria della santificante conciliazione degli opposti. Conduce a scelte devastanti per la società e assassine per l’individuo, è la culla di ogni bastardo compromesso politico, è il frutto avvelenato del pensiero di Hegel e dell’eterno oscillare tra assolutismo assassino e lassismo scatenato proprio della sua patria tedesca. Ultima chicca: nel rapporto con i sentimenti è la donna a essere handicappata, schiava com’è delle emozioni che sono causa prima dei sentimenti stessi ma in grado, se non filtrate alchenicamente, di soffocarli sul nascere, di portare ogni individuo – donna o uomo che sia – alle scelte più sbagliate della propria vita. Erich Weisz esamina tutti questi “miti” dell’età moderna, “miti” nel senso etimologico di indiscutibili verità. Sono verità assolute come in passato lo sono state quelle che affermavano essere i negri non umani, la terra piatta, le donne inferiori quando non streghe, unico dio il dio dominante della cultura militarmente superiore. Ipotesi da cui Erich Weisz deduce essere ogni guerra una guerra tra dèi combattuta con la carne e il sangue degli umani. Tra tanti luoghi comuni incrollabili, pietrificati opinioni Erich Weisz naviga per fare aprire gli occhi del lettore sul fatto che tante devastanti menzogne sono volte a riportare al potere assoluto nella cultura occidentale una divinità arcaica ostile al maschio della specie e al progredire della specie umana. Per lui tale divinità nemica è la Grande Madre. Weisz espone il proprio eterodosso pensiero attraverso un saggio romanzato in cui compaiono dèi, oltre a uomini e donne. Gli dèi intervengono nelle loro umane vicende come facevano in remoti poemi epici o come sono sentiti vivi e presenti e vengono invocati ogni giorno in famiglie religiose d’ogni credo. Gli dèi di questa saga non sono come i pupazzi di un cartone animato o le figure costruite al computer in storie contemporanee di grande successo, in film e romanzi. Non sono mere immagini commoventi. Non offrono effetti visivi speciali in 3D, roba da videogiochi. Sono dèi veri ed eterni. Sono dèi difficili da “sentire” ma turbano quando toccano l’animo. Il loro costellarsi grazie alle righe di queste libro possono disturbare molti, come disturbano le verità più profonde, le verità che si agitano nel profondo dell’inconscio. Se inascoltate, possono persino sconvolgere, irritare, fare arrabbiare. Si sconsiglia pertanto la lettura de La Divinità Nemica a conformisti e iracondi, qualunque sia la loro età e il modo di esprimere la propria sessualità.

How a shared memory of Fascism and its cultural heritage took shape is still today the most disputed question of modern Italy, crossing the boundaries between academic and public discourse. Against Redemption concentrates on the historical period in which disagreement was at its highest: the transition between the downfall of Mussolini in July 1943 and the victory of the Christian Democrats over the Left in the 1948 general elections. By dispelling the silence around the range of opinion in the years before the ideological struggle fossilized into Cold War oppositions, this book points to early postwar literary practices as the main vehicle for intellectual dissent, shedding new light on the role of cultural policies in institutionalizing collective memory. During Italy’s transition to democracy competing narratives over the recent traumatic past emerged and crystallized, depicting the country’s break with Mussolini’s regime as a political and personal redemption from its politics of exclusion and unrestrained use of violence. Conversely, outstanding authors such as Elsa Morante, Carlo Levi, Alberto Moravia and Curzio Malaparte, in close dialogue with remarkable but now neglected figures, stressed the cultural continuity between the new democracy and Fascism, igniting heated debates from opposite political standpoints. Their works addressed questions such as the working through of national defeat, Italian responsibility in WWII and the Holocaust, revealing how the social, racial, and gender biases that characterized Fascism survived after its demise and haunted the new born democracy.

These women were the most famous musicians of Milan, and the music composed for them opens up a hitherto unstudied musical repertory, which allows insight into the symbolic world of the city. Even more importantly, the music actually composed by four such nuns, Claudia Scossa, Claudia Rusca, Chiara Margarita Cozzollani, and Rosa Giacinta Badalla - reveals the musical expression of women's devotional life. The two centuries' worth of battles over nuns' singing of polyphony, studies here for the first time on the basis of massive archival documentation, also suggest that the implementation of reform in the major centre of post-Tridentine Catholic renewal was far more varied; incomplete, subject to local political pressure and individual interpretation, and short-lived than any religious historian has ever suggested. Other factors that marked nuns' musical lives and creative output - liturgical traditions of the religious orders, the problems of performance practice attendant upon all-female singing ensembles - are here addressed for the first time in the musicological literature.
